how is seb's English?

noa

I'm wondering how good is his English?
I think not so good, right?
Sometimes it's funny to hear him because he's doing big mistakes or he's speaking in a french way, I mean he speaks a kind of "french english" (you see what I mean?). As a French, I can understand but sometimes I'm wondering if a stranger understands! so funny!
He's not so comfortable with the medias and I in English I think it's worse for him!
But I also think he's improved a lot. He's living in Florida, it probably helps him even if he's there only few times during the year.
I've heard his daughter speaks English better than him!

PS : how are you doing to put a picture on the left?

crystal
02-19-2004, 05:12 PM
really you've heard her daughter ???
When ?
Yeah I agree with you noa when you say that he speaks english with a french accent. That's funny !

I would like to put a picture too but I don't know why !!!!

 :hearts: I think his English is just great...
But I know I'm not able to judge his English in a purely objective way! Sure, he makes a lot of easy mistakes, and his accent is very French, but that's exactly why I so adore his English! The way he says 'serve' and 'second set' and 'good conditions'... :inlove:
I have never heard Lola speak, but I'm sure she must be a lot better at speaking English than her dad. She's a little girl and she lives in Florida, it must be a piece of cake for her to pick up the language! It's always easier to learn a foreign language if you're a child.
As for the pictures on the left - you mean the avatars, right, under your name? You go to the register and tick yes to edit your profile. Then you choose 'avatar' and in here you can either pick one of the custom made avatars, or you can upload your very own personal one from your computer. It also took me a long time to discover how to do it!
I hope you can understand my guidelines. ;)

The way he says 'baseLINE' is also very charming!

noa
02-19-2004, 05:44 PM
no I've never heard lola speaking, I didn't mean that sorry (I'm also doing mistakes, lol!).
Actually I saw it in an interview.

crystal
02-19-2004, 07:48 PM
yes I've already read it in an interview (je pense que c'était la même noa ! sur le site officiel de seb)
Seb said that his girl spoke in english better than him and that sometimes she mixed english and french, that was very funny to listen.

crystal

Aha, I like Seb's English........ that's so FRENCH!!!! He has very strong French accent (e.g. "be-bo" instead of "people")

But as a HK person, who's not a English native speaker, I can understand all the things he talked, coz he talks slow :) (maybe becoz I get use to speak english with people from different countries, and I get use to listen some wrong english!!! AND I SPEAK WORNG ENG. AS WELL!!! ) . But he doesn't say a lot when he was speaking in English, like, in all the interviews, he was always, "Yeah... No... yes yes yes..." or "Yeah... I like it... nice..." (classic sebbie expression ^_^|||) Maybe he's a shy person who doesn't express that much.

Or, non-native speakers sometimes may afraid to speak that much (esp in front of the native speakers ie the reporters) coz they are afraid of making mistakez (one of them is me)!!!

Anywayz I like to listen Seb speaking in English, that's totally different with the Seb seaking in French!!!

I absolutely like both Grosjeans, the French and the English versions! Getting all *dreamy* when remembering his pronounciation...

'Pretty' is also a favourite Seb word :) "I played pretty well today" "was pretty good"

esther
02-20-2004, 10:00 PM
i reckon his english is pretty good
although he tends to mumble and speak really softly and moves his head a LOT when hes talking LOL but yeah. he pronounces R's like W's like gwass and pwetty lol so cute

yes ,i agree with u ,wilma.
and the commonest word used by other players when seb is mentioned is "a gooooooood figure"
lol.....

ubrunjensen
02-21-2004, 12:12 PM
I've noticed he says 'you know' a lot - and yes, he mumbles, but that's okay. I like his soft voice. Hello again, Stella! Welcome back. What do you mean, 'gooood figure' - do the other players pay attention to his good looks and fit body??? I know I would if I met him again and again on the tour, but hey, I'm a girl - he he he!!! No, joking aside, I guess you just mean they rate him as a good player...

taremi
02-21-2004, 12:33 PM
Yup, Ulla, his voice is soft and I like it.

Marine
02-24-2004, 05:40 PM
I heart him only one time in english, I'm not able to judge, but I think he doesn't speak well for someone who live in Florida (I understand his english, because he speaks slowly, badly with a big accent...lol)

ubrunjensen
02-25-2004, 06:05 AM
Officially he lives in Florida, but he hardly spends any time there, I mean, he's always out on the tour and when he's home I think he stays with his family and doesn't mingle much with the locals! Or maybe the poor guy simply hasn't got flair for languages? Some people are just not very good at learning languages.

LOOL

I think foreign language is a national problem.in France... lol
But yes, in Florida he spends his time with his family , coach and other french players so it doesn't help him a lot...

