Nalbandian: "Henman is scum" ("es la peor basura"

When they were 5-5 in the third set and Nalby serving at 15-30, the umpire was not sure whether the first service was in or not, Henman told Nalby it was in but he did not give Nably another first service. That's Nabandian's version.

Yeah, why does everybody hate Nalbandian then?

I think only Argies like him.

Henman pulled a Henman for him while on top of the match, what more does he want? Box of donuts?

That doesn't make sense. Henman thought it was in but the umpire thought otherwise so why is Nalby blaming Tim?

In this case, Henman is no better than JHH.
And that says a whole lot.
Something similar happened today at the Sharapova-Peer match. Peer was getting ready for a 2nd serve, Sharapova raised her hand, Peer dumped the ball in the net. The umpire didn't see and gave the point to Maria, Peer complained but when the umpire asked Maria she denied the whole thing. Of course Eurosport replayed the moment and it was more than clear that Maria lied. :smash:

And now Henman. At his age he should know better...

That doesn't make sense. Henman thought it was in but the umpire thought otherwise so why is Nalby blaming Tim?

The umpire wasn't sure the ball was in or out (the call was probably made by the line judge. Henman said it was in but didn't want to let nalbandian replay the point.
According to David the umpire told him that if Henman says it was in and lets nalby serve again then he wouldn't complain.

I think it was something like that.

GlennMirnyi

Tennis is a job man, they aren't playing for fun. Nalbandian shouldn't complain to play more, as he would do good exercising to lose all that fat.

Well, if I recall well, Henman blamed Coria in Cincinnatti 2003 for not giving him a point.

According to the Argentine newspapers, Henman said "First service when he was 5-5 15-30? He lives in a world of dreams".

hahahaha

That quote is missing a key word. The actual quote (my emphasis, obviously) is

"First serve at 5-5, 15-30 when I think your serve was in? I think he's in a dream world"

The line judge clearly thought it was out, Henman wasn't sure, and since there is no mark you have to accept the line judges call.

Ah, so Nalby was complaining about Henman's ethical stance.

I think it meant Nalby felt that since Henman agreed with him that the ball was in, Henmen should give him a point back (when they were playing the next point) even though the umpire didn't overule the previous "out" call.

Hopefully we will hear more on this in his blog. I haven't seen the match and the internet translation of the article to english isn't too clear so I can't really give an opinion. Henman, to his credit, has always been very sportsmanlike apart from an unfortunate incident with a ballgirl, but he hardly hit anyone this time...

I turn on the TV and all i can watch from you is porn about old women, gays, kids, etc.
You are insane.

You attack other people and you are the worst.
Ah... you are good at stealing.

You are racist. The european society is the most racist. Millions died because of that. WWII...

You can purchase videos of kids beig abused by sickos.

You invade countries to bring " freedom".

You have a prince who killed his wife ( lady Diana , the whore) and that Harry guy who disguised himself like a nazi soldier.

Your prince is a stupid. You can see his face if you don´t believe me.

He ***ked with his bodyguard.

You are all drunk.

And your accent is a shit, disgusting.

You create sports and you are bad at them.

Even the tea is stealed.

It's moderately ok if you want to question him while at the match, but whine to the press after he played is dumb.

Wow Einstein. Why don't you get informed and read some history instead of that bullshit? You'd understand what the problem is.

If the situation was as David has described I think Henman's behaviour in that concrete point wasn't classy at all , but Nalbandian's comment calling him " la peor basura " is exaggerated and out-of-line

This is my first and possibly only post in this forum. I am just pissed as how you guys give an opinion without knowing what really happened. It's just as if you were looking at the very first opportunity to blast a guy you either dislike for several reasons (tennis skills not being one of these unfortunately; I thought this was a tennis forum).

And I am not defending David. I dont participate in these forums but I often read the messages and it appears that every single tennis player that voices his opinions concerning other players or other aspects of the game get blasted (apart from Federer, of course, he is allowed to say whatever he wants). I am defending objective jugdgement, a quality that most of you appear to lack.

The original interview was made in Spanish by ESPN and I add both (the Spanish version and my translation) below. Hopefully you will be able to give your opinion based on what was said after the match. If you dont believe David, that's not my problem. Just I ask you do not blast him for being a lazy, fat ass and an underachiever. He says what he thinks at all times. It's not to do with the utterly rubbish diplomacy or politeness that other players (and some posters) appear to uphold.

