RR Format Dilemmas

With the RR format, there are sometimes weird situations where one player’s chances of moving on to the next round depend on the results of a match they’re not playing. So I’m wondering…

If your favorite player couldn’t move on unless your least favorite player won, would you root for your least favorite player? For example, would Ljubicic fans ever root for Roddick to win if it was the only way that Ivan could get to the semis?

Or another scenario, would you root against a player you really like if it’s the only way your favorite player could move on?

It’s kind of an interesting dilemma.

i think most people would root for someone they didnt like if it meant their favorite player would go through and if you liked a player but they had to lose for your favorite player to progress you probably would want them to lose because you dont like them as much.

personally i would rather see good matches in the semis than have my favorite player there

I hardly can sleep at night when the situation is that complicated :awww:

Maybe this scenario would encourage respect between Ducktards and Croatards if it were to ever arise

I don't really "hate" any players, so I guess I would just root for whoever needed to win for Ollie to move on. :p

RR format is the right choice for the championships. But in normal tournaments it should be avoided.

RR is the correct format for the TMC, but nothing else.

RR is wrong for anything in tennis, doesn't matter what.

The TMC is a special event, so I think RR is okay for it. But I absolutely agree that RR doesn't belong at any of the other events.

I'm hoping that RR is a disaster next year so that it will be totally eliminated again in 2008.

RR only makes sense at TMC, only works in tennis with 8 players.

I'm starting to think that with the current calendar, it might make sense to have RR at Queen's and not at Halle. Players who want a couple of guaranteed matches on grass to help make the rapid transition from clay would have that option, and players who don't feel that need can go take their chances in the draw against Federer. Other than that, though, I'm not enthusiastic about it outside the TMC.

don't try to defend RR outside of TMC, you'll never forgive yourself.

don't try to defend RR outside of TMC, you'll never forgive yourself.Well, IDEALLY they would get some more grass tournaments and maybe even a Masters Series event and ditch the RR thing outside of TMC altogether, but I can see the advantage to it with the current afterthought status of the grass season.
