I saw it "live". Cañas was amazing :yeah:
Do you know that "Cipa" in Polish means "pussy"? :)

I was actually on the courtside when it was on. Enough said.

I think besides Cañas, only Saretta won 5 "longer than 4 hours" matches in the last six years.

Yep, I was really surprised to see Saretta appearing so many times, and mostly on the winning side. Especially considering what a poor fitness he has.

I think besides Cañas, only Saretta won 5 "longer than 4 hours" matches in the last six years.

They have won almost six "at least 4 hours" matches in the last six years:
Roland Garros 2003: Saretta def. Kafelnikov 6-4 3-6 6-0 6-7(0) 6-4
(3 hours 55 minutes)
Davis Cup 2002: Cañas def. S.Draper 6-4 6-7(4) 5-7 6-4 6-1
(3 hours 58 minutes)

I think from active players we have three possible combinations of beating Clement/Santoro's record. There are five-setters on clay:
Cañas vs. Saretta
Cañas vs. Massu
Massu vs. Saretta
And score should be something like 5-7 6-4 6-7 7-5 10-8

Ha ha, has anyone noticed that Canas' four-set revenge over Hewitt in 2002 was one minute longer than his five-set defeat the previous year? Mind you, when you play one set that lasts a little over 95 minutes (that was the second set, which he won 15-13 in the tiebreak), even a four-setter is bound to run close to four hours at least.

Acasuso vs Phau 2nd set in Toronto or Cincinatti was really long.

Acasuso wins the 1st set. I go to the beach. I went back to my vacations home and the set was still on with 17-16 on the tie-break!

Imagine that match between Tuksar and Chela went to 5th set. Tuksar was close to win the 4th set tie break, and they played at the same level, it would be a much longer match, even though this is very long match for a 4-setter.

Are there any stats about longest game (points and minutes, doesn't have to be the same one) and longest rally? That last one is a tough ask, I know.

What I recall in both departments is:
1) Graf-Sanchez Vicario, 13 deuces, 19 minutes; I have written and kept a note while watching this - apparently it was at 5 all, third set! so I think it was from the 1996 RG final.
I know WTA belongs elsewhere, but I can't come up with a similar example from an ATP match just now.
2) Perhaps the 32-stroke rally between Andre and Pete in one of their GS finals encounters?

There is no thread about it.

The record in doubles is 6 hours 20 minutes:
Naldbandian/Arnold def. Kafelnikov/Safin 6-4 6-4 5-7 3-6 19-17 (Davis Cup '02)
Doubles record in Grand Slam is 6 hours 9 minutes:
Knowles/Nestor def. Aspelin/Perry 5-7 6-3 6-7 6-3 23-21 (Wimbledon '06)
Mixed doubles record is 4 hours 14 minutes:
Schapers/Schultz def. Nijssen/Temesvari 6-3 5-7 29-27 (Wimbledon '91)

By all means correct me if there's anything wrong.

In a match that has started on Saturday and finished on Wednesday (due to 7 rain delays and the traditional [yet stupid] Sunday off) Melo/Sa def. Hanley/Ullyet 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-7 (7), 28-26. It was the longest 5th set ever in any match, singles or doubles (tied with one Wimbledon 89' Singles qualifier).
The game lasted 5h 58m (the last set alone 3h 5m) - they just missed the GS Doubles record (set in Wimbledon 2006) by 11 minutes. The victors saved 4 MPs in the decider.

The longest decisive set is two games longer:
Ireland/Arthurs def. Brandi/Messori 6-3, 3-6, 29-27 (Australian Open '97). At 4h 36m, this is the longest 3-setter ever, at least since tie-breaks were introduced.

Going through the net, I've found 3 longer sets:
Dick Leach/Dick Dell def. Schloss/Mozur 3-6, 49-47(!!!), 22-20 (Newport '67)
Stan Smith/Van Dillen def. Cornejo/Fillol 7-9, 37-39, 8-6, 6-1, 6-3 (Davis Cup '73)
Segura/Olmedo def. Segal/Forbes 32-30, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 (Wimbledon '68; GS record)
It’s worth mentioning Segura was 47 at that time.

Surely at least the first one must have lasted over 7h, but I haven't been able to find out more about it. Do you know more about these three?

I'm curious about the longest tie-break set. I don't know any tie-break set lasted over 100 minutes :o

Dudi Sela - Nicolas Massu 6-3 6-4 6-7(3) 6-4 in 5 hours and 7 minutes! :D :D :D (Davis Cup 2007, World Group Playoffs, Ramat Hasharon [Hard])

^ Funny thing, Berasategui and Filippini played the longest game a couple months after Rusedski won the shortest match against Arriens which lasted 28 minutes (6-0 6-0), so one game in Casablanca lasted as long as the whole match of Rusedski :)
29 minute match included 58 points
28 minute game included 46 points

Berasategui's match lasted only 79 minutes, it means, very likely the longest game was the only "deuce" game in that match

The longest 2-setter: 2 hours 51 minutes
Nicolas Massu - Mariano Zabaleta 7-6(4) 7-6(6) (Kitzbuhel 2004)

Nadal won the second longest:
4-setter (Mathieu),
3-setter (Moya, has tied Cherkasov's record) and

Hello Voo de Mar, how are you? I haven't been here in a while... :)

A few questions:
1) What's the quickest set in both singles and doubles?
(I think the record known to me is 14 minutes. I wonder what was the duration of the famous Bill Scanlon Golden Set.)
2) What's the quickest TB set in both singles and doubles?
(I thought about this one during the Wimbledon final, after both were blazing through service games up to 5-5 in 25 minutes. It seemed like a 32-33 minutes 7-6 was possible, but the next game was by far the longest of the set, and there wasn't a TB at all.)
3) What's the quickest doubles match?