I gladly volunteer to give him some English conversation lessons :)

esther
02-26-2004, 07:45 AM
i dunno i reckon his english is a lot better than some of the other players out there *cough arnaud cough* but i think you could have a conversation in english with him quite easily like i've never read an interview or anything where he's completely misunderstood something or needed a translator?

he really answered in french? i mean he speaks not that bad english. but you hear his french accent! so sweet :)

03-29-2004, 03:40 AM
For the French players:

As a native English speaking person I can tell you his English is probably second best to Santoro who has excellent English.

Seb's English is probably a bit more accented than Cedric Pioline but again both have pretty good English.

I would say Escude is then one notch below; he seems to understand most questions spoken to him and can reply but you can tell his English is not as good as his replies are much more basic than the others.

Clement probably has the least fluency in the language in the bunch.

you were talking about his daughter...
how old is she???
i just wondered because sébastien is only 25 himself...

i always liked grosjean but i'm rather a obsessed ferrero fan.
but i want to know more things about sébastien too.
what is like the best grosjean site going on at the moment?

Lizan

I thought his daughter is 8 years old but I'm not sure.. You can see a picture of her at the childhoodpicture tread..
Yeah Seb is almost 26 *sigh*, he's getting old guys..lol

Seb has a horrible officialsite: www.grosjeansebastien.com
okay go and take a look at it..

Carole, you could check out Kelly Chan's Grosjean website, called sebastienmania. I think it's very good as Kelly is a devoted fan! Unfortunately she's rather busy right now with her education and has very little time to update - still, there's a lot of info and great photo galleries. By the way, Kelly is also a registered member here.

Grosjean is horribly young to have kids and be married and all - but I guess a lot of sports people seem to need the calm security of a steady family life, to support them, and he's no exception. So he became a father first time around, shortly after his wedding, when he was only 20 (I think), and is already "an old married man". LOL

carole
04-02-2004, 04:44 PM
yes indeed he's very young to have kids and to be married and stuff
but i'm sure it makes him a happier man :D

You better face it, girls, you fancy old men! LOL
I'm the opposite, I seem to like young men - younger than me, anyway! But these days half the sports population in the world seems to be younger than me! What ever happened to nice, goodlooking athletes my age??? Maybe I'm watching all the wrong sports? Where's the golf channel???

OMG don't even think of golf, ugh. I can't even imagine shirtless golf practice rounds.

(Thinking of heaving again with that image in my head.)

I have an older man at home. Hence my affinity towards young tennis players! I wonder if they watch Discovery Channel at night, too. :)

esther
04-04-2004, 01:22 PM
LOL @ fancying old men, ulla!!
its really weird tho, because now tennis players are starting to be my age?! if that makes ANY sense...like i mean coz i'm young players have always been older than me...but now theres like younger players and soon i'll be older than them!!! that proably made no sense but its scary lol

Lizan

Oh hey sorry about the wrong information about his daughter.. I didn't know it for sure.. So learned sth new about him lol (well his daughter but okay..)

Yeah Esther you're right.. Guys like Nadal and Ancic (hottt lol), yeah they're our age. Arnauds getting 27 already? He looks soo much younger.

stephB
04-05-2004, 12:32 AM

michelleg
04-05-2004, 01:40 AM
Mario Ancic  likes french pedicures....don't think age matters to him, lol. I told him in Indian Wells that I was old enough to have been his nanny and he thought that was funny!

lol....... hard to imagine even esther is worried about getting old... wait till you're... umm.. my age :p

when you're young you fancy 'old men' and when you're older you fancy younger men.... it's only normal... guys and gals in their 20's are always the most popular with people of all ages lol...

think arnaud is quite 'normal' for a 26 y.o. ... except that he's a professional tennis player who travels the world so he really should be a bit more mature??

ps. i don't think seb's english is poor, but he does have a heavy accent so it makes it harder to understand.

michelleg

I love the French accent, its such a beautiful language...its not just the accent, but the syntax and composition of sentences that makes it so poetic!

Aussie accents rock, too! (ahhhh memories of Patrick Rafter...*sigh*)

Makes sense to me too Esther. It's not only tennis either. The other day I was freaking out because I was perving on some AFL players while I was at the footy before realising they were only about 21/22. I'm 25 now so suddenly everyone is getting younger and younger.

Is it still ok to look when you get older than the players (in any sport)? :P

michelleg
04-05-2004, 03:44 PM
NOW I feel old! I'm 10 years older than you, and YOU are worried about being "too old?"

Seriously, it has traditionally been acceptable for men to date women 20 years their junior, why is there such a quibble when a woman chooses to date a man 8-10 years her junior?

