The "We Miss Carlos in the Off-Season" Thread

I know some of you are posting that you miss Carlos already. Well, I do too!

I thought I'd start a thread where people could just stop by to say Hi to everyone occasionally over the next couple of months ... whenever the "I Miss Carlos" bug strikes you. :wavey:

You don't need new photos or news articles to post. Just stop here to say "Hey, I was thinking about Carlos today and the time that he ......"
or "I miss not seeing Carlos at the Master's Cup" or whatever caused him to pop into your head. It will keep each of us from thinking we must be the only Carlos Moya fans left in the world. :awww:

So, I'll start...

I'm really thinking this Master's Cup is missing something not having Carlos there. Remember when he played in 2004 and was the only one to take a set off Federer? It wasn't that long ago that he was at the top of his game.
and Cowboy hat photos from Houston Master's Cup :hearts:

I'm trying to figure out what has happened to the older threads in Carlos' forum. I get only 14 that show up on a regular basis. That's less than a page worth and I know he used to have multiple pages. According to the main Spanish Armada page, Carlos Moya has 120 threads. But when I go to his forum, it seems everything before December 2005 has disappeared

Is anyone else having this problem? Have those earlier threads been deleted? Have they been archived somewhere? Or is my computer just messing with me?

Ahh, thank you so much. :wavey:

I couldn't figure it out because I knew the stuff should be there somewhere. My setting apparently mysteriously changed itself only on this forum because I still have the older threads coming up for other people.

But then again, I'm so bad with this stuff, I may have done it myself and not realized it

Well, I'm using this down time to go back and read up on some of Moya's earlier stuff because i didn't start following him till 2004.

One amazing thing I found is that somehow Carlos didn't have his own forum here till after Nadal!!! How strange is that?
Since Carlos was always known as Nadal's mentor, I just figured that Moya was much more well known and popular when Nadal hit the scene so would have had his own forum much earlier. Interesting.....

But at least it's here now for us to enjoy. :D

And looking back is a way to kill some of this off-season time when he's not doing anything new for us to follow. Hopefully the rest will be all he needs to come back strong in January.

Carlos had his own forum before Nadal.

That's what I would have thought...but according to what I read here

http://www.menstennisforums.com/showthread.php?t=6773

Post #7 is wondering why carlos can't have a forum since nadal does

But, since I wasn't around then I have to take what I read as being accurate at the time of posting. Like, I said it surprised me.

how is it possible, this man is out there since 95, & didn't had his own forum until Nadal
came in & made him enough respectable to have his own, thats rubish & if thats true, thats truly unfair

I'm not sure when MTF began, but the link I already posted http://www.menstennisforums.com/showthread.php?t=6773
which was from 2003 specifically mentions in post 7 and 13 that Nadal has a forum and Carlos doesn't.

I totally agree that seems absurd which is why I commented on it originally. But it apparently was the case since I trust posters in that thread, like Claudine who has been a loyal Moya fan for ages. As a tennis prodigy, nadal must have gotten a forum as soon as he started the tour. Moya's fans appear to have had to fight to get him his spot.

I don't remember the timing exactly...but I remember voting for Carlos...multiple times.

I don't think he finished real high. Though not for lack of effort on the part of his MTF fans. Unfortunately the other sports have a much bigger fan base and get more publicity overall. It's always hard for a tennis player to win any of those fan polls when you include other professional sports.

indeed it took a while , before we had a thread for moya even ferrero had during this time a thread especially dedicated to him during the time moya was spain number one!!!!
moya was always behind other teniis players, for exemple corretja took all the attention of the media in the years 1998 et following years, than it was ferrero and than it was a bit moya and than nadal was there. The daviscupfinal was won thanks to moya, he won his two single matches and not nadal, but the media and other fans talks only about the effort nadal did during the daviscupmatches.
Lucky for us, many fans stood behind moya, and posted as much news, articles and photos they could.

It is rather startling that Moya could have had a world #1 ranking and have won the French Open already and still not have his own forum at the time. Since Ferrero and Nadal started years after him, he was definitely the neglected one. I guess because he didn't win everything right away his first year out, he kind of got lost between the guys who had been winning and the new young guns that emerged after him.

Thanks to Claudine :yeah: and the others who managed to bring Carlos some attention!
For a while I wondered if maybe with the focus now on Nadal, Robredo, and the other younger players that Carlos might be discouraged enough to retire sooner rather than later. But now, seeing how he started out slow, sharing the spotlight all along, and didn't let it get him down then; I'm feeling better that he will stick around longer as long as he is still enjoying playing.

may b it was because MTFs wasn't in the FULL SWING by then & wasn't as FAN CROWDY as it is now & so they only picked the quick sight catchers, players who got huge fame in those times (when did MTFs started??? 2002,3???) like Hewit, Nadal, Federer, Roddick & others (if there is any left)

apart from the fact moya never got fame as much as other players, he never showed in his tennis the same thing i would say, something nowAdays they call PASSION appreciated by the spectators, i don't say its not quality or its not good to celebrate, but i think Moya wasn't that celebrating as players are now like & so may be fans never took him that way as they usuallly take a very showy celebrating, player. The more you do crazy things on show, the more you get highlight

