Horrible match from Blake. UEs, two DFs in one game, etc.

Haas' service was on today and he made only few UEs.

James has gone from the feel-good story of the last year to the Patty Schynder of the men's tour this year.
He doesn't live up to the pressure of being his country's number one player.
He likely hasn't done enough to make it to Shanghai when his destiny was in his hands.

Also...
When the ladies match their preventive injury gear with their tennis outfits, it's cute.
When the men match their preventive injury gear with their tennis outfits, it's a little bit gay.
James not everything has to match.

Yeah, Haas served really well today. Blake was playing at about a similar level to yesterday, maybe a bit better except it was too tough to break after playing some loose games today and Haas didn't get anywhere near as nervous as Clement did.

Today has been fairly uneventful in that every match so far has been fairly straightforward. Really strange to experience after yesterday's matches.

Berdych cannot make it to Shanghai (we can all blame Grosjean for that one too;) ), since the max. points he'd have by winning would be 416, which would put him in 9th place, NINE points behind Boredo!!!

Which is a real shame since his GS results were stunted as a result of running into Federer early in both RG and Wimbledon.

Haas and Berdych have good chance to play in Shanghai because a lot of players have problems with injury. I think that one player at no. 9 after Paris will be play on Masters Cup. Maybe Tommy, maybe Tomas, maybe Mario, maybe Fena... Everything is possibly.

I agree. But looking on the bright side, he seems to have found some of the much-needed consistency, which regardless of the outcome of the next few weeks, will be a major factor in '07, especially since his ranking keeps rising.
He could still end the year in the top-10, and maybe a top-10 seeding at Oz.

He has a shot at finishing 9th if he wins the title, assuming Ancic AND Boredo lose today, then he'd be first choice on the list of alternatives, if one of the top-8 withdraws (most probably will happen, like every season).

Haas

So, how are Blakes chances for Shanghai, now that he lost in R2 of Paris?

Blake lost in R3 (first round BYE).

This is what it looks like after Wednesday R2:

6) Nalbandian 439
7) Blake 426
8) Robredo 425
10) Ancic 402

If Robredo loses TODAY, Blake will make it. If Ancic loses today, Blake will make it, but not necessarily 7th (in either case). Blake's worst nightmare is for BOTH Ancic AND Robredo to win today, because each would add 25 points to his total, meaning Blake would go down to 9th. Blake's best chance is for one of the two to lose today (preferably Robredo).

Ok, well, your post didn't make any sense, really, cause Haas has beaten almost all of the top ranked players more than once. Sounds like you just want an ace against nadal. Heh.

Your exact statement was "I like Tommy, but I don't foresee him winning one match in Shanghai."

I find it hard to believe someone that "likes Haas" doesn't think he has a chance win any matches there. He just beat Blake, did he not?

Ancic needs a SF to overtake Blake so even if both won today, Blake would drop down to 8th position. So Blake still has a relatively good chance since Ancic would be up against Davydenko.

Hey All,

The commentator wondered if James was nervous about Shanghai. That might have had something to do with it. I think his energy level was down. He didn't seem like he could get it up - and ususally - he plays more aggressively when playing against Haas. He just didn't have it today. He may still be feeling the effects of the tonsillitis he recently had, too.

Plus - Tommy played one of the best matches I've seen him ever play. His serving was all the way on.

If James doesn't make it to Shanghai - he'll be disappointed, but he shouldn't hang his head. It just wouldn't be meant to be. He's had a great year, and he has been improving every year. Isn't that what all of the players are trying to do - improve? And if I were him - I'd be proud of every title I won.

"YOU STILL DONE GOOD IN 2006 - JAMES" "IF WE DON'T SEE YOU IN SHANGHAI - SEE YOU AT AO"

He seemed passive for long stretches of this match, but that should not take anything away from Haas who demoralised him with superb serving which he then consolidated with some fine all court play.

Big serves never fazed James before. He was just crapping in his pants at the thought of achieving something big (which he always does). I agree though, Haas is (or used to be) a fine player.

Why do I subject myself to such torture? Why can't I root for someone safe like Nadal? Why am I such a masochist?

I admit it, I think James can be quite the joke sometimes but I really wanted him to win enough matches here to qualify for Shanghai. However I'm not totally convinced that he's recovered from his illness last week. I blame him if he fails to qualify but I feel he has a little more going on than his usual choking.

I hope he gets a chance to play anyway and hopefully by then he'll be 100%. I think he'd be a more interesting contender but if he failed to capitalize there's no-one else to blame.
