that's a silly thing, it's just for money, to tv channels to see more Federer and Rafa. If tournaments begins on sunday, it's for money. Atp would like to write the players' names on their shirt, it's for money. That's bad, we don't want to see just the top players, there are a lot of others great players we'd like to see too. I don't like round robin format, because it will penalize certain players.

My favorite band is Guns N' Roses. I saw them in Paris in June 2006. It was amazing. I think Axl Rose is the best singer of all time. But that's personnal. I'm looking forward to the new album wich have to come before the end of this year. Come on! :worship:
I love other stuff too :
Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, WASP, The New York Dolls - Johnny Thunders, Blind Melon, Van Halen, Kiss, Thin Lizzy,The Sex Pistols,PIL, CCR, Deep Purple, Social Distortion, Jeff Buckley, Alice Cooper,The Ramones, Chuck Berry, Michaël Monroe, The Doors, Deep Purple, Nazareth, NIN, MC5, Black sabbath, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Velvet Revolver, Noir Désir, the Clash...:rocker:

Sparko - no one here likes Guns n' Roses more than Nico. So you're forgiven too.

Brahna - The Brooklyn Follies was a great book. But the quote is a bit misleading. Auster is a unique writer, and he looks at the quirky part of people's characters, especially the people that make up NYC, and how people are seeking to find themselves - which sounds cliche but with Auster, it doesn't seem cliche.

What the Players Say about round robin format. From tennis.com

“I thought it was an interesting idea in the first place. Now I'm not a big fan any more of it... Just keep the knockout system. That's so unique about tennis, one bad day, you're out.”
- Roger Federer

“I totally agree with the change in the system to round robin… that favours the show, the players and the tournament. Everyone. I am thrilled.”
- Rafael Nadal

“It can be strange, we are not used to it. It might be interesting, but I don’t think the whole calendar can be played using that format.”
- David Nalbandian

“The tournament directors want to have the best players the whole week and it’s understandable.”
- Marat Safin

“We didn’t have a say in all this. They only consulted the Nadals and Federers.”
- Nicholas Mahut

“It seems to be a good idea for the tournament directors, the TV and the fans. It’s good for the players because it gives them a second chance.”
- Sebastien Grosjean

“Only economic arguments are behind all this. Losing a match and winning the tournament at the end, is something I have trouble to accept.”
- Fabrice Santoro

“I have played in the Masters, which is the only tournament right now using the league format, and it's good for the players. Even if you have an off-day you have the chance to win the title.”
- Carlos Moya

“It never hurts to try it. We can try it. First of all, I think the main issue is how the fans respond to it. If it increases the interest in tennis, then I think we should go along with that. They are the ones paying our bills.”
- Dmitry Tursunov

“I don’t like it, a win against a top ten player becomes less important. A player can beat Federer and not be able to qualify.”
- Edgardo Massa

from the ATP website

http://img124.imageshack.us/img124/9655/rrrd3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The ATP will conduct its one-year round-robin trial testing the three following formats:

· A 24-player round robin draw consisting of 8 groups of 3 players. Each player will play two guaranteed matches in the round robin stage. The winner from each group will advance to the final rounds (quarterfinals) and then will play out the tournament per a traditional elimination format.

· A 32-player hybrid format consisting of a 16-player “Main Draw Elimination Round” with the 8 winners joining 16 other players to make up the 8 groups of 3 players. Each player will then play two guaranteed matches in the round robin stage. The winner from each group will advance to the final rounds (quarterfinals), and then will play out the tournament per a traditional elimination format.

· A 48-player round robin draw consisting of 16 groups of 3 players. Each player will play two guaranteed matches in the round robin stage. The winner from each group will advance to the final rounds (round of 16), and then will play out the tournament per a traditional elimination format.

Damn it!

Just hope everybody will say that's it's a goddamn nasty idea, it's not because de Villiers comes from wonderland and alice, mickey mouse and so on that he has the right to change tennis just by snapping his fingers. It's not wonderland here, it's the real life! And we're here to say we disagree!

