There is a distinct possiblity that Nadal and Federer will play in the SF's of the TMC this year. It would end a stretch of 5 consecutive meetings in finals this year between the two.

Here is a list of some great rivalries where the combatants met in consecutive finals (within their rivalries) over relatively short periods of time (that brief time where two greats are at their peaks and meet often on Sundays). The list is not complete as I only looked up the first rivalries that came into my head.

McEnroe vs. Lendl

15 finals in a row (’83-’87)
18 of 19 (’82-’83) Lendl was the 3 seed and JMac was the 2 seed at the ’83 Wimbledon so they met in the SF

Connors vs. Borg

9 finals in a row (’76-’79)

Lendl vs. Becker

7 finals in a row (’85-’86)
5 finals in a row (’89-’91 actually 4 which was interrupted by a RR match at the Masters)

Federer vs. Roddick

6 finals in a row (2004-2006)

Sampras vs. Agassi

6 finals in a row (’95-’96)

Stan Smith vs. Nastase

6 finals in a row (’71-’73)

Connors vs McEnroe

5 times in a row (’82-83)
3 times in a row (1980)

Federer vs. Nadal

5 finals in a row (2006)

Connors vs. Vilas

5 finals in a row (’77-82—interrupted twice by RR play…3 in a row if you consider RR to break the streak).

Becker vs. Edberg

5 finals in a row (’90-’91)
4 finals in a row (’87-’88)

Laver vs. Newcombe

5 finals in a row (’69-’71)

Federer vs. Nadal

4 finals in a row (2008)

Lendl vs. Wilander

4 finals in a row (’87-88)
3 finals in a row (’85-’86)

Connors vs. Nastase

4 finals in row (1976)

Stan Smith vs. Newcombe

4 finals in a row (’71-’74)

Borg vs. McEnroe

3 finals in a row (1979)
3 finals in a row (1980)
3 finals in a row (1981)

Agassi vs. Chang

3 finals in a row (1995)

Federer vs. Gonzo

3 finals in a row (2006-2007)

Federer vs. Ljubicic

3 finals in a row (2005)

Nadal vs. Coria

3 finals in a row (2005)

Vilas vs. Borg

2 finals in a row multiple times (1975, 1976, 1977, ’78-’79)

Lendl vs. Edberg

2 finals in a row multiple times (1987, 1989, 1991)

Sampras vs. Courier

2 finals in a row (’90-’91)
2 finals in a row (1993)

Sampras vs. Chang

2 finals in a row (1996)

These great rivals never met consecutively in finals:

Wilander-Edberg
Wilander-Becker
Agassi-Courier
Connors-Lendl

Federer vs Ljubicic 2005, DOHA, ROTTERDAM, DUBAI

not a "great" rivalry but some good matches

Not much of a rivalry if you ask me but Federer had 6 finals in a row against Roddick before they met this week.

One-sided in the results for sure, but since they have both been ranked near the top for most of the 3 year period, all of their last 9 matches have been in he SF or later.

Their streak sort of lives on since this was a RR match. :)

If not for the RR at the TMC, Federer and Nadal would be up to 7 finals meetings in a row.

Routine bump at the business end of a slam.

IF not for the RR at the TMC, this would be 8 finals in a row where these two have met. It's also their 4th Slam final meeting which is up there amongst the greatest rivalries. I think I'll create a thread about that...

also the 2nd year in a row they have met in the RG and wimbly finals back to back.

No other 2 players have done it even in different years even once. they did it in the same year two times

There is a thread I saw when bumping this up, about two players meeting in finals.

If not for the reseeding at the TMC, Hamburg 2008 would be the 13th straight final between the two occurring in the final of an event. As it is, it's the 11th straight meeting in a final in non-TMC events. They've only met once outside of the Finals or Semi-finals in all of their meetings.

12th straight finals meeting in all events other than the TMC which reseeds players in the SF round.

Their 5 meetings in grand slam finals also ties an all time record, correct?

They could realistically surpass that this year at Wimbledon.

Yup. I just bumped another thread on that. I don't know if it will be at this year's Wimby, but they'll eventually hold the record.

Amazing. They've played in so many big matches already and the rivalry is not even four years old.

If not for the TMC encounters, this would be their 13th consecutive meeting in the finals in a span of just 3 years.

Do you have the stats for players meeting in finals in total, non-consecutively, not just Grand Slams?

I think I have it somewhere...let me find it. BTW, the totals aren't too much different from the conseuctive meetings in finals since those long stretches are where these players are at their respective peaks.
