Hanley-Ullyett Qualify for Semifinals; Bryans Win Epic Encouter Over Damm-Paes
By Sandra Harwitt

http://www.masters-cup.com/4/photos/250x200/hanley_ram.jpg

In what turned into an extraordinarily entertaining match, Bob and Mike Bryan just eked out a 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-5) win over Martin Damm and Leander Paes on Tuesday at the Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai.

Now at 1-1 in the round-robin competition, Bob and Mike Bryan have kept themselves in contention for a semifinal berth this weekend. In fact, all the doubles teams are still eligible to make the doubles semifinal and only one of the eight teams – Paul Hanley and Kevin Ullyett – have already guaranteed themselves a spot in the final four.

“It would have been good to win in straights,” Mike Bryan said. “It was a sticky second set. We had a few chances. A little upsetting to lose it, but made it more exciting. It's going to be a fun match to look back on.”

The Bryans easily handled Damm and Paes in the first set, but were dogged the whole way through the second set, eventually falling away in the tiebreaker.

After exchanging breaks in the middle of the third set, the match went down to a decisive third set tiebreaker. Initially, it seemed like the Americans would win it easily with a 4-1 lead, but Damm and Paes fought back to 5-5, a rally that found the two imitating the Bryan’s trademark chest bump for a point well played.

But two points later it was the Bryan’s doing the victory chest bump as they secured the match and left Damm and Paes with a 0-2 record in their group.

Hanley and Ullyett secured their 2-0 record – good enough to deliver them to the semifinals -- with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram.

It wasn’t just that winning that pleased Hanley and Ullyett. It was that both felt they played top notch tennis during the match.

“I think today, personally, I don’t know about Paul, but I think it was definitely one of our best matches of the year,” said Ullyett, the Zimbabwean. “We converted on our breakpoints, and everything went our way.”

“I think we played really well,” said Hanley, who hails from Australia. “I think our attitude today was very good. I think that was the most important thing, was not the way we hit the ball, but our attitude on the court.

“We really gelled together today as a team, just our communication, just the feeling that we were getting from each other on the court.”

Neither Ullyett or Hanley lost their serve in the one hour, 20 minute match, and were successful in breaking serve on two of three occasions presented – they broke Ram’s serve in the third game of the first set and Erlich’s serve in the first game of the second set.

Hanley and Ullyett won five titles in this their debut season as a team, and also reached the semifinals at both the Australian Open and U.S. Open.

“We’ve had a very good year,” Hanley said. “It’s been a great year. If you look back at the results, it could have been even a fantastic, unbelievable year. But, you know, it still can be. There’s still one more tournament to go here. We’re hoping to finish off with a bang.”

Erlich and Ram now stand at 1-1 in the round-robin portion of the competition.

Hewitt and Hanley team up for doubles

Adelaide, December 15 - Lleyton Hewitt has added doubles to his Next Generation Adelaide International schedule, partnering world No.7 doubles player and Davis Cup teammate Paul Hanley, tournament organisers announced today.

Hewitt has played doubles at Adelaide four times previously – his best result being a finals appearance with Sandon Stolle in 2000. He went on to claim a Grand Slam doubles title later that year, winning the US Open with Max Mirnyi.

Hanley had a very successful year in 2006, winning six doubles titles and reaching the finals in three more events, including Adelaide. A semifinalist at the prestigious Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai, Hanley also partnered Wayne Arthurs to win two Davis Cup rubbers for Australia.

Co-tournament director Peter Johnston said, “Lleyton was looking for lots of matches in the lead up to the Australian Open and he’s going to get plenty in Adelaide with the new round robin format and now adding doubles to his schedule.

“Paul has had a great year and will be in with a real chance of going one better in Adelaide in 2007 and taking out the title. Paul’s regular partner (Kevin Ullyett from Zimbabwe) won’t be in Adelaide, but he’s picked up a pretty handy partner in Lleyton,” Johnston said.

Staged at Memorial Drive, the Next Generation Adelaide International will run from Sunday 31 December 2006 – Sunday 7 January 2007.

Hanley & Ullyett Strike Sydney Success

Paul Hanley and Kevin Ullyett won the sixth title of their young partnership when they defeated second seed Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor 6-4, 6-7(3), 10-6 (Match TB) in the final of the Medibank International Saturday. Hanley and Ullyett, who joined forces at the beginning of 2006, avenged their loss to Knowles and Nestor in the semifinals of November's Tennis Masters Cup.

Hanley and Ullyett were making their 2007 debut as a team. Hanley played last week in Adelaide with fellow Australian Lleyton Hewitt.

Hanley and Ullyett went 52-18 last year, capturing crowns at Rotterdam in February, Dubai in March, Hamburg in May, London-Queen’s Club in June and Stockholm in October.