Then the first round on grand slam during 3 days with the beginning on sunday isn't good either. Then it's one chance on 3 to see the players we want to see : Look at that, I explain : :shout:

I'll buy a place for 2 days at Roland Garros, the first monday and tuesday on centre court, then I can go on annex courts if Nico plays on. But we're limited to 2 days on a "big" court, the others days, we just have access to annex. So I take one for the first sunday on annex courts. But imagine, if Nico plays on sunday on centre court, :help: :banghead: that wouldn't be fair!

So after moaning and complaining, (i'm not sure someone will read that til the end!):) I just have to pray  to see Nico in 2007 at Roland Garros! :bounce:

Peter Bodo is a blogger for Tennis magazine and ESPN.

He wrote a funny blog on round robins. Well, it would be funny if it wasn't so sad.

Bodo muses on what Etienne de Villiers, ATP Chairman, might have been thinking when he came up with the new round robin system:

"OK, everyone. You may think the mission is to come up with a format that nobody understands without an instruction manual, but it's not that simple. We also need it to be one that will lead fans to suspect that players are throwing matches, diminish the importance of a huge upset, create a tournament chockablock with meaningless matches, and feature a 'draw' that will be about as easy to read as the Excel spreadsheet of a Fortune 500 company. And let's make the whole thing about who gets to the single-elimination stage math-based!"

I renamed the thread - figure we can chat about the insane changes that Mr. Disney is making.

This was posted on GM - which was originally posted on the comments area of Bodo's chat.

Basically the ATP is going to put the smaller tournaments out of business.

"From 2009 there will be no IS Golds (currently Memphis, Rotterdam, Dubai, Acapulco, Barcelona, Stuttgart, Kitzbuhel, Tokyo, Vienna). Now we have 9 TMS and 9 IS Golds. (Adds up to 7 on clay, 6 on outdoor hard, 5 indoor).

From 2009 we will have 8 Masters including the Asian event, and ten "Open 500" tourneys (the winner gets 500 points) plus the remainder being "Open 250" events - an unspecified number, (the winner gets 250 points).

To cut a long story short, this makes the lower-tier ATP events relatively less attractive overall points-wise to the players, so any tourneys pushed down to Open 250 are losing out measurably.

From what I've gathered (and this was confirmed by someone over on Steve Tignor's blog) there is still an ongoing discussion about having the Madrid TMS effectively as part of a combined ATP/WTA event on clay, pre Roland Garros. Which may mean Rome TMS is not safe.

So, whatever happens, two current TMS get downgraded because of what is expected to be an Asian hardcourt event taking priority over them. The clay events are in the firing line - both Hamburg and Monte Carlo. If they get "Open 500" status, which will be a downgrade for them, and the current IS Golds, of which there are nine, are considered for the remaining nine places in the IS Gold series, it still means one current IS Gold gets downgraded. Unhappy tournament directors/sponsors, without a doubt.

The idea is that the TMS winners will get 1000 points, and the ATP hopes that the Slams will agree to double their Slam winner points to 2000.

Essentially this is all designed to make some tourneys disappear. I'm basing these comments on an interview I saw with deV recently, and some additional research into the ATP's plans."

That's too much changes, they don't need that! Of course, the tour needs changes but not these ones! I already hate thoses changes because they come from de Villiers, so I'm sure it won't work!

And Mr Donald cares about money, not about top players or big tournaments, nothing else than MONEY!$$$$$

He is Uncle Picsou!$$$

I got confused with the title changed

I just can't fucking believe this??!?!?! no, this man doesn't need to get fired, this man wants to be killed!!!! :fiery: ... this is just sooooo stupid!!!! and the amount of points is completely ridiculous!!!!! that doesn't help in any circunstances!!!

Besides like Brahna said, it'd only add a couple of zeros to the amount of points that Federer has, and it's sooo stupid!!! if he cares about the big events then why he wants to eliminate Hamburg, Rome or Montecarlo, is he stupid or what?!?!?!

I'd hate it but the players need to go to a strike if this doesn't change, like it happened in MLB long time ago, this is completely ridiculous! and I really wish that this time Federer thinks about it twice before beign agreed with this, not like with the RR that he said first it was okay and then he started saying that it was stupid :o

I can't believe that such an asshole is in charge of the ATP ... I really can't believe it :o ... can I say the word "bomb" again?!?!