And the translation (as accurate as I could do):

In the end, there was an argument about a point. Could you tell us what was that all about?

At 5-5 (third set), I was serving 15-30 and he returns out. The line judge calls out (the serve). I ask the umpire and he claims he couldn't see it from where he was. I then ask Henman and he says it was in. I said to him that if it was in, I had to make the first serve again, but he opposes. I tell this to the umpire and the umpire says that if Henman says it is in then it corresponds a first serve. I ask Henman again if it is first serve and he says that the serve was good but he didn't concede it. All the gentlemen talk is pure smokescreen. He is the worst scum.

I was just pointing out a guy like you that when you see a thread where there's the oportunity of bashing Nadal, argies, moonballers etc you seize it even though surely you don't give a fuck about that thread but you just behave like a troublemaker and rowdy.

Oh please.....Henman was well within his rights. Players have lots of calls go against them that they think are bad, so it's only right that they should keep the benefit of calls which go in their favour. He was only doing what 99/100 professional tennis players, INCLUDING fatass Nalbandian, would have done. I can't believe the fat man is still in the tournament after his last few matches, although Marat will send him straight back to his rally cars and pizza.

and its alright for Dave to call Henman "the worst scum"

Well first of all it a new type of insult. The "fat" insult has done its time.
Secondly Dave doesn't mean Henman physically is scum (unlike the "Fat" insult) but that he acted like scum. Its always nice to tell people what you think about their behavior. But what you think about their physic is better kept to yourself. Same goes with the Piggy insults. When you insult someone's physic it's more stupid and wrong than commenting on their behaviour.

It's also isn't right when you insult someone's behaviour, but it's a necessary critic. Remember we learn from mistakes;) However I don't see how much one can learn from a wrong deed like being fat or ugly e.t.c.

In this case, Henman is no better than JHH.
And that says a whole lot.

I think David Nalbandian is making a lot out of something trivial in the same way the Serena Williams did in the 2003 French Open. Unlike Serena, David won the match, but then 1 point is very unlikely to decide a whole match.

You could hear the guilt in henman's voice when being interviewed about his decision to do nothing about the call.

If you "think" the ball was in, you have to act accordingly.
And in return, you would get the same gratitude back.

Pitiful to see a veteran give in to the situation and slap his opponent in the face with blatant gamesmanship.

Could also be a lack of respect towards Nalbandian. We all know he would bend over for Federer if needed.

I feel that fatty Nalbandian shouldn't have gone way OTT and called Tiger Tim "the worst scum." The fat man therefore opens himself up to equally derogatory comments directed back at him. :) Even if Tim was using some gamesmanship, I'm sure he did it with a smile and felt he was only doing what most others would have done - I don't think it's fair to compare him to the poison midget Henin-Hardenne. He wasn't being deceitful - he said he thought it was in, he just didn't think tennis etiquette required another first serve.

And come to think about it, why did moonballer Ferrer say it was the "worst day of his career" when Tiger showed him how you play tennis ie not with a Western grip and ten miles behind the baseline?

The players are the ones with the grandest ability to dictate the outcome of points. If you want fair treatment from the opposition, you must be fair to them.

I only just logged in and this is all news to me, it wasn't mentioned in Sky's coverage at all. I can see why Nalbandian has a legitimate complaint and it wasn't the fairest thing to do on Henman's part, but a) Naba hasn't always been a model of sportsmanship himself and b) for heaven's sake, let the condemnation fit the crime! If Henman is "total scum" for not giving him another first serve, what about some of the other behaviour from players he must have seen over the years? Because he must certainly have encountered worse than this in his time.

He just doesn't think before he opens his mouth, when you combine this latest pearl of wisdom with the mocking of the Croatian journalist's fashion sense in DC earlier this year, plus his kid-in-the-school-playground comment, "Nobody likes him" about Hewitt.... it all adds up to a very tactless individual.

Moaning bitch.

Henman pulled a Henman for him while on top of the match, what more does he want? Box of donuts?

wtf, you blind or something?

