James Blake v. David Nalbandian

Net Cord

Regardless of the outcome of Blake's match against Robredo, he will be playing David Nalbandian for the first time in the semifinals on Saturday. Who will win this key matchup and advance to the finals?

I expect a lot of great baseline rallies with Blake barely getting the better of David in 3 tight sets.

It would be wise for Blake to attack Nalbandian's 1st AND 2nd serve. Also attack David's forehand which can go off. Blake still is better off the ground than Roddick so Blake has a legit shot to get to the final.

I think it depends on tomorrows Blake vs. Robredo match. If this match will short Blake's chances are bigger against fat Dave. Nalby has one day more rest and it's very important.

This match-up has been top of my most wanted list for a while now, I just think it's very interesting, in a match of two skilled early ball strikers, whether Blake's power or Nalbandian's control and consistency will win the day. Blake will certainly have a crack at the Nalbandian second serve, but Nalbandian will also get into a lot of Blake's service games, so I'd expect plenty of breaks from both sides. Will the improved Blake backhand stand up in a backhand battle against Naba's, one of the best in the world? We shall see.

Blake will probably do what Roddick should have done: attack the serve. As for the result, it could go either way.

I can't believe these 2 have never met before. Within the space of just a few days, we'll see quite a few eagerly awaited contests: this one, Davydenko-Nadal and Nalbandian-Nadal.

Since these two have never played each other - it is a toss up who'll win it - in my estimation. I have no idea who'll win - but it should be an interesting and entertaining date, and mainly because they've never done battle before.

Tough to say, But I'll go with Nalby in 3, although Blake seems to have started staightening his head, I don't think he has the mental capacity to win another super close match, which I believe this matchup will be. Yeah, one could say the same thing about Nalabandian, he tends to be quite a choker, but this terrible, family related accident might motivate him to beat Blake.

If Nadal beats Davy, and manages to notch up another victory over Federer, which Nadal seems to have the formula to do so, we should have a very entertaining final.

The other prospect, Federer-Blake, isn't as interesting IMO.

If Nalbandian plays as well as he did against Roddick then he has a great chance to win this match. Nalbandian should be a tough matchup for Blake. Nalbandian handles pace very well, maybe better than anyone on tour, so that will play right into his hands if Blake thinks he can overpower him at the baseline. Blake will have to mix the spin and pace of the ball to offset Nalbandian's timing. Once he gets into a groove from the baseline he'll be very tough to beat. Blake will also have to be wary of approaching the net, because Nalbandian loves a target at the net.

My Pick: Nalbandian in 3. This will be a tight contest, but ultimately Nalbandian's will to win, as well as his experience will pull him through.

nalbandian is a man reborn after his nephew and godson(?) died AND coming back from the brink of elim to make it to the semis.

i see the matchup as follows:

return of serve: nalbandian
serve: tie
forehand: blake
backhand: nalbandian
footwork: nalbandian
mental: tie
netplay: nalbandian
strategy: nalbandian

the single dominant factor here i think is the mental toughness. nalbandian showed that he can choke away big matches while blake still has yet to prove he can win the "big one." the tmc is a perfect stepping stone for blake and a place of consolidation for nalby. i expect nalby through in three.

I hope Blake wins. I saw something in James today.
He could have just have lost in straight today and have been satisfied about making the semis but he wasn't.

Has anyone noiced something about James shorts?

There's a sheer box in the back of each shorts leg.
At first I thought it was sweat just randomly made in that sort of shape but after really checking it out, it doesn't seem to be the case.

So if he does have a sheer area in the back of his shorts, could anyone explain to me why he has a sheer area in the back of his shorts?

Hey All,

I usually don't like to pick a clear cut winner for matches - and especially when I'm pulling for one of the participants over the other during one.

I still say that it will be a toss up. These two have never played - so not only do we not know how the match will start - develop and end - neither does James & David. They to have to wait and see too.

This will be a fabulous match up on so many levels. So - let's just enjoy what we're sure will turn out to be both of their best effort. Let's not throw mud on any of the semi finalist this year. Win or lose. Let's give them their props. They made it - and accomplished one of their respective goals - outta' many.

Tommy was a little bit more on than James was today. James had his moments, and he made some great shots - so he has it in him - yet so does Tommy. Some players match up better w/this one or that one. Tommy and James play each other tight, like James & Marat - and so on and so on. We've seen threads concerning why this one can beat that one but the one that one can beat can't beat the one that the one they can beat beat. LOL!

Anyway - James just lost three sets and won five - so he has hung tough and represented his hood well.

Good on Tommy to show some 'dedicated to the game' heart and pick up a win.

Another tough semi to predict

I just see Nalbandian creating too much pressure from the back and on return of serve. If that occurs we all know Blake is liable to rack up those UE's. Blake is going to have to put on a serving display if he wants to win IMO

Don't see it happening, Nalbandian to shock the world even more to not only win but to win consecutive matches in straight sets

gogogirl
11-18-2006, 12:42 AM
All,

Some are acting like Blake has no chance - no chance (Godfather movie line) to beat David. J. B. is a better mover and has more speed around the court than David - and if he is on - he is liable to wrap it up in two sets. And I think they both will be equally motivated. We should be in store for some fine shotmaking - indeed.

And we should always qualify/disclaimer/declare that there will be winners and errors made by both. If Blake isn't on his serve in a decent fashion - then he is toast. But ohh wait - the same can be said for David.

I might have to keep getting up out of the bed in order to follow these two matches online - and then sleep late into the morning. LOL!

I can think of individual matches that James has thought through the game but not in any systematic pattern whatsoever.

Either Blake thinks it baseball and misses everything by metres or he could just close his eyes and swing and it will be over quickly by him winning the match.

Why don't you just say "He's American" and stop creating other ridiculous stories for why you have contempt for him?

He does seem very much a hit and miss player.

And that one win was over the mighty Dropshot Dragon in Estoril.... interesting to note that those six losses have either been straight-sets drubbings or else losses from a winning position with the onset of injury (AO and RG). Perhaps the only exception was the defeat to Federer in Rome 7-6 in the third, where I think the latter won one more point in the match.

Nice one fanboy, that was a quality post.

I have contempt for you and for the record I don't hate Blake, but that would be too hard to comprehend wouldn't it ? If you can't see he is a hit and miss player and when the big shots go in he is spectacular, but when they don't he is awful, but hey that would be too logical to comprehend.
