Much needed win for Nadal. His reaction in the end said it all. He looked a bit shaky in the very beginning but after winning the 1st set tiebreak he was on fire. It was good for his confidence because he has been losing a lot of tiebreaks recently...

Well, a Feds-Rafa semifinal seems quite probable now

Very nice bounceback victory for Rafa. He played pretty well, and it looks like his forehand has its sting back. An absolutely incredible forehand on set point in the first set!!!

Champions always bounce back from tough losses. Even though it was only against Robredo who is neck and neck with Fat Dave for weakest link standings in my book, a win is a win.

Two things I noticed in the match:

1. Rafa was extremely happy when he won. When signing the lens as the winning players do, he went "marker crazy"! After signing his name, he kept underlining it like an out of control child with a ting of madness in his smile.:yippee:

2. It clearly appears that Rafa is no longer taking a year between starting preparing to serve and serving. He is picking up the pace...nice to see.

For that to happen Nadal must be the first of his group. I don't think that's possible anymore.

Rafa got a warning? Was this in the first set? As a Rafa fan, I am glad to see him get one. Taking as much time as he has in the past made Ivan Lendl's preparation look like lightspeed on crack!!

You're right. It's not possible. Even if Nadal wins vs. Davydenko and Blake loses vs. Robredo, they're both 2-1, and Blake has the H2H win.

Convincing victory, but Tommy played really well in the 1st set. He made some stupid mistakes, and Rafa hardly ever does them, and there you have the score

I wonder if Kolya feels well enough to play properly against Nadal. I guess not

He got a warning for code violation in his first service game (if I remember correctly) and then had a chat with the umpire during the changeover. He was complaining that the ballkid took too long to throw him the third ball, which I actually saw too (the warning came the second he got the 3rd ball ), but still, it was a good thing it happened early...

After losing to Blake, Davydenko said,

"I'm not ready for Shanghai physically," confessed Davydenko, who played almost every week of the ATP season until the autumn.

I agree that Tommy was good in the 1st set and fought really hard, but Nadal was pretty bad in the very beginning. The commentators said he committed 7-8 unforced errors in the first 4 games.

It seemed to me that once he got into his usual rhythm, Robredo didn't have a chance.

Davydenko shouldn't start using excuses now. I understand the pain of losing but he needs to realize that he can still make the semis. He gets a full day off to rest. Finally, Nobody told him to play 40 tourneys a year.

Never really in doubt, (Nadal having never dropped a set against Robredo) but then again he was defeated by JCF in straights so it wasn't impossible that an upset would happen, particularly at the begining of the match.

Good to see him regain some confidence back. If he'd lost this match... :scared:

Last I heard, Baghdatis was sick of people talking to him about tennis and the TMC and Gonzalez didn't want to be an alternate and would probably have been extremely exhausted if he had made it.

I understand, but to automatically qualify you have to earn it. Those who did qualify, earned it with hard work (mostly ;)).

True Robredo qualified, but that is why there should be a rule that if a player does not make the final eight of at least one major, he should not be allowed to play in Shanghai. There is already a rule that allows the win of a slam an exceptional entry. There should be an exclusion based on slam performances as well.

He has made the QF at RG in the past, just not this year. Gonzo also did not make the QF of a major this year, so would you say that he should not have been allowed to make it even if he earned the right to as Tommy did?

The court has already been adjusted from carpet to slow hardcourt for the benefit of the slow surface players.

Well done Rafa, though giving Tommy a tiebreak was unnecessary. Now Davydenko, probably a bit tougher but Nadal will likely overpower him.

Sawan66728; Nalby is not even close to Tommy as a weak link. He plays bad regularly but he can beat almost anyone when on. Imagine Tommy taking a set from Fed?

You're right, Oz...maybe a little too harsh about the criticism of Fat Dave...it just bothers me when I see a player squandering his talent because of his lack of fitness and mental demons...Kudos for his win against Roddick today, something Robredo probably could not have pulled off...but then again, once the serve is returned Roddick is a sitting duck;)

And I did notice the short handshake...any explanations for it given they are Davis Cup teammates?

 Not sure what match you were watching, but I noticed that Nadal was standing much closer to or even on the baseline than ever before.
He's been working on being more aggressive and I think if you'd compare yesterday's match with a typical clay court match, there would be a big difference. He was attacking constantly and sometimes even inside the baseline...

Sorry you don't like baseline grinders, but I prefer a match with actual rallies to a serve-and-not-much-else match that the likes of Roddick put on...