Knowles and Nestor reached the semifinals at Doha last week (l. to Damm-Paes). They finished 48-20 last year, winning titles at Delray Beach in February, Indian Wells in March, Barcelona in April, Rome in May and Basel in October. They were runners-up at the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai in Nov. to Bjorkman-Mirnyi.

In Auckland top seeds Simon Aspelin and Chris Haggard led Jeff Coetzee and Rogier Wassen 7-6(9), 1-1 when play was suspended due to rain. The final will resume Sunday at 11 a.m. local time.

WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID

Hanley: "We started really well last year and we wanted to do the same this year and continue the good form we were in at the end of last season. We probably played our best tennis of the year in Shanghai.

"To win a tournament in my home country - there are only three a year in Australia - is nice, particularly in front of such a big crowd."

Ullyett: "I took a long holiday - probably too long - and I thought I may be a bit shaky starting off, but I was surprised how well we played."

Hanley and Hewitt search for harmony
09 February 2007

Australian pair Lleyton Hewitt and Paul Hanley are looking for an improvement on their last doubles performance when they meet Belgian duo Christophe Rochus and Dick Norman in the Davis Cup this weekend.

And Hanley believes more than a week of training on the indoor clay of Liege's Country Hall has them on track for the World Group first-round tie in the early hours of Sunday morning (AEDT).

"Lleyton and I, we've been practising a fair bit this week and we seem to be gelling better than what we did when we first played at the start of the year," said Hanley, who is ranked No.7 in the world in doubles.

The pair played together at the Adelaide International in early January, losing their only match in straight sets to Czech No.2 seeds Lukas Dlouhy and Pavel Vizner.

Asked what changes the pair had made, Hanley said: "I usually play on the backhand side, so that's a switch for me to have to play on the forehand side, I just had to get used to that."

Australian captain John Fitzgerald said the combination was "not set in stone", flagging his desire to keep the Belgians wondering about his tactics.

Fitzgerald added Hewitt's lowly doubles ranking, currently No.1,422 in the world, belies his talent.

"He knows his way around a doubles court, believe you me," Fitzgerald said.

Hewitt is also on a mission to improve his singles ranking from No.18 and has included more indoor tournaments in Europe on his schedule for the coming weeks.

Asked whether the Davis Cup would help in his bid to rebuild, former No.1 Hewitt said: "I guess. Davis Cup's different though.

"It's not focusing on the tournaments ahead of myself just yet, I'm trying to focus this week on purely getting as many wins as possible over the next three days.

"Obviously, if I can do that and win all my matches, then I'm going to be pretty confident going into the next few tournaments, but right at the moment I'm trying to get us through to the quarterfinals."

Chris Guccione is the other singles player representing Australia against a Belgian team boasting three players in the top 100, compared to the visitors' one.

Olivier Rochus (34) and Kristof Vliegen (41) are carrying the hopes of the home team in the singles in the absence of Belgium's top-ranked player, No.29 Xavier Malisse, who was controversially left out after turning his back on the side last year.

Christophe Rochus is ranked No.74 and Norman is No.126.

Hewitt and Hanley keep Australian hopes alive

Australia dodged an embarrassing whitewash on Saturday in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas as Lleyton Hewitt and Paul Hanley swept the doubles 62 64 62 over Kristof Vliegen and Olivier Rochus to keep the visitors alive on the indoor clay.

The all-but untested Aussie pair - they lost their only other match last month in the Adelaide first round - quickly found a domineering rhythm as they prevented any repeat of the 5-0 defeat suffered in the semi-finals last September against Argentina.

"We played well, attacked from the start and took it to them," said Hewitt. "We played some of our best tennis out there. We gelled together well considering that we've hardly played together.”

"There were a lot of positives today, it was a pleasure to play with Paul."

But with Belgium still leading 2-1 in front of a home public, Australia must work a miracle to advance into April's quarterfinals against either 2005 champion Croatia or Germany.

The visitors finally stamped their imprint on the tie in one hour, 46 minutes with a fired-up Hewitt and the steady Hanley converting on six of their ten break points chances.

The fatigue factor could start to weigh by Sunday, with both Belgian players going the distance in singles and doubles for their nation.

The scampering, battling Hewitt is his side's three-way man, with the opening reverse singles rubber against Rochus on the programme. Should the former No. 1 come through victorious, it will come down to big-hitting Victorian Chris Guccione to complete the miracle by beating Vliegen, 41st in the world. Australia has come back from 1-2 down on five previous occasions.

"It's tough not to have a lot of faith in what Lleyton can do," said captain John Fitzgerald. "And I wonder about that last match - we have a fresh guy (Guccione).

"If it gets to fifth he'll play better than on the first day. But there are no guarantees in this sport.

