Future Swedish stars

I guess I just wanted to start a new thread to discuss the guys that play futures. I *try to* run a yahoo group on the Swedish players, and I was wondering if anyone else out there was interested in the likes of Filip Prpic, Alexander Hartman, Robert Lindstedt, Pablo Figueroa etc!? So, anyways... here's an update on Filip Prpic this week:::

=============================================
Sadik Kadir won his first Uncle Tobys International at Gosford
yesterday when he defeated Sweden's Filip Prpic in 3 sets 6-7 6-0 6-0.

The blow out in the second and third sets came about when Prpic
rolled his ankle during one of the extended rallies that were a
highlight of the first set. Although the Swede put on a brave face he
was badly hampered by his injured ankle.

The first set produced some exciting rallies as both players relied
on their strong ground shots to win the points. Prpic was the
favorite to take out the match as he was seeded number four in the
tournament and Kadir was the number eight seed. Kadir however had
other ideas as he pushed Prpic to the limit going to advantage points
in the tiebreak before Prpic won nine points to seven.

Kadir who has had a successful few months leading into this Uncle
Tobys Tour by reaching the final of the White City Open and winning
the Manly Seaside tournament continued his good form in the second
set. Prpic was made to work overtime in the long rallies and
eventually the match turned, as did Prpic's ankle in the second game
of the second set.

Although after receiving treatment from the tour trainer Prpic
continued to play on but realistically was only making up the number.

The leading 24 players in the first three events of this Uncle Tobys
Tour now move to Cessnock Tennis Club for the masters event. First
round matches in the masters will start next Tuesday 24 February.

Great! Thanks so much.

I think it's a great idea to run a thread about the lesser know Swedish players.

When we speak of the future of Swedish tennis, I think of the Kalle Anka Cup (Donald Duck Cup). All the great Swedish players (except Jonas) have won in the Kalle Anke. Stefan listed it as his most memorable win. :)

Here's a link to last year's winners. I believe it is held in July every year.

You are welcome. Every Swedish fan needs a Kalle Anka boost. :)

It seems that you can find all the Swedish tennis names in the rolls. I was looking for the list of past winners. I was looking at it the other day, but I can't find it this morning.

All those big names that have won the trophy I don't see Söderlings name there though or Mikael Pernförs either.

Pernfors was never #1 in his region. Hence his lack of success at the Kalle Anka Cup. His tennis improved a lot when he was at college. I think he won the college champs a couple of times(?).

As to Söderling, I don't know why he didn't succed. He was good as a junior though. He won the Euro Champs U-18 and Orange Bowl U-18 in 2001.

Maybe he was just a bit unlucky, or improved rapidly as he got older.

I've got my eye on Tim Goransson though. ;)

Yes, Pernfors at 18 was only playing tennis 1 hour a week, so maybe that could explain it as well.

Too bad about Carlsson with all the knee injuries, seeing a man with reverse kicking serves and roundarm passing shots winning the French Open would have been fantastic.

Aphex, hvor bor du i Sverige?

BTW: does anyone know where you can find pics of former tennis-stars? I'd really like to change my avatar to late 80's swedish cult-player Jonas Svensson. (ripping your idea here George WH) :wavey:

For en O8 Aphex, du e jättebra. I will try and find a Jonas Svensson pic for you.

Go to this page http://www.arag-world-team-cup.com/en/turnier/historie/ then go to 1991 and you will find a picture of the 2 time Roland Garros semi finalist Jonas Svensson. Then you copy his image and reduce the size, that is what I did with the great Kent Carlsson.

Great avatar Aphex, I think my brother (GWH) and yourself have the best ones, I just need one to compete with. What do you think about the fat Austrian Horst Skoff that won Båstad?

Horst Skoff, wasn't he like the austrian equivalent of bad-boys Emilio and Javier Sanchez?

I love that pic Aphex, he was a legend old Jonas Svensson.

Skoff, was a fat Austrian guy who loved pissing off Muster and winning Båstad.

Johan Brunstrom/Alexander Hartman did not qualify

Guluzian is a nobody, he is Number 900 !!! in sweden. I do not know where he has this wild card???

