David's Last Name

Does anyone know for sure how Nalbandian is supposed to be pronounced? I've heard and seen so many variations that now I'm totally confused.
Has anyone heard David himself say his own last name?

Maybe I should have left this for one of the Argentines on this Board as I don't have the right "accent marks" on my keyboard here, but I've heard David say his last name and you put the accent on the last syllable. Hope that helps.

That's right Rose, the accent is in the last syllable...

Yeah, the accent is in the last syllable, at least in Spanish. That's why his name is written like this: "Nalbandián"....you see, the "tilde" is on the "a".

In English many people put the accent in the 2nd syllable, you know, in "...ban..."

Thanks Ma. Estefania - I knew someone here would have one of those "tilde" thingies on the "a" that I don't have on my keyboard!!

I thought in Spanish the tilde "~" only is placed over the letter "n".
In fact, on my screen I'm seeing the accent mark, not the tilde.

How does David write his name in Argentina?

Good question but I'm still :confused:. So do you say "Nalban" quickly and then put the stress on "di-an"? And how do you pronounce each of the 3 a's in his surname?

"Nal" -> "Now" or "Nel"
"ban" -> "Baan" or "Ban(d)"
"an" -> "aan" or "un"

:lol: As you can tell, I don't speak a word of Spanish so please help.

this "Ñ" is not a tilde it's an additional letter we have in out alphabet. This ´ is the tilde, it indicates accentuation. David is written the same way in every language, but it's pronounced differently. In Spanish it would be something like this: dah-veed.

Hey, Rosie, does this remind you of something? ;)

This is soooo hard to explain! Let me try:
In Spanish every vowel is pronounced exactly the same, no matter what letter is next to it:
a= ah
e=eh
i=e
o=oh
u=uh

It would be something like this: Nahl-bahn-dee-ahn You have to accentuate the last syllable.

Did I make any sense? Let me know, I can try this again!

As Jazz_Girl already explained, that thing over the "ñ" isn't a tilde; this is a tilde "´", and it's only for vowels. :)

Well Nalbandian is a common armenian name...most armenians' last names end with an "IAN" and few with "YAN". Look at another tennis player, Sargisian, he's also armenian.

As for pronounciation, I would say nahl-bahn-dee-ahn...

Hope this helps!

Sorry, I did not make my question clear.

I meant: Has anyone seen David himself write his own last name?

I just asked this because so many newspaper columns, television shows,
message boards and tennis tournaments gave opinions different
from this board.

However, thanks everyone for the information. I'll pass it on to
other people who also have been asking about his name.

Different opinions about what? :confused: About the pronunciation of his last name? (which you've already taught us.) Or about how his name is spellt? (which I presume there's only one way.) :retard:

Hi Jazzy...
It's also known that Andre Agassi comes from armenian heritage although he has never really proclaimed it (like David did in Wimbledon 2002). Andre's father apparently dropped the "IAN" (Agassian) to make it sound more american. Not that your interested but Cher, LOL!, Cherilyn Sarkissian, is also half armenian (her father's side).

cheers,
Donna
