Madrid 3R: Novak Djokovic def Andy Murray 1-6 7-5 6-3

Great fighting from Nole. :bolt:

Murray was totally frustrating him in the first set and he had to save 3 BPs in the first game of the second but he hung tough and held. Murray still broke first in the second to lead 4-3 but played an awful game to get broken back and then another to get broken for the set. From there, it was all Novak as Murray started shouting at himself. :o

Murray outplayed Djokovic in 1st set w/ selective agression picking on Djoke's backhand but in the 2nd set Murray seemed to lose steam as if expecting Djoke to lose the match as opposed to earning it. In the 3rd, Murray had given up and Djoke was hitting freely w/ confidence. A surprise outcome but given Murray's tendency to go away, not too surprising.

2 future elites of tennis where Murray was getting back every ball and frustrating Novak but he came back, didn't get down on himself and prevailed in the end. Lots of errors but a very exciting match nonetheless

Murray - he needs a good sound slapping for that one. Awful the way he just got worse and worse in the match from the start of the second set.

Handed it over, totally dreadful.

One of his worse defeats of the year because he was in the winning position and had a meltdown.

I think there's room for a bit more pain, to be honest, to make sure the lesson is well learned.

That was fucking awful from Murray from *4-3 in the second, and his stamping about howling was counterproductive.

He plays very mature tennis at times but he has his immature days and he handled this one like a petulant 9 year old.

I don't think it was a choke this is only a recent thing reagrding not closing out matches and then it's occaisonally it happened In Toronto nearly all the time. Cincy against Henman but not against Fed. Not against the top 10's basically. Ljubo held it out well, I think it's just mental lapse which I am confident will get better over time, first time in a while he has dwelt on it as well (which basically lost him the match).

Overall pleased with how Murray is developing, and I thought when him and djokovic were both playing well (djokovic for a short time) in the first set, Murray looked the better player, also just imagine when he puts on more muscle which is what he will start to do in the winter with Brad (Djokovic was something like 12 kilos heavier I believe today).

You lot prob all disagree but looking forward to how well he does in Basel and Paris. (still got an extreme outside of chance of Masters Series or not?)

Well, Djokovic would have never lost the match from 61 *43 up and Andy certainly found a way to do it, in a fashion we can always expect from him. If he thinks all this load of negativism helps him play better he's ina serious trouble. Once Djokovic got the break back in the second he never hesistated and was much more patient in the end. Good luck to him. Andy really has to do something about losing control over his emotions and eventually the fight.

Spot on. Murray's lack of maturity let him down, his mind just went AWOL for about 6 games, all he was concerned about doing was muttering stupid comments. Simply can't do that at this level, until he gets it out of his system he's going to struggle. Also expands a lot of energy, he looked absolutely shattered after an hour and a half.

Congrats to Nole, his maturity won him the match, perhaps he could teach his friend a lesson in how not to get discouraged no matter what.

I would say the opposite in the first and most of the second Murray had Djokovic completely stumped on how to get through him and it was only when Murray completely lost it that Djokovic didnt have to go for so much anymore.

I mean Wimbledon- grass. Nobody looked like beating him for 3 years apart from Roger at the tournament.

Blake scored a win on grass too but that's about it as far his his grass record goes in the last three years. Even when below his ultimate best he continued to sweep aside the rest to make the final. Took a grand performance of maturity from AM to down him.

“It wasn't like he won the match,” Murray said afterwards. “I feel like I gave it to him. It's obviously disappointing that I didn't close the match out because I was pretty much on top of him.”

“I was controlling the match,” said Murray who now heads for next week's tournament in Basle. “I was controlling all of the way the points were going. I was using my slice. I was mixing the pace up. I was returning his serve. He was getting frustrated.”

The thing is that Djokovic has done better than Gasquet and Murray in the slams. Djokovic is the only one out of them to reach the quarters of a slam and he also reached the fourth round of the Wimbledon just like the other two except that he stretched Ancic arguably the second best grass courter. So I don't think it is fair to say that he is far behind Gasquet and it could be argued that he is ahead of Murray.

Having said that i think that Gasquet and Murray are both better players than Djokovic and will achieve more in their careers.