Calle Hansen is playing college Tennis in USA, Robin Brage and Mikael Ekman are normally playing only tournaments in sweden. Little ones, mostly not counting for the World Rankings, only for swedish rankings.
Brage is ranked 51 in sweden and Ekman 73, also Ekman is the better one. The swedish rankings are not allways realistic!

The only younger swede who has a chance is Ervin Eleskovic. All others have no chance, evein Ekman, Brage, Hansen and so are not so old, all 20-22. But they are really not good enough. The nearby swedish future is not so great, no future players, but i think in sweden they are trying to get sth. back on track, so in 5-10 years sweden maybe will have a nicer future. Who knows?

Time to write sth. about this guy:

Michael Ryderstedt!

Congratulations to his biggest week of his life so far! I really hope he can take this great experience to improve his game more and more over the next months. Now, he really knows that he can play with the real big guys, that he can beat them! He will not storm the rankings like Pimpim did this year and the end of last year, but maybe we'll se Michael back in some ATP Tournaments very soon. If he continues like this: No Problem!

But i will guess that he will also have poor tournaments. But on the whole he is on a great way!

Can somebody please translate these two articles for me? All I can work out in the first one is that Sebastian was indeed in Rotterdam, practicing with players. And that he turned 17 on Valentine's day. I don't understand anything in the second one... I will be forever grateful to the person who translates this :worship:

Top-100 spelare i världen.

Hur mycket är du beredd att satsa?
Jag tänker satsa allting tills det inte är kul längre.

Here´s the translation:

Last week, Thomas Johansson traveled alone to Marseille, but he has now both his coach Magnus Tiedeman and a young and promising sparring partner with him in Rotterdam. This is Sebastian Carlsson from the tennisgymnasium in Uppsala who has the great possibilities to travel around and to practice with the Swedish players and also with other top ranked players.
Carlsson could not have a better 17th birthday on monday, because the winnig match of Johansson means that he can stay and practice at least 3 more days.

What do you expect from the tennisgymnasium?
That I get hard and especially serious practice.

How has your tennis season been so far?
Not that good. But I have though played some good matches. I was born 1988, but I played SM (Swedish championships) for 16 year old guys and was quite successful.

What is your goal for 2003?
To win Kalle Anka Cup (big Swedish tennis event for children). And I want to become a better and stronger tennis-player.

What is so much fun with your sports?
You need a lot to become a good player. You need to be intelligent, have to be in good physical condition and you need a feeling for the ball.

What is your goal in tennis?
To become top 100 in the world.

How much will you give for tennis?
I will give everything until it´s no fun anylonger.

This interview must have been done 2 years ago, or?
Did you find it on the web??

Oh, that´s a difficult question cos it´s difficult to explain in English
But it´s not like Bert, but more a shorter German "i". So a bit like "eating", but shorter. So try Bert more in the "eating" direction and then with a German "e" in the end - like the beginning of apple = Birte.

But I can imagine it´s not that easy to pronounce it and I can tell you I hated my name when I was younger. But when I got to know that it is originally from Sweden, I could accept it ;)

Little star power, waning interest attribute to plight of Swedish tennis
By Ravi Ubha [Feb 18]
Special to ESPN.com (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/news/story?id=3248017)
http://assets.espn.go.com/photo/2008/0215/ten_a_soderling_580.jpg
Don't recognize him? That's Robin Soderling, and at No. 59, he is one of only two Swedish players in the top 60 in the world.
Tradition, it seems, counts for little in modern day tennis. Just look at Sweden.

The Scandinavian nation that produced the rock-star like Bjorn Borg, graceful Stefan Edberg and efficient Mats Wilander -- not to mention dozens of other world-class performers in Sweden's heyday -- appears to have cast tennis aside as other sports surge in popularity.

The sport's governing body continues to leak financially, television stations get paid to show Davis Cup encounters and, judging by media involvement, interest in Grand Slams is minimal. The immediate future looks similarly bleak, but the Swedish Tennis Federation and players -- both past and present -- are trying to turn things around.

Last month, for instance, what's believed to be the country's first private academy was launched in Stockholm. It is being overseen by former world No. 2 Magnus Norman.