In June this year I watched for the first time RG final from 1987, Wilander had finished the point against Lendl with excellent backhand down the line at 83rd stroke, and Bud Collins said that a couple rounds earlier, Lendl had been playing a few more than 100 strokes against Nystrom! Also another interesting thing is connected with this match... I read once Nystrom won third set of that match after saving 11 setpoints. It can be a record of saving setpoints in a match. 11 match points is a record of Open Era (A.Panatta def. Warwick).

Serving for the 3rd set at *5-3, Lendl wasted 9 set points with Nystrom breaking on his 7th BP of the game, which lasted 28 minutes (so Berasategui-Filippini only tied the record) and 36 points (15 deuces). In the next game Nystrom saved two more SPs to hold for 5-5. Lendl was then broken again making 4 UEs on his service game. Play was suspended due to darkness after 3h 17m of play with Lendl leading 4-0 in the 4th.

Longest women's match: In 1984, Vicki Nelson-Dunbar defeated Jean Hepner in a match lasting 6 hours, 31 minutes 6–4, 7–6(11). One point lasted 643 strokes and 29 minutes. The longest rally in tournament play was one of 643 times over the net between Vicky Nelson and Jean Hepner at Richmond, VA in October 1984. The 6 hr 31 min match was won by Nelson 6-4, 7-6. It concluded with a 1 hr 47 min tiebreak, 13-11, for which one point took 29 minutes.

You shouldn't be surprised if I didn't add some matches around 4 hours. Usually I count match time from all Grand Slam matches with solid scorelines on official websites, and later on ATP website there is different match time. I don't know why it happens often, the same with number of aces

No,no. I don't want to say that your statistic is bad . I am very very impressed with your efforts and I am very grateful that I can see all that stats on one place and I only want to help you because I am also big stats freak .

Thank you, I'll add a bit (for those who didn't read about this 5-day match and for future generations :p )
Most of the information can be found in this thread (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showthread.php?t=105281) but again, I think great stuff like that just drown in the sea that is General Messages forum.

Even that one is already gone as the longest pro set regardless of singles or doubles

Wimbledon 2010 R1: Isner def. Mahut 6-4 3-6 6-7(7) 7-6(3) 70-68 in 11 hours 5 mins :D

Duration of each set: 0:32, 0:29, 0:49, 1:04, 8:11.
Another sub-record for most time played on a single day was set yesterday - from the start of the 5th set after the first adjournment up to the second one at 59 games all - 7h 6m.

Once and for all (and sorry for the triple-post): the OP picture clearly shows the match time of Santoro-Clement being 6:35.
Why does pretty much any other source has it at 6:33?

I can't tell you because I didn't see that match. If there was 28 deuces, the game lasted for sure more than 30 minutes. Maybe someone who has written that info on wikipedia slipped up (20 and 28)
Hi Voo.
Take a look at this search query (http://news.google.com/archivesearch?as_q=20+deuces&num=10&hl=en&btnG=Search+Archives&as_epq=Filippini+%22longest+game%22&as_oq=&as_eq=&ned=us&as_user_ldate=1996&as_user_hdate=1996&lr=&as_src=&as_price=p0&as_scoring=a)... It's possible the writer made a mistake, but the LA Times is no Wikipedia. In any case this may be the source for these numbers, but I guess we won't know for sure until you meet one of them ;)

An example of the case at the AO 2004 Safin's time

Safin's Total Time at 2004 Australian Open - 21 hours 6 minutes (1266 minutes)

Round IBM* (& ATP site) ITF** Difference
1st RD (vs. Vahaly) 2:26 2:28 +2 min
2nd RD (vs. Nieminen) 2:39 2:42 +3 min
3rd RD (vs. Martin) 3:25 3:25
4th RD (vs. Blake) 3:08 3:08
QF (vs. Roddick) 3:23 3:25 +2 min
SF (vs. Agassi) 3:42 3:43 +1 min
F (vs. Federer) 2:15 2:15
------------------- ------ ------ -------
Total’s 20:58 21:06 +8 min
* - Time according to 2004 Australian Open official site
** - Official time according to umpire’s scorecard (via ITF Media Notes)

But also on the ATP official site in the Safin's career highlight section i found this info - "2004 - Began
season as runner-up at Australian Open (l. to Federer)...Played a total of 21 hrs. and six mins. and his 30
sets played was most in a Grand Slam in Open Era, tying Harold Solomon's mark set at Roland Garros in 1976".

So it's a bit weird that in one site we have two variants of infos. They get the time stats via IBM, while
21h 06m - via ITF post-tournament info.
I think the main difference is that the umpire on his device and the IBM-staff (who started supporting grand slams in 90's) on the tennis court timer, start the time differently. The chair umpire starts the time when calls "time" right after warm-up, while IBM may start the stopwatch after umpire says "play" right before the 1st serve, or maybe something else.
The official time in any case is determined by a umpire’s scorecard, not by on-court timer

I don't usually take into account qualifying rounds, Challengers & Futures in my stats - those matches aren't include to the official records.
