Blake is the "Real No.2"

After last nights match in giving Nadal a good schooling it clearly shows that Blake is the real "no.2" player out there. 5 titles this year he has beaten all variety of opposition bar Federer. He owns the tour bar Fed. Clearly he is the world's "no.2"

Well played blake!

yep! He hasnt had any horrid losses this year! Hes OWNED the tour! Hes made two slam finals, won one, won 2 TMS titles, 1 TMS SF, and 2 TMS QF's!

Surely you are not contending that nobody can beat Blake but Roger? Need I remind you of his less than inspiring performance against Mirnyi? Or Misha in DC? Blake DOES NOT own the rest of the tour. Roger does. Bar Rafa.

As much as I like Blake, peaking mostly for Mickey Mouse events doesn't in any way mean pwning the rest of the tour, and neither does 'schooling' Nadal, as others have done it this year too (which could imply that JCF is the world No. 2 also as he defeated Nadal in straights)

And Rafa is the real #1 I suppose (because of his HTH with Fed).

That makes Federer the real #3.

All credit to Blake for the first win, and I love him too, but he's got to go a little bit further than he has to really be considered world #2 IMO. Personally, I'd love to see that happen- we'll see in '07. :)

When Blake stops laying eggs on a consistant basis we can say he's a legitimate whatever. Until then he's a talented but spotty top 10 player, just like a host of others.

What the fuck are you talking about. Shut the fuck up...there are still 5 other players in his way along with Nadal. And clearly, you didn't watch the match yesterday. They both played great, but against Blake and his type of game (think Berdych) Nadal does poorly. So Berdych should be #2 as well?

Of course Fed should not be in the top 10. I mean, take away his tennis skill and mental strength and what have you got? Nothing.

Fed simply gets lucky about 80 - 90 times a year, while Blake only gets lucky 50 or so times a year. You can't hold that against Blake. He is for sure at least #2, but I say he is #1.

That's stretching it a bit. James is just too spotty. You never know what to expect from him. I remember him playing Federer in 2005 and totally screwing up a huge chance for an upset.

A football analogy to this thread and logic:

Chelsea are 2nd; West Ham beat Chelsea; Chelsea beat Barcelona; Barcelona are current champions of Europe; West Ham are the best team in Europe.

What's that you say? West Ham are near the relegation zone and they only beat Chelsea in a one off, it's all about season long form!

Blake is a credible #5 at the moment. He should be happy to have reached this high without winning anything big.

He didn't win a slam and make a final of another.

Far from #2.

at this point in time and on current form, blake is the 2nd best player in the world

you don't need to win slams to be no.2 just the 2nd best player, and he's beaten most of the top players

gaudio;'s won a slam but he's far from a top player, even thomas johanson won a slam, so ure argument falters

The problem I have with this statement is "on current form"

James Blake's "on current form" changes from day to day, sometimes even hour to hour.

When he's playing relaxed and confident tennis he is a hugely dangerous player who can be a handful for absolutely anyone.

The trouble is - there is a huge gulf between his hot tennis and his not-so-hot tennis. To be blunt, when he's not playing very well his tennis is pretty much awful. This is the danger with his style of play - when he's on it's very good and when he's not it's horrible.

Until James finds a way to close the gap between his hot play and his not-so-hot play, so that he grinds out more tough wins when he's not at his best rather than losing those matches as he has tended to do - he is not in my opinion the real #2, even if I really accepted that concept - the rankings do not lie and on Monday he's in the real #4 - that's the best we can say.

The match against Robredo was a perfect example of a match he should have ground out a win in, and instead managed to put it a very variable performance and ultimately lose 7-5 final set. His match against Mirnyi at Wimbledon is another example. Great stuff from him then he loses the plot completely and drops the 4th and 5th sets 1 and 0.

This sort of inconsistency between his levels of play HAS to be his major goal to correct.

koop
11-18-2006, 11:19 PM
scoobsuk sums it up nicely ; he's too inconsistent - and somehow a bit too anonymous, as silly as that is - to be a 'real' #2 right now. I'm not sure he has the tenacity of a top player either. Still, hope he beats Fed ;)

Halba

ok well at the very least he's the real no.4, as ATP rankings he is at #4 right now.

Billy Moonshine

No, the real Number two is Slam winner and 4 times masters series champ Nadal. Blakes made a slam QF and a Masters final and YEC final, good enough to be number four but lets wait til he even makes a slam final before we hype him up even more.

Action Jackson
11-19-2006, 05:13 AM
The real 2 has to win a 5 set match at least or get past the QFs at a Slam first.