"We've had a declining curve as far as success," said Mikael Stripple, the federation's director of sport and a former coach of 1999 Australian Open finalist Thomas Enqvist. "If you compare it to the 1980s, we're far away from that level. If you look at the number of players in the top 100 or 200, we just have a fraction of the amount we used to have."

2002 Australian Open winner Thomas Johnansson leads the way at No. 54, while Robin Soderling, just back from a wrist ailment, and the ageless Jonas Bjorkman are Nos. 59 and 86, respectively.

Johansson, who's had to contend with one injury after another, will turn 33 next month, and his good friend Bjorkman turns 36 a day earlier. No other man is in the top 200.

Sofia Arvidsson, at No. 62, is the only woman in the top 200. She faded following a promising 2006 and didn't even get her own page in this year's WTA player guide. Only one junior, male or female, cracks the top 100.

If that wasn't bad enough, monster server Joachim Johansson, who was on course to become the next Swedish standout, retired this month due to ongoing shoulder problems.

"We were hoping that Joachim and Robin would be in the top for years to come," Stripple lamented.

Being at the elite level was scarcely a problem for the men in the past: Grand Slam champions popped up one by one. Borg collected 11 Grand Slam titles, and his place in the game is well documented. Wilander came next and left with seven majors, one more than Edberg, who was famous for his classic serve-volley game.

There were substantial layers underneath the elite players in those days. Along with Norman and Enqvist, Mikael Pernfors was a Grand Slam finalist. The likes of Joakim Nystrom, Anders Jarryd, Henrik Sundstrom, Jonas Svensson, Magnus Larsson and Kent Carlsson ensured a hefty Swedish contingent in the second weeks of Slams, too.

Thirteen men finished in the top 100 in 1987, and the same year, six different Swedes captured a combined 18 titles, according to ATP stats wizard Greg Sharko. The country, remarkably, reached seven straight Davis Cup finals from 1983-89.

"We were so good that we spoiled everyone at home," said Bjorkman, himself a former world No. 4. "There was no way we could keep winning Davis Cups, have No. 1s and Grand Slam singles champions. We played the Davis Cup semifinals last year and were not even nominated for the top five teams in Sweden. I think people do forget some of the achievements we still create in tennis because they compare everything to the past."

With track and field grabbing more and more headlines -- Carolina Kluft is the world's undisputed heptathlon queen -- and hockey, soccer, golf and alpine skiing flourishing, there was minimal media presence at Sweden's Davis Cup opener in Israel last week. It was also a struggle to find a TV station willing to air September's home semifinal against the U.S.

Bjorkman and a few pals, including Wilander, work on a new Swedish tennis magazine that was launched last year following the demise of another national tennis publication.

The number of kids playing is on the rise, but only after the previous 10 years saw declines, according to Stripple.

"Tennis is not that big anymore," said Jonas Arnesen, a veteran sportswriter for the daily publication Svenska Dagbladet.

Why the downturn?
Apart from those other sports snaring potential tennis wannabes, Stripple pointed to an archaic club structure, due to be revamped by January 2009. Money is lacking -- the federation has been in the red annually in recent years -- as consistent sponsors stay away. The lack of money generated by the sport, for example, has meant that some good Swedish coaches find greener pastures. (Stripple is responsible for juniors, educating coaches, Olympic matters and anti-doping, and he works with tennis themed schools to boot.)

Bjorkman wasn't about to use Sweden's sparse population (about 9 million) as too big of an excuse, saying "a few good players on and off" should be in the pipeline. He did, however, target the federation.

"We were always telling them a lot of ideas of what we think we should do to get tennis in Sweden back on track," he said. "Unfortunately the ideas never went further than when we spoke."

"We need to get out in schools, we need to inform about tennis, we need to write about tennis, we need to start a tennis community," Norman added. "Tennis has been not as proactive as track & field, ice hockey and soccer in Sweden, so it has lost a lot of interest."

Backed by Catella and with the federation's blessing, the academy features juniors aged 15-18 by invitation only. Enqvist is among those who lend a hand, and if all goes well, younger players will be allowed in.

The complex has three hard courts, four clay courts and a gym.

"It's a new concept that started because we see that Swedish juniors aren't practicing enough, and they don't have enough quality in the practice," Norman, renown for his work ethic and fitness on tour, said. "The way we handled the juniors in the '80s, a lot of them came straight from the clubs to the ATP. Now we feel the club level has gone down a little bit."

