I gather it had something to do with a lift accident.... didn't Puerta very nearly fall victim to a faulty lift in his apartment block that crashed to the ground floor moments after he scrambled out? I seem to remember reading a translated article about it last year. Are these sorts of mechanical problems in buildings a recurring thing in Argentina?

One only hopes he isn't a relative of Nalbandian after what happened at the start of last year, but it can't be too common a surname, I guess.

I don't think Nalbandian is a very common surname in Argentina, if I'm not wrong David's grandfather was an Armenian immigrant, so it's not like they're there for many generations already.

Do you think he'll play the last match, knowing there is still something to play for? Last January he made the AO quarters and had that epic encounter with Hewitt that finished 10-8 in the fifth, which I thought was impressive in the circumstances.

A boy died imprisoned under an elevator

The small one of 9 years had been rescued with life, but soon it passed away. The accident would have taken place by flaws in the sensors of the elevator, in the province of Cordova. The victim would be familiar of David Nalbandian

A boy of 9 years today died after to have been imprisoned under an elevator in a building of the district San Martin of this city, informed the Police.
The death of the minor one happened in a habitacional complex located in street Inn 190, apparently as a result of a fault in the sensors of the elevators.

The boy was retired with life by the Special Group of Salvamento (GES) of the Body of Firemen and later he passed away, indicated police sources.

The victim of this episode was identified like Lautaro Nalbandián, of nine years, and the police did not indicate if it has some kinship with David Nalbandián, the tennis player born in the locality of Unquillo that at the moment disputes the Masters de Shangai.

Nevertheless, the informants did not need if the boy arrived to be transferred to some welfare center. “It would have been catched in first stage, in the door of the elevator”, said to a police source present in the place.

Pretty brutal, I still have some phobia about elevators especially one incident when I was a kid scared me to this day.

Yes, I should have been clearer about that, it's a horrible accident. I can't say anything bad has ever happened to me in a lift, but I've always had fears of something going wrong - it might have been seeing too many disaster movies as a kid, but I'm always counting the seconds until I can get out again.

Yes, being a godfather/godmother is a very special thing and usually a stronger relationship than with a nephew/niece. It's like being a second parent.

It is very heartbreaking and the circumstances of this death really tragic. I feel very sorry for David but even more for the parents of the little boy...

having a nephew is different.. anyone can hv a nephew and not care bout him.. but when you are god father, you are sorta given responsibility. the parents think you are a good person for their kid to look up to.. and you are ASKED if you want to be the god parent cz it's important. when was the last tym someone asked their brother if they want a nephew.. or want to be an uncle b4 hvin the kid? ;)

I guess it depends on where you are from.

As for the accident, my spanish is far from perfect, but from what I understood, while he was entering the elevator, it started going up (someone activated it maybe?) and the boy was crushed between the elevator cabin and the ceiling of the door for 40 minutes. Horrible!

The kid was trapped from almost an hour. The elevator dragged him out (from first to second floor).. it's such a weird accident. And the kid got crused between the walls.
In Nalbo's case his newfew are the light of his eyes and he loves kids. And this one was his godson also.
He must be destroyed, literally.
And two years ago his father died suddenly from a stroke, in december. He was devastated with that, it cost him a lot to go on after that.

Poor Family, parents and David. He's such a great guy. With a strong character but he's really nice with the fans. This year he got something he wanted since he touched a raquet: the final of the DC. And this happens to him

Now, talking to the ones that have some education and respect for people, he was devastated when he lost his father the past year by a stroke. But he was in argentina at that time.
He loves his newfew and seems he was really close to this kid. But comes here to not even had the chance of say goodbye, to go to the funeral can be worst for some people.
He may not be in the mood. and also, contract or not he has zero problem in sending to hell whatever it is. He tells it like it is, whoever you are.
Myabe he want to distract himself a little.
According to some information, he seems very numb in this moment.

I doubt that they would force him. If he had retired, Ancic would have taken his place, since they are still in the RR phase. But they are also getting money for each match they play (even if they lose). I am not saying of course that that is the reason why David decided to play. His reason IMO is that he still has a chance to qualify for the semis.

