TMC RR: Nadal vs. Blake - who will win?

Will Nadal finally get his first win over Blake, a player whom he holds a 0-2 record against?

How will Blake deal mentally with his TMC debut?

I have no idea, really. Blake seems to be good indoors this year, but he's got problems in bigger events. Nevertheless, he's won all matches against Rafa. Rafa on the other hand had a long break and won only one non-claycourt tournament this year. But it's still Rafa
Maybe Blake in 3

hmmm 50/50, but blake knows how to play him and has confidence coming in seeing that he has a winning record over nadal.

You never know with Blake...

If he's hitting the ball well, he'll win in 2.

But this is out of the states, he could get down on himself and then Rafa will win in 2.

So in conclusion, I don't know! But it's all on Blake...

hopefully his confidence and the fact that he has beaten Nadal in both their previous meeting will propel him to victory. And when Blake is on, he can play some really great shots. I can't wait!

Rafa in 3.

Both aren't playing their best tennis at all this moment, so it's difficult to say, even with Blake's favourable h2h. Both his victories over Nadal were in the States, and he does tend to choke on big occasions, though his style of play (if he's at his best) will always cause Nadal problems.

Blake in 3/ Nadal in 3/No idea!

I think a couple of factors might be important. First, this: If Blake doesn't freak out with the pressure of it being the TMC...

and second, Rafa just simply seems to be taking it a bit more seriously. he arrived in Shanghai a couple days before James apparently, and has been practicing really hard. James seemed a bit aloof about it all last month when his qualifying was up in the air, so I think that might make a difference. We'll see! :)

i think it has 3 sets written all over it. blake has H2H advantage and nadal has not been in great form on the hard courts, but it is the TMC so nadal will have extra motivation. i think the score will be 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 but i cannot say to whom

Nadal easily in straights. You have to remember that this is a fast surface, and who wins is determined by who holds service the easiest. Blake is very inconsistent on his service games at times. So all Nadal has to do is hold serve and he will win comfortably. And I heard that Nadal has been working like the devil on improing his serve the last few monthes.

With his abdominal injury?

Well he hasn't had the injury for months, just since about a week or so before Paris. And he's been saying it's perfectly fine now. Some people think the work he's been doing on his serve is what caused the injury in the first place.

I'm going with Nadal, in three.

Although I am a big Nadal fan, I do not think he will beat Blake easily. I wish he could breeze past him, but I don't think so, especially if Blake plays his best. However, I think Nadal will win in three.

Tennis wins! I hope it's a three set match, though, it'll be interesting with the surface. Also, both of Blake's wins against Nadal have been in the USA, so it'll be a different environment and that might affect Nadal positively.

This is amateur psychology but I feel that Blake is "just" happy and relieved to be there, and with not being on his home turf could be overawed by the occasion. Nadal will be really up for it and able to take advantage of any lack of force on Blake's part.

I'm not necessarily saying that...what I am saying is that Blake finds an extra gear when he plays in the US...maybe he is more relaxed / pumped  Outside of the US he struggles somewhat...this is probably more to do with his mental side.

Sure, Blake's game is not a nice match for Nadal...but the Spaniard is still improving and he will find a way to beat Blake eventually...look at Roger with Bandy and Henman for instance.

I would have said Nadal will win tomorrow...but I'm not so sure now in light of the news of his injury.

I feel Blake likes to be the underdog and thats when he plays his best. All the pressure will be on Nadal and thats why I have a lot of confidence in this match besides the head 2 head. He also just scrapped through into the cup and will feel he has nothing to lose.

Nadals injury will likely to effect his serve first and foremost and that also will play into James´hand.

No problem ;)

I agree - Blake performs very well as the underdog...whilst there will be a lot of pressure on Nadal, Blake won't go unnoticed as this is the showcase, and he has NEVER lost to Nadal...so there is a little pressure on him to maintain that record as a loss will pile the pressure on his remaining 2 matches. Whilst I also agree that he has nothing to lose, you could also say that because he is playing all top players this week, he has something to prove in managing to beat them.

Nadal's injury is a real problem...without it I'd go with Nadal. But yes, his serve will be hampered, and it is critical he holds serve 80-90% of the time..particularly as Blake will hammer any serve with nothing on it, which will make ir difficult for Nadal to impose his game from the off in the rallies.

Hey All,

I guess any excuse will do when some say Blake only plays good in the US because of the fans. LOL! The man has won four titles outside of the US. This is such a big occasion - so he'll tighten up. Please! Blake has a 50-50 chance of winning this match even though - he's won their previous two meetings.

This is a new day and tourney - so I don't think James is going to freeze up when playing Rafa. On the contrary - he will most likely play aggressive and try to keep the pressure on. They did go to three sets this year - so both can turn it up when it's their turn to. I don't know who'll win - but I wouldn't attribute some of the excuses used here before the first ball is struck and as it pertains to whomever will ultimately be on the losing end of the match and the reasons why.

On any given day a player wins or loses - so Rafa can win and improve their head to head if he is more on than James.

"COME ON JAMES" "SHOW 'EM WHAT YOU CAN DO" "YOU CAN DO IT"