So I would say, "yes," it's perfectly fine to enjoy the sights, even if they are a wee bit younger! (although 21 is FAR too young for me...I prefer mine in their mid 20s  )

Via
04-06-2004, 12:31 AM
i won't date anyone 10 years my junior (i think those old men dating young women is odd, regardless of whatever the tradition) but *looking* is a different matter..... lol !!!!!!!

i do worry sometimes if arnaud will one day look too old for my liking (without me checking the mirror first, of course) i find my previous fav rios getting to look a bit too old and tired. i don't like watching someone age, lol....

michelleg
04-06-2004, 03:33 AM
*Confronts aging in the mirror every day* UGH.

Oh, I agree, Via, looking helps keep the mind and spirit from aging!

But my husband would differ with you, as I am eight years his junior! :)

Via
04-06-2004, 10:37 PM
8 years isn't much..... i suppose it's within 'acceptability'! (and to keep to our topic........ seb's wife is 8 years older than he, isn't she??)

04-10-2004, 01:33 PM
Oh, I've been away for a few days, and all of a sudden everyone is talking about age and age differences! I don't mind my heroes looking or acting young, I just don't like to discover that I'm old enough to be their nanny, auntie, or (heaven forbid) mother! When that day comes I will begin to knit, play golf, and only fancy my bf!

esther
04-11-2004, 08:35 AM
a bit slow but back to what we reckon are acceptable age differences...i wouldn't date neone whose in the year level below me so probably no one more than about 9 months younger!! and i'd reckon 2 years older would be my max. But thats probably coz i'm only 16 so my circumstances are different *shrugs*

doesnt mean i cant swoon over seb and arnaud tho, of COURSE but they act like they are my age neway LOL

Lizan
04-11-2004, 10:22 AM
Nah I wouldn't date anyone younger then me either.. Older then me?? Uhm my max would be like he can be 22, I'm 17 (and 8 months!) so yeah 5 years is okay with me. Guys that age are the cutest!

KellyluvsGrosjean
04-12-2004, 04:19 AM
Hey a, here to keep doing the off topic thing~ jejjeeee
yes sometimes when I read articles about the sports people... like most of them are 15-17 whatever, and they do womething great! Such as M. Chang won his RG when he was 17, and there's a guy in the Brit soccer league (sth like that), 17 only and he got a lot of scores in important matches! Michelle Kwan won loads of gold medals when she was 17... So mayne young kids are really good at sports AND NOW I M 18 BUT HAVE NEVER DONE STH GREAT! Aggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

Via
04-12-2004, 07:23 AM
hmmmm when i was a teenager (oh yes i was once!!! lol) i probably thought the same as you guys, no one much older and heaven forbid no one younger..... but as i got into 20s suddenly the net became larger.... still, i maintain what i said before, any more than 10 years gap is too much.

ubrunjensen
04-12-2004, 11:10 AM
He he he, I also used to say that I wouldn't be caught dead with a boy younger than myself! But that was way back in my teens, when I got a bit older, like 19-20, I didn't really care about any age difference either way. They could be 17 or 32, I just went for a cute smile and a minimum of intelligence! Today I don't see any difference between being 26 or 32, most people I know are younger than me, and quite a lot of them are married and have kids. I'm the odd one out, I still cling to my illusion of being free and independent, when I'm really just as settled down as they are, just without the kids and the marriage! LOL

ubrunjensen
04-12-2004, 11:16 AM
By the way, being silly here, I know - but if you could choose absolutely anyone, regardless of age and reality, dead or alive, who would you leave your partner for? I can only imagine two possibilities: either it would be James Stewart the actor, and he's dead - or it would be Figo, and he's married and in every way out of my league! Sorry, I know, you all hate Figo, but I've always liked dark men with big noses and heavy accents!

Lizan
04-12-2004, 04:38 PM
Don't watch any football, my brothers watch it for me.. I would go for Paul Leyden.. He's australian and not only his accent is soooo cute, but he's ssooooooooo hot. Most australians don't know him though.

I don't mind the whole 'for life' thing, I'm a romantic - and I really do believe that I will be with my bf for the rest of my life, he's perfect for me, even with faults and all! LOL But I still wouldn't want to marry him - and I still think a shortlived affair with Figo would be just...ma ha ha! At least I would then get the chance to tell him how much Real Madrid sucks at the moment!

what's the difference between 'for life' and 'for life with a certificate'??

actually i'm glad to hear stories of people finding a suitable life partner! it's just me i suppose. being single suits me much better.... i think i'm a better person this way. (rather than giving another person hell.....)

no esther i didn't always think that. but don't get influenced by me!