I dunno either....actually I don't think there might be any...but when there's money involved....

I doubt it, if you can pull out for an "injury", I'm sure that losing a loved one comes slightly above.

I know he can retire...but I mean if there's any "legal" issue that might come up...I remember all the fuzz about Agassi's retirement last year...
Of course this is way more important...

With David's temperament?! First I don't think they're that unsensible. But, if they're, Nalby will send them to hell without any doubt.

Nalbandian has it tough, I remember during us 03' they were talking about people wanting to hold his family hostage because they he had money and he had to think about that while he was playing, I hope David doesn't let this effect him, he's always one of my favorites to watch.

Add to that his father's death. Exactly two years ago (on december...). He passed away suddenly by a heart attack. David said he couldn't even hold a raquet after that (he was really, really close with his dad).
Now this, when he has the chance to play the final for his most desired tournament: the DC

Let's see what happens....but to be totally honest, i'm not much interested in Tennis right now, all i care is for David and his family. they must be devastated right now, another tragic loss...i can't imagine how they must feel...

I understand that a lot of people must be worryed about the DC final, but knowing how David is, i think he will play. now, how he will be psychologically, that's a whole other issue....

Not that this is important...but i always thought that Valentin was his godson...doesn't matter right now anyway.

Good heavens, how truly truly awful.

Obviously, Argentina needs better building/lift inspectors. That kind of tragedy should NEVER happen. A few simple safety precautions could have prevented it entirely.

Makes you realize how insignificant tennis is, doesn't it?

Poor Family, parents and David. He's such a great guy. With a strong character but he's really nice with the fans. This year he got something he wanted since he touched a raquet: the final of the DC. And this happens to him

Sometimes a tragedy like this makes one want something even more. Hopefully Nalby will turn his emotions into striving for a DC win. You never know.

An ATP spokesman said that David was told of what happened after he trained today. He will play as there was little point in him returning to Argentina as he would not make it back in time for the funeral.

Good luck tomorrow David. We are all supporting you. (All of us who support him of course).
:awww: It must be really hard not being with his family in such a moment.

Sadly this is not only happening in Argentina. Every year in the news here we hear a kid died crushed under an elevator due to some malfunction. It's very shocking, but I doubt the government is doing anything on the problem.

I just read at the Nalby's forum a post from someone who met him after the trainning (I think, that was the moment when he got the news). She said he was very, very sad and down, almost near to cry, with a terrible mourning expression...
Obviously this person is in Shangai and there are no news about a withdraw, but says that based in what she saw it wouldn't be a surprise.

The problem is he didn't have planned to come back to Argentina after the Masters (whatever result he got). He was going to go directly to the DC trainning. So, if the Argie team will leave on tuesday (as the press said today), maybe he will want to come back earlier... Travelling more than 30 hours, plus the travel to Cordoba and Unquillo to be there only one day there? I don't know.

Nalbandian plays through personal tragedy to reach semis
Thu Nov 16, 2006 2:44 PM GMT

SHANGHAI, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Defending champion David Nalbandian managed to put the news of the accidental death of his godchild out of his mind and claim his place in the semi-finals of the Masters Cup on Thursday.

The Argentine's nine-year-old godson, Lautaro Nalbandian, was crushed in a faulty elevator in the tennis player's home town of Cordoba this week, according to a report on the Web site infobae.com.

"Well, it was terrible," the 24-year-old said after beating Andy Roddick 6-2 7-6. "I mean, I couldn't enjoy the match that way I would like it. Life is like this. I can do nothing from here. I try to push as hard as I can on the court."

World number seven Nalbandian still needed the help of Roger Federer to get him through to the last four for the second year in row and sealed his place when the Swiss beat Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic 7-6 6-4.

Im so glad he came through. The worst thing is it was a sudden death and he wasnt even there with him. At least if he was sick it wouldnt have been such a shock:sad: Good luck to David in Shanghai and next year