"We had our backs to the wall, down 2-0 that was a tough pill to swallow. But we were not going to lie down. The guys played almost faultlessly today. It was a bit of a statement and it shows that we're in with a chance."

Hewitt's doubles victory made up for his five-set opening-day defeat at the hands of Vliegen. Playing doubles for the first time since partnering Wayne Arthurs against Argentina in 2005. His career doubles record now stands at 4-2.

Vliegen and Rochus won two matches at two events last month in Australia and played this weekend for the fifth time in Davis Cup by BNP Paribas.

Well, they remain ranked #11 this week, and moved up to #4 in the race.

Next week in Cincy, hard draw, more or less - make the most of it! No points to defend here :D
Continue this hot streak:)
2R against either Pavel/Waske or (WC) Delic/Isner
Potential QF with Damm&Paes and in the Bryan half of the draw
I hope they can make it to at least the SF:) That'd be nice.

They've got lots of points to defend until the end of the year (USO SF, YEC SF, etc) so I it'd be good for them to do well here, and make up for their early exits in Paris & London :)

The way they were playing in Montreal, I think they're a serious threat!

Paul Hanley, Kevin Ullyett No. 5 seeds Paul Hanley and Kevin Ullyett advanced to the semifinals of the US Open for the second straight year on Tuesday with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over unseeded Brazilians Marcelo Melo and Andre Sa.

The veteran duo avenged their second round loss to Melo-Sa at Wimbledon where they fell 28-26 in the longest fifth set in tournament history.

Hanley-Ullyett will meet No. 9 seeds Lukas Dlouhy and Pavel Vizner of the Czech Republic in the semifinals. They defeated No. 2 seeds Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor 6-4, 6-4, in a rematch of the Roland Garros final in June. Knowles-Nestor won that meeting in three sets to capture their second Grand Slam crown.

Last year Hanley-Ullyett lost to eventual champions Martin Damm and Leander Paes 7-5 in the third set.

Hanley-Ullyett converted four of eight break points while Melo-Sa were two of five on break point chances in the one hour and 15 minute match. Hanley-Ullyett won 81 percent of first serve points and 57 percent of second serve points while the Brazilians won 62 percent on first serve and only 45 percent of second serve points.

This will be Hanley-Ullyett's fourth career Grand Slam semifinal together ('06 Australian Open, US Open; '07 Australian Open).

Hanley will attempt to reach his first career Grand Slam final while Ullyett looks to reach his third men's final. He won the Australian Open in 2005 and the US Open in 2001 (both w/W. Black).

Dlouhy-Vizner advanced to their third Grand Slam semifinal (or better) together ('06-07 Roland Garros). They broke in the ninth game of the opening set and took the lead for good in the second set with a break in the seventh game.

The Czechs converted three of 10 break points while saving four of five break points on their serve. Dlouhy-Vizner won 76 percent of first serve points while Knowles-Nestor 56 percent.

Hanley, Dlouhy take men’s doubles

http://www.brisbaneinternational.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Dlouhy-and-Hanley-w.jpg

Tijana Jaksic Sunday 9 January 2011

Australian–Czech duo Paul Hanley and Lukas Dlouhy have won the Brisbane International men’s doubles title after Swede Robert Lindstedt retired injured.

Hanley and Dlouhy had just won the first set 6-4 when Lindstedt called the trainer on court during the break between sets.

After conferring with his playing partner, Horia Tecau, Lindstedt approached Hanley and Dlouhy to let them know that he could not continue.

Lindstedt injured his left calf late in Saturday’s semifinal win over Germany’s Philipp Petzschner and Austrian Alexander Peya.

This is Hanley and Dlouhy’s first Brisbane International title and first doubles title as a team.

“Yeah obviously you know it’s a little disappointing to win the final like we did, but we played really well I think all our matches,” Hanley said.

“We had a tough first-round match, then played really well again in the semifinal. And I think sometimes, you don’t always have to play your best tennis to win a tournament, you know and that’s what happened obviously today, but we played some great tennis before obviously today’s final. And you know there’s a lot of good things we can look back on.”

Dlouhy said although he knew Lindstedt injured himself in yesterday’s semifinal, he was not thinking about it, but instead focusing on his own game with Hanley.

“But I feel really sorry for Robert – but I mean we won and we have to be happy about it,” he said.

Hanley said they could see Lindstedt was struggling, but they couldn’t hold back their own game as a result.

“We could see he was struggling particularly out wide and we tried to make him move as much as possible or bring him in, you know a few drop shots, try and make him run forward,” Hanley said.

“Especially on the return we noticed … But it’s tough too sometimes, I mean we struggled I think early, saw that obviously he was struggling out there and that can be sometimes mentally a little bit frustrating. But no we did well and we concentrated hard and once we got our momentum going we really kept it up and got that first set.”

