Will Nieminen defeat the optional king James Blake in Stockholm?

These two have had close matches and Blake has won all 3 of them. This is virtually a home tournament for Nieminen and both are in their 2nd Stockholm Open final.

Will the trend continue with Blake winning or will Nieminen turn it around?

2006 Bangkok Hard Q Blake 6-2 2-6 7-5
2006 ATP Masters Series Miami. Hard R32 Blake 6-3 4-6 6-1
2003 Long Island Q Blake 4-6 6-2 6-3

Hmmmm...close matches aside, Blake does have a very good record vs lefties and Nieminen has a shocking record vs the top players. I'd go for Blake again, but, judging by their history, Jarkko is due a win.

Too bad Stockholm isn't a 5 set final anymore, that alone would put the fear into Blake and he has to lose to a leftie eventually.

Nieminen's too weak. It's not that Blake is some wonder of the world, but far better than Nieminen.

Nieminen has got a good chance, he might be in the best shape out there. And a really cool head. If he repeats it in final, let's see. Before quaters I said he'd taken the crown. He's just one step from it - good luck!

Blake in 3! But Nieminen has a chance.

Jarkko knows how he must play to beat Blake, so it will be another tight match. But the problem in Bangkok was Jarkko changed his winning game in the end. Jarkko was up with a break in the 3rd set but became too passive, which is what he normally does when closing out tough matches. He did it today against Pim-Pim, too, but luckily for him, Joachim made easy mistakes plus Jarkko's serve kept working till the end.

It would be a huge thing for Jarkko to win the title in Sweden and against a top 10 player. If Jarkko has learned his lesson finally, he can overcome this tactical weakness (or mental block, if you prefer) against top players and win, otherwise Blake in 3.

How come you didn't use this headline for optional king Ljubocrap in Vienna?

Because he isn't one. :p 1 Slam SF, 1 Slam QF, 3 TMS finals, another 3 TMS QFs, and just the 2 optional titles..... compare with Blake's 1 Slam QF, 1 TMS final, 1 TMS QF and 4 optional titles.

Jarkko - the most underrated player in the top 20.

Very solid and consistant, should have beaten Blake in Bangkok, and has a good chance to make amends here.

From Jon Werthiem's Who's Up/Who's Down column today:

Ivan Ljubicic
King of the Lesser Events defends his honor (and every service game), racing to BA-CA title in Vienna, beating Fernando Gonzalez in the final.

"King of Lesser Events" bwahaha! :p

Hmm....would this be considered a "lesser event" had Roddick won it? :p