The ATP schedule need changes, of course, but not these kind of changes, that would mean to putt tournaments, MS and GS from one surface during the same period of time, not to be playing clay then grass, then hardcourts, then clay again and if DC arrives and some insane choses grass when the tour is beign played in clay it's even worse :smash:

sorry for the rant :haha:

Bethanie Mattek, left, plays in a Night Tennis match during the 2007 in Miami Wednesday, March 21, 2007. Sony Ericsson's Night Tennis brings a glow-in-the-dark theme to the game whereby only the clothing, court and balls are ultra-violet reactive. In an effort to attract a younger crowd to a sport known for its formality, Sony Ericsson has created a series of events simply called Night Tennis, combining fashion, club culture and the ball-and-racquet sport.

And after that, you still wonder what Uncle Picsou$$$ wants to do with tennis!

Brahna - I just put an article up about that on my blog. I was in shock when I read it on USA Today.

Sony Ericsson wants to put the "glamour" back in tennis.

Get this quote from the head of Sony Ericsson's global marketing department - "This is all about being hip and cool. Somewhere along the way, tennis became more about backhands and forehands and lost some of its glamour."

Geez - I thought tennnis was about backhands and forehands. ;)

so if it's only about beign hip and cool why in the name of god I'm taking tennis lessons?!?! nobody told me that I only had to show up on court dressed like that!! all the right part of my body is still in pain for learning the freaking forehand and silly me now knows that it's for nothing :smash:

this is just unbeliavable :o

I really don't mind the night tennis - they have night bowling - it's fun.

It's this emphasis on everything except the game.

All these promotions are fun and have their place. But it s/b secondary, not primary.

Just my humble opinion though.

Andy Roddick is my new hero... :inlove:

Even though Andy sucks on clay and would benefit from the plan, he still was one of the 64 players who SIGNED THE PETITION against Mr. Disney's plan to eliminate MC and Hamburg.

Andy....  :worship:

I don't think Fed signed the petition. It might be referring to something later in the article - can't remember exactly but I think it was about round robins. I'll doublecheck - Alexito posted it in his thread.

The German Tennis Federation is suing the ATP over Hamburg.

:yeah: die Deutsche!!! Good for them! I hope they are successful. One thing, as I was reading the article, it said that the round robin format had been dropped this month-does that mean only for March while they try to work the "bugs" out of the system that were so apparent after BA and Vegas or forever?

NicoFan
03-30-2007, 12:54 PM
Round robins are completely gone...thankfully! The ATP voted against having them and the Player Council also voted against them.

Y'all need to go to GM and read the 2009 ATP calendar thread.

It really will be only 2 clay but 6 hardcourt events starting in 2009.

Poor clay court guys - they are really getting screwed here.

Our Nico is going to have to work on his hardcourt game because there aren't going to be many big point clay events anymore.

kidnicky
04-03-2007, 03:43 PM
just 2 clay events?!?! just 2 MS in clay or 1 MS and RG?!?!

NicoFan

2 MS events plus RG.

I guess I won't be watching much tennis in 2009. My favorite time of the year is the European clay season. And Mr. Disney just destroyed that. :(

Poor Hamburg - it's really being downgraded - will be the smallest type of event now. Looks like it will take place after Wimbledon - part of the summer European clay season.

kidnicky
04-03-2007, 04:19 PM
can I tell you that you should stop defending the clay season on that thread of GM NicoFan?? I just read it :o

actually looking at the calendar it seems that most of the tournaments are staying but the thing would be the points and all that shit, the battle between Buenos Aires and Acapulco for that stupid Open 500 is going to be a hell!!! although I know that probably Acapulco will win for the thing that it's the most important in the LA swing and because they're moving the tournament to a bigger place that looks like almost like an MS site.

I think that I'll get more about it when the final calendar will show up  I'm really sorry for Hamburg, I can't believe that they practically delete this MS and then Monte Carlo no more a MS and the crap continues  ... and the lenght of the season is almost hard to believe :tape:

btw NicoFan someone was asking you wich hardcourt player skips almost all the clay season .... :rolls: ... don't answer to that 'cause the post with the list would be of more of 2 pages

TommyB.
04-03-2007, 05:42 PM