Meanwhile, the federation's new system next year, will see 23 tennis districts across Sweden compressed to seven regions so that juniors have better competition and a more nurturing atmosphere.

Norman forecasted a renaissance, eventually.

"Everyone wants to see a new Grand Slam winner," he said. "For the moment things are a little bit down, but with the work we're doing at the academy and the work the federation is putting in, I think we'll see a revival again in eight to 10 years."

Great Article.... I was on the Nordic Light Open site today and I found another good read, mainly about WTA but it's still very interesting.

NNLO Announces Scholarship For Young Talents

[14/02/2008 17:00]
Nordea Nordic Light Open announces a scholarship -- the NNLO Junior Awards -- for young talents from the Nordic and Baltic regions. “We think it is important that young girls see that support is available,” says Åsa Svensson, NNLO Sports Director.

Up to three scholarships, their values ranging from €1000 to €8000, will be distributed in 2008. The recipients will be the most talented young players of the Nordic and Baltic regions. The drive is a part of the Nordea Nordic Light Open Player Support Program.

– We want to become a part of the young players’ careers on an early stage, and support them all the way to the WTA Tour, says Åsa Svensson, who for long was Sweden’s top female tennis player.

– The scholarship is, in combination with the tournament Nordea Masters where the best junior players of the regions meet to compete, a great springboard to reach higher goals.

Apart from financial aid, the scholarship involves a mentorship with a player of choice from the Nordea Tennis Team -- the next step in the support program. Nordea Tennis Team consists out of Sweden’s number one player Sofia Arvidsson and Fed Cup fighter Johanna Larsson, Danish super-starlet Caroline Wozniacki and Finland’s first lady Emma Laine.

– When I first got out on the tour I had a great support in Åsa Svensson, who then was Sweden’s number one, says Johanna Larsson. She had gone through what I was going through and always knew what to say. It is a great asset to always have an experienced player to consult. I would be more than glad to be of help to a younger player.

Ambitious, driven, talented players might then become a future part of the Nordea Tennis Team themselves, gaining additional financial aid and companionship on the tour.

– Being a part of the Nordea Tennis Team has given me the opportunity to get to know the other girls in the team in a natural way. We sparr together and shop together, which has been very important to me when on tour. Also, the financial aid that I have recieved for training and travels has helped me develop as a player, says Emma Laine.

Brydolf loosed today, 6-0 6-0. Perhaps the energy against older players with higher tempo took his game out, won 4 matches and gained some points, well done Patrik! It seems he will play in Belarus next week aswell, good luck there! :)

- The situation had Kalle not been close to breaking the other's serve. He is fighting to be back and win the second set with 6-4. In the decisive set, it is very nervous game. At 4-3 will serve the breakthrough thanks to Kalle dares penetration legs on. After serving his home set for a bit shaky, "comments junior coach, Henrik Holm, from Melbourne.

Robin Olin had an easier trip to the main draw of her first Grand Slam tournament. In the qualifying finals defeated Leandro Toledo from Germany by 6-4, 6-4.

- Robin was clearly more active than the other and when he was with his quick feet lifted the tempo so hung not with the Germans. The second set is Robin in trouble at 3-4, 15-40. But when he raises himself again and Toledo has not a chance in the final vulture. It was a good match both in terms of game and attitude-rate, "says Holm.

World number one Daniel Berta was never threatened during the qualifying tournament, where he was released only nine game in their two matches. In the qualifying final victory was to figures 6-4, 6-2 against home player Andrew Whittington.

- Daniel has done well on strength exercises and rehab training as he drove since late December and is now rid of their problems in the shoulder. We have been able to train fully since we arrived here on Saturday. The lines in the game starting to come into the wind and today was the server that created a sense of security in the game. 20 aces in two games bodes well for the main event, "says Bertas coach, Julius Demburg.

Tobias Blomgren is already ready for the main event, making all four Swedes will start his boyish single. As many attended the U.S. Open junior singles last year, but before that you have to go back to the U.S. Open in 1998 to find as many Swedes in the main lot of a Grand Slam tournament in the boys' side.
