"Former Brazilian tennis star Gustavo Kuerten on Tuesday said Pete Sampras was "much better" than current world number one Roger Federer and that the late Formula 1 champion Ayrton Senna was also better than current star Michael Schumacher. Kuerten, a former world number one himself who beat both Sampras and Federer during his career, told Brazilian TV Globo that the Swiss number one only stands out due to the absence of retired American Sampras. "In Formula 1, Schumacher took advantage of Senna's death to conquer his triumphs, just like Federer took advantage of the vacuum left by Sampras to obtain his victories. Both are good players, but I prefer Sampras," Kuerten said."...

Kuerten: Sampras better than Federer:worship: :worship: :worship:

Former world number one Gustavo Kuerten has dismissed claims that Roger Federer could be the greatest tennis player of all time insisting that Pete Sampras was "much better."

Kuerten also went on to say that he felt Ayrton Senna was a better driver than Michael Schumacher in an interview with TV Globo in his native Brazil.

"In Formula One, Schumacher took advantage of Senna's death to conquer the sport, just like Federer took advantage of the vacuum left by Sampras to obtain his victories," said Kuerten.

"Both are good players, but I prefer Sampras."

Kuerten won the French Open three times and has beaten both Federer and Sampras in his career.

However, he has struggled in recent years, and is now ranked 1,113th in the world after being inactive on the tour since mid-February.

Guga: Pete Is Better Than Roger

By Tennis Week
11/02/2006

Gustavo Kuerten doesn't need to see the results of Tennis Week's All-Time Tournament to learn the identity of the greatest men's player in history.

The three-time Roland Garros champion has already faced him. Kuerten crowned 14-time Grand Slam king Pete Sampras as the best player he's ever seen.

Suggesting Sampras' level of competition was more demanding than the opposition nine-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer faces today, Kuerten said Sampras was a "much better" player. Kuerten according Kuerten also went on to say that he felt Ayrton Senna was a better driver than Michael Schumacher in an interview with TV Globo in his native Brazil.

"In Formula One, (Michael) Schumacher took advantage of (Ayrton) Senna's death to conquer the sport, just like Federer took advantage of the vacuum left by Sampras to obtain his victories," said Kuerten in an interview with the Brazilian network TV Globo; his comments were republished by Eurosport. "Both are good players, but I prefer Sampras."

Former World No. 1 Kuerten won two of his three meetings with Federer, including a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory in their last meeting at the fourth round of the 2004 French Open. Federer was not nearly at the peak of his powers in his three career meetings with Kuerten. Sampras beat the Brazilian clay-court master in two of the three matches they played, including a memorable 6-1, 6-7(2), 7-6(5), 7-6(10), triumph in the 2000 Miami final.

I don't think Pete is much better than Federer, especially that we can't say Rogers's career is near to an end. He has plenty of time to win Slams and other big trophies and records.
Yes, I prefer Pete, but i think Federer is better on clay.

visiually federer's game is more attactive but i'd say wait for roger to retire before making comparisons, the fact that people (and players) can't wait tells you they feel federer will suprass pete's records!

I don't really care how many Slams Roger wins, for me Pete will always be the best. The man introduced me to the game of tennis and I never feel the same thrill when watching Roger. It is all a matter of personal opinion though, for me Pete will always be my favorite, I don't care if ten new Roger's come up.

In the sentimental way, Pete will always be my number one. He played with passion and his matches were very entertaining. He had a wonderful career, but I'm sorry because he hasn't a title at RG.

That will always be a pity but what's done is done. No use in looking back, I just tend to think about the wonderful things he has done. Like winning 7 Wimbledon finals...:worship: :)

Yes, I loved every single final with Pete as a winner at Wimbledon. He was the king and the first time I saw Pete was at Wimbledon in 1993 when he won there his first trophy on the 4th july. What a wonderful memory!

I was late in discovering Pete. I never had any interest in tennis to be honest but I was bored one summer and decided to watch some Wimbledon where Agassi was playing, the commentator told this whole story how he had slipped in the rankings but was fighting to come back and was now in the final. I decided to also watch the final to cheer for this guy since I thought that coming back like that was a pretty good effort. Therefore my first Pete match was his amazing 1999 final at Wimbledon. I think it took me two games to realize that I was better of cheering for this Sampras guy.. He impressed me from that day on and I managed to see all of his old finals later. To this day it still bugs me that I missed so much of his career, especially since he came to my hometown once to play. I hate that he was a couple of miles away but that I never went to see him play.
I am glad he introduced me to tennis though, seven years later I can't imagine not following the sport. He will always be special to me for introducing me to this sport and making me love it.

Meeting him in person is not really my dream to be honest...I like the man but I loved his tennis. I hate the fact that I never got to see him play when I had the chance to see him. Meeting him in person would be great but even then I would probably put a tennis raquet in his hand and ask him to show that great serve of his...