Bandy schooled him, he did it against Benneteau in the first round, he did it against Federer in Shanghai, he's done it against Hennerz here, and he will do it again.

You poms are fu*king delusional idiots.

Nalbo should've asked for a challenge, but I guess he already lost them, so fuck off.

There's no challenge system in Pista Alcala where the match was held. But it really doesn't matter to you, right? You will find something else to tell Nalby to **** off. ;)

I hope a moderator erase this big thread soon.
I just read a lot of ppl insulting David Nalbandian instead of talking with arguments about who was right in the 15-30 ball discussion.
David is a fantastic tennis player " the best contender , the hardest " in federer words.
Maybe thats why lot of mediocres ppl attack him with stupid things like if he is fat or not .
They cant talk about his tennis because THE GUY GOT FANTASTIC TENNIS.
Please stop insulting and lets talk about tennis.

Vamos David !

This is interesting...because in the Times today, Nalbandian is quoted as saying: "He always talks about being a gentleman but it isn't true. It was the worst kind of garbage."

So did he really actually say "Henman es la peor basura" or "es [what Henman said] la peor basura?"

It wasn't on centre court so I don't think Nalbandian could've challenged.
Nalbandian should've just kept his mouth shut, vastly more important should be that he won the match.
If Henman cheated openly then yes he should complain, but as has been said Henman merely "thought" the serve was in, and (not unreasonably) wasn't about to give another first serve to his opponent at such a crucial stage, going against the umpire's stance, on a possibly wrong perception.

Looks really like a minor incident. Wow, somebody thought he got a wrong call and did not get a let for it. And his opponent took the decision as would all footballers gladly take their penalty shot for a dive and then get celebrated for scoring the goal. Of course it would have been very fair of Henman to give another first serve, but this is not a kindergarden birthday party, if there is tension between players and the match on stake, you better expect that everybody only acts to his own favour. And Nalbandian should have let rest the case, after all he held this game anyway.

Honestly I find it quite sad when others feel the need to celebrate someone's loss, but hey...we are different, people are different. It a choice we are able to make, and I don't wanna be like that.

And don't you worry, I'll be here to congratulate Roger if he wins tomorow. And to support David, like I always did.

And that´s the way it is... You have to watch the tennis as what it is: a sport. There´s no need to create discussions because you dislike some player. And seeing you´re Brasilian and Nalbandian is Argentinian, knowing the rivality between these countries, makes me think that you hate him because of his nationality in one of his aspects. And you shouldn´t, you should admire Nalbandian´s tennis like the rest of the Argentinian players, as i do with Brasilian players.

Exactly. But that Brasilian can't see that. His hate for Nalbandian knows no limits. He used to annoy me at first, then he made me laugh, now I feel a bit sorry for so much bitterness and hate. I wonder if he has any valid reasons to hate Nalbandian so much?

I can guarantee you that, at this point in time, Lleyton has more friends in the locker room than Nalbandian does, especially after Fat Dave's behavior during Davis Cup. Nalbandian seems to be growing less mature with age, while Lleyton is clearly maturing. I used to like Nabandian when he was coming up, but all he seems to do recently is complain, mock, whine, and taunt. One of the professional tennis writers said that the only time you ever see him smile is when he's smirking at somebody, and that about sums up his glorious personality.

Be honest, you liked Hewitt even when he behaved like an asshole. And that's fine, one can enjoy Hewitt or Nalbandian's games even if one does not like some aspects of their personality. In fact, nobody is perfect. I care about their tennis game, not their personality.

Nalbandian is careless. He doesn't measure his words, and he doesn't give a crap about what other people think about him. Love him or hate him, that's the way he is.

Btw I was at the match (had just arrived on time to watch the last few games), I remember them stopping play to discuss, but couldn't hear what was said so had no idea there was a run-in. I did notice Nalbandian got pretty fired up afterwards and started cheering his points in an agressive way.

When they were 5-5 in the third set and Nalby serving at 15-30, the umpire was not sure whether the first service was in or not, Henman told Nalby it was in but he did not give Nably another first service. That's Nabandian's version.

I don't understand. Did Henman say it was "in" to Nalbandian but not to the umpire? If Henman acknowledged it was in to everyone then wouldn't it be the umpire who gives him a 1st serve?
