McEnroe beats Borg in Dubai exhibition
November 2, 2006

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- In a throwback to one of tennis' greatest rivalries, seven-time Grand Slam winner John McEnroe beat Bjorn Borg 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 in an exhibition match Thursday.

The two faced off 14 times in ATP tour, Davis Cup and Grand Slam play, each winning seven times.

In a vintage performance before a capacity crowd at Madinat Jumeira Arena, the 47-year-old McEnroe threw himself around, produced some trademark crosscourt shots and -- for theatrical effect -- smashed his racket against the court and argued with the umpire.

Borg, three years older than McEnroe and winner of 11 Grand Slam titles, matched McEnroe stroke for stroke before the fitter American prevailed in what was billed as the final showdown between two of tennis' greatest adversaries.

McEnroe looked a little uncertain in the first set, but started getting into rhythm in the second set.

After Borg pulled even at 4-4 with a break in the second set, McEnroe shifted gears and became unstoppable.

McEnroe dominated the third set, which was played as a 10-point tiebreaker.

That would be entertaining to watch, even now (and I mean the tennis, not the tantrums ;) )

Is there any other great rivalry which ended in a perfect tie?

Mac's still kicking Borg's butt.:)Quite the contrary IMO - seeing as tennis is still very much Mac's whole life and Borg couldn't care less about the game (or so it seems) - this score is pretty embarrassing for Mac.

Did not see the match, but I am guessing that Mcenroe must have carried Borg in this one. Mcenroe still plays tennis at a competitive level on the seniors tour, whilst Borg seems to have hung up his raquet. I suspect that Mcenroe could hav thrashed Borg in straight sets if he really wanted to.

What do you mean Mcenroe should get a life? He has six kids, a wife and has other interest like art. I think it's good for the game that he still loves it so much and what else is there to do when your a millionaire; stay at home watching day time Tv.

I don't think Borg ever really cared that much for tennis.

Sounds like a great match to watch, would have loved to see it. I will be getting the Tennis Channel soon, perhaps they will show it? Mac has a geat life now, probably better than most here, why change it?

Nah man, we don't really know if they went all out as much as they can nowadays. Maybe Mac threw the first set to make it interesting. Eased off on the wide outswinging serves to Borg's backhand.:)

:D

Pretty much skipping every Australian open is hardly an act. Heh. Or how about selling all your tennis trophies for some cash?

I was there and did watch the match, and let me tell you there's no way to follow the score. You see Bjorn just next to you playing double-handed forheand, is there anything better? :)

Ernham, Bjorn Borg slept, ate, and drank tennis for 8 straight years. That's why he burned out so fast, and why he struggled later on in his life, he didn't know what else to do. You don't accomplish what he did without caring for the game, as for the Aus open, it was nothing like it is now, half the pro players back then bothered to go, it had very, very little prestige. JMac himself skipped it 10 out of the 15 years he played. Even so, Borg said he would've went had he ever won the USOpen to try for a true grand slam.

:haha: Nobody cared about the AO when Borg was in his prime.

Why aren't you making millions?
Or are you?:p

:haha: Nobody cared about the AO when Borg was in his prime.

I wouldn't say nobody cared, but ya, it was always the redheaded stepchild of the four slams, particularly before the late 80s. Still Borg went to it once, and then never bothered again. Why? I always read the guy as someone that was great at something he liked but he didn't really love and could have easily went without.