The duo has been playing together for just one week.

“We’ve locked in the next three weeks – so the Australian summer we’re playing together – so we’ll talk about that [continuing the partnership] obviously when the time comes,” Hanley said.

“What a great start to the year, I don’t think we dropped a set all week so it’s a really good start.”

Dlouhy-Paes Continue Red-Hot Start To 2011

15.01.2011

Lukas Dlouhy and Paul Hanley will go into the Australian Open as one of the hottest teams on tour after beginning their partnership with back-to-back ATP World Tour titles in the first two weeks of the season.

Following on from their victory at the Brisbane International last week, the Czech-Australian pairing triumphed at the Medibank International Sydney on Saturday by defeating World No. 1 duo Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan 6-7(6), 6-3, 10-5 in the final.

"It's amazing. Something I think obviously we were hoping to do. But this is a little bit of a shock, to be honest," admitted Hanley. "Hopefully we can continue down in Melbourne. We're playing really well, and I'm really excited.

“I'm from Brisbane, so to win in Brisbane and now to win back-to-back in Sydney, everyone loves winning their home title. Doing two in a row, I'm still in a little bit of shock, to be honest."

Dlouhy added, "It's exciting because we never lost a match. We are going to play in a Grand Slam with eight matches in our pockets. We just have to focus for the matches like we did these two weeks. We have to keep it going like easy in the head and not thinking so much about what we have done. We have to look forward to what we have to do."

The unseeded Dlouhy and Hanley initially led 3-1 in the first set, but were pegged back by the Bryans, who went on to clinch the opener on a tie-break. However, the Czech-Australian duo again broke early in the second set and were able to maintain their advantage as they levelled the match.

From 3-3 in the deciding Match Tie-break, Dlouhy and Hanley won seven of the next nine points to clinch victory in 78 minutes.

The 33-year-old Hanley captured the Sydney title for the third time, having previously triumphed in 2003 (w/ Healey) and 2007 (w/ Ullyett); it was his 25th ATP World Tour title. The 27-year-old Dlouhy improved to a 10-12 mark in tour-level finals.

The Bryans were bidding to add to their Open Era record of 67 tour-level team titles and dropped to a 67-39 record in finals. Having recorded a perfect 11-0 mark in finals in 2010, it marked their first defeat in a title match since Basel (l. to Nestor-Zimonjic) in November 2009.

The Americans, who go into next week’s Australian Open as two-time defending champions, were looking to win their second title in Sydney, having lifted the trophy in 2009 (d. Nestor-Zimonjic). They also finished runners-up in 2004 (l. to Bjorkman-Woodbridge) and 2008 (l. to Nestor-Zimonjic).

Hanley, Dlouhy – men’s doubles champs

Saturday 15 January 2011

Australian Paul Hanley has collected his third Medibank International Sydney men’s doubles title with a third different partner, teaming with Czech Lukas Dlouhy to collect the 2011 championship.

Hanley, who won in 2003 with compatriot Nathan Healy and in 2007 with Zimbabwean Kevin Ullyett, joined forces with Dlouhy at the start of this season. The combination is now a perfect 8-0 thus far, having also won the Brisbane International last week.

In Saturday’s final, against the world No.1-ranked team of Bob and Mike Bryan, Dlouhy/Hanley surrendered a first-set service break and ultimately lost a close tie-break, 8-6 after 42 minutes.

As was the case in the first set Dlouhy/Hanley took an early service break in the second but this time they held onto it, taking the set 6-3 and powering through the subsequent match tie-break for a 6-7(6) 6-3 10-5 victory after 78 minutes.

“It’s amazing,” said Hanley. “[It was] something I think obviously we were hoping to do. But this is a little bit of a shock, to be honest. We’re playing really well – hopefully we can continue down in Melbourne.

“I’m from Brisbane, so to win in Brisbane and now to back‑to‑back in Sydney, everyone loves winning their home title.”

The Bryan twins were looking to improve on their record of 67 ATP doubles titles as a team; in eight attempts here they’ve won once, in 2009.

These two are on fire. It's always good to see "nice guys" having a bit of success.

AEGON Nottingham Challenger
QR1: Paul Hanley AUS def. (8) Brydan Klein GBR 6-4 7-6(3).

Probably felt the need to teach Klein not to defect from Australia. ;)

Plays Marcelo Demoliner of Brazil in the 2nd round.

Good for Paul. Loving this result for obvious reasons. Great pick up Vamos!

That is hilarious. Brydan was probably mentally imploding every point he lost.
Good for Paul! Who also could have defected to GBR as he lives there but stayed with AUS.
Plays another full-time doubles player Demoliner next so who knows who will win.. Hanley is 36 wow.
