Who will join the 1st title club in 2007?

Action Jackson

Time to see who will join the 1st title club of 2007? Don't worry if your choice is not there, the other option has been included and more than likely someone not listed will win an event next year.

First Title Winners for 2007

Player Venue Surface
Gilles Simon (FRA) Marseille Indoor Hard
Juan Monaco (ARG) Buenos Aires Clay
Ivo Karlovic (CRO) Houston Clay
Philipp Kohlschreiber (GER) Munich Clay
Steve Darcis (BEL) Amersfoort Clay

His ranking is already enough to gain direct entry into GS. Hopefully soon also into MS. This year he qualified for Madrid.

I hope Monaco finally does it.
And since Del Potro seems to be the most popular so far, I`ll be happy if he has a decent ATP season and keeps healthy. :)
It will be interesting to see how things go to Korolev. I haven´t see much of him yet.

JMDP looked really good, especially late in the season. Confidence level is on a roll too. Good luck. :)

Put another vote in for B. Becker, if he can keep his nerves under wraps. I like his style. :yeah:

I like these threads. :D

I think:

Vliegen - currently the highest-ranked player without a title, already has two finals on different surfaces, and is constantly progressing.

Simon - he's relatively young, can play on both clay and hard, only thing is that he has some very strange results from time to time.

Del Potro, Korolev - two youngsters with an all-around game, I think they will both make a huge progress in 2007 and win their maiden title. This year we saw the players born in 1987 (Djokovic, Murray) winning their debut title, next year will be the turn of the players born in 1988.

Monaco - lacks consistency, having good results at a spaced trend - but when he's on a good week, he can make a good run and win a title - but obviously his chances outside clay are next to none.

Others: Mayer has a good chance, maybe Benneteau, Hajek...

I think Vliegen has a good shot in 07' due to his results this season. Given the right tourney and draw I think he has good shot. JMDP would be my second choice.

I voted Del Potro and Querrey

Del Potro has awesome all around game and big heart he should be clay court tournament in South Amercia, or some smaller European clay court tournament (Sopot or something else) He has game to do it.

Sam beacuse his style could give him title in smaller hard court tournaments at the begining of the year, or after Wimbledon especially but only in USA beacuse he needs Wild Card to do so, Huge Serve + good all around game (his forehand was great in some tournaments and his backhand wasn't so bad, his BH was solid in matches I saw). His game his similiar to Roddick's game, Big serve to set up a forehand

True, but in 2006 we had the likes of Djokovic, Murray, Malisse and Stepanek who hadn't won a title...it was inevitable that they would do it in the not too distant future. With the 2007 list...sure, some of them will eventually win a title, but I don't see it being in the next 12 months unless some of the draws are very weak.

The only one I should have included but forgot to do was Florian Mayer. Malisse won his title in 2005 and not 2006. Those players who were included in the 06 list, well some of those players took a while to win a title and others didn't.

In other words if the list was Marray, Mackin, Flanagan, Bogdanovic then it'd would have more credibility.

Consindering there are always new title winners annually, then it stands to reason that one on that list at worst will win one plus someone not listed. In 05 there were 6 or 7 winners, it wouldn't surprise if there were that many again.

Casachallenger once again lives up to its reputation as a place where players can get their 1st title.

3 out of the 4 semi finalists have never won an event Gicquel, Montañes and Ramirez Hidalgo. The 2 Spaniards play each other as do the 2 Frenchies and Paulo in theory should win this event, but he won't.

Montañes is another final, his 4th one and time to win a title.

Chris Seahorse

I want Werner too. It is always nice to see guys who keep at it, even while stuck in the mire of the challenger tour and way past the age when a chance of a real breakthrough looks realistically obtainable, probably only due to some combination of love of the game of tennis and insanity. And it is even nicer to see such players rewarded for this perseverance. This is what Werner Eschauer has hung around past his 33rd birthday for. This is why he is still playing. Now is his time. Come on Werner, do it. :rocker:

And the Aussie Open too, as they make the surface faster. Too bad he'll shoot only 30, not 50 aces there...

has this ever happened, that a player wins an ATP tournament on his second try? or did somebody even do it on his first try?

edit: ventura did it, of course! i forgot about him.

Yeah, Ventura did it in 1st tournament (Doumbia, Lapentti as well), in 2nd attempt did it Hewitt for example.

To sum up the thread, I must say that we were not so right about predictions, and now it looks funny now how Del Potro and Korolev were about to be next best things (I voted for New Becker, so I don't have a crystal ball as well)

Certainly less winners than expected. It was interesting that some of the first-time winners this season (Monaco, Karlovic, Simon) went on to become multiple title winners later in the year. Darcis was the only big surprise, though.

Del Potro and Vliegen were the biggest disappointments. Del Potro didn't progress as much as expected (he hasn't even reached a final as of yet) and Vliegen's season turned out to be a disaster.