I would venture to say Carlos is more popular in Europe and So. America than in the U.S.
Here in the U. S. there are few of us with such sophisticated taste to understand the complexities and beauty of Carlos! Hey Margy? Matt Leinart please!!!!!!!!!No comparison. See what we have to deal with in America, Roddick brats and Blake winers! Then there's Spadea, need I say more.

indeed moya was very cool, extremely calm and emotionless on court. When he lost an imprtant point or game he onlhy strikes with his hand over his head, let down his head and goes to his chair or plays the next ball. It was an expertional moment when moya went to the empire for a discussion. The reporters always said: moya is a cool player, never shows how he feels, always stay the same, only his bodylanguage could be different. You know, hanging down his head, or saying no. The first time i saw moya showing some emotions was during the final in the masters against corretja.. Moya was two sets on head and than suddenly he started to loose the other two sets, and during the fifth deciding set he lost a point from which he tought is was a point for him. But the empire gave the point to corretja. Than i saw moya coming to the net and he put his arms on the net and lay his head on it. It was so strange to see thing from moya.
the last years he started to show more emotions, jetting his raquet on the ground, kicking the ball like a foothball, give some protest etc... but than he lost his concentration. So give me the moya from the beginning;;; no emotions at all on court!!!

Carlos has never sought out the spotlight. He likes his privacy. Only in Chennai-his donation of his winnings to the tsunami victims became public. He gives but does not reveal the charities he gives to because he does not seek recognition. Isn't this part of why we love him? I think that it is partly because of Carlos as to why there is no web site dedicated to him. If Carlos was just a pretty face I would not be so attracted to him. He is more than that.

I have been away from here for a while, not too happy with the loss this evening, but it seems not as important as his achievements in the US Open this year.
Don't even know how well-practised Carlos was for Bangkok, as I believe he was a replacement for Nadal, no?
Anyway, I have been a fan of Carlos for 10 years, started following him ever since the Aussie Open in 1997, when he got to the Final against Pete Sampras ... he beat defending champion Boris Becker early in the tournament (no relation to Benjamin Becker, but it seems strange that he plays another Becker after 10 years!)
I have seen Carlos play 'live' quite a few times in Australia now, and have already booked my flight to Melbourne for A.O. in January 2008 :)

Carlos was VERY young at the Aussie Open in 1997, and could not speak English much at all, a couple of interviews on Aussie TV are classics, wish I had them on tape ;) No video of that final in 1997 either (he lost to Sampras in straight sets, but it was a fabulous tournament for him).
I will try and put a photo here though ... Cheers ...

Buena suerte Carlos :bounce: even if I like Zabaleta as well :)

The only info I can find on this exhibition is on the forum. Look here later on Friday for scores:
http://www.menstennisforums.com/showthread.php?t=113080&page=5

Carlos has a 6-2 record over Zabaleta. Yesterday Charley's buddy Nalbo d. Luis Horna 6-4 6-4 and Monaco d. N.Massu (CHI). Massu was filling in for F.Gonzalez who couldn't make it because of a back injury. Gonzalez was supposed to replace Canas who has a serious wrist injury. All that sounds like a tournament director's headache, doesn't it? I wonder why they didn't replace Canas with DelPotro?

Sorry if I've wandered too far OT but it's hard to find anything happening in tennis right now, as you all well know.

Any news on Carolina's illness that took Carlos out of that other exhibition in Spain? I guess she must have recovered if he's gone off to Buenos Aires. (hope he went without her )

Oh, I think it's just that everyone really liked Flavia. She's a great girl and also a pro, not likely to interfere with his tennis career. Carlos and Flavia were together two years and many thought they'd get married. But, it seems he just dumped her after Wimbledon and immediately took up with Carolina. Papperazi spotted them at Amersfoot and the pix made a tabloid. So, Flavia struck a very sympathetic, probably empathetic, response (who hasn't been dumped?) for having her personal problems compounded by that tabloid coverage.

Apparently everything Carolina does makes the tabloids. I believe her former (fairly recent) boyfriend is a moviestar or something and she's on two tv shows. And one of the first things anyone found who looked for her pic on the internet were sexy photos recently done for a men's mag. Next there was a news item about Carolina being out clubbing with someone else. (Cheating on him so soon? or blowing him off already? We wondered. All denied and nothing changed.) Lately we've had news and tabloid coverage of them setting up housekeeping, complete with real estate and shopping trips. The latest was news that Carlos pulled out of an exhibition event because Carolina was sick. So there's a little concern she may interfere with the tennis.

Most basically, I think we're conflicted. We want him to be happy and play good tennis. We're still trying to adjust our thinking to what came as a shocking change. And we're still wondering if or how a guy who tries to avoid the limelight in his personal life can be happy with a woman who attracts attention wherever she goes and whatever she does.

Ladies, did I miss anything important?
