:speakles:

Becker and Novak currently at 3-3 in the 3rd set, with the time approaching 3am in Tokyo

Seriously, the organisers have lost the plot. I understand they wanted to get matches done because of the rain and stuff but this is ridiculous.

Anyone think of a match that's gone on later than this? I remember a few US Open matches going late, but none after 2am

Phew! I thought I was "seeing things" for a while...
The organizers have gone :cuckoo: And now the winner is actually expected to show up ready and well-prepared for the QFs in like, 16 hrs?!

This is a shame, hopefully they do not have to do a press conference. After all, the reporters will have probably let anyway. I bet they will schedule Becker first tomorrow ;)

I went to a concert last night that started at 11:30pm. Maybe this is a trend.

That's better than making them play two matches in the same day.

http://www.atptennis.com/1/en/newsandscores/news/news4.aspBenjamin Becker and Jiri Novak took the court for the last match of the Day 4 schedule and Becker emerged a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(4) winner at 3.24 a.m after having saved one match point while serving at 5-6 in the third set. It is the latest finish to a match in ATP history.

Previously, the latest time a match finished was at 3.21 a.m. In that match at Philadelphia in 1990, Pete Sampras and Jim Courier lost a doubles match 6-4, 6-2 to Paul Chamberlin and Tim Wilkison.

Ouch, JMDP and Henman will start their match at 9am in center court. Followed by Schuettler vs Ancic. The winners of these matches had to wait after the other 3 QFs and plus a WTA match for their 2nd match of the day.

If I have a choice, I would rather be Becker that he has at least some rest before showing up on court tonight.

Geez, so that's why he didnt convert any of those two first mps at 5:4, 40:15. I hope you're satisfied now, Becker. Not only do ppl know you due to your name or your win against Agassi, now you are also known for the lastest ATP match ever finished. :D

Why? Had they not played those two night matches, they would probably have to play QF matches still on Saturday.

I don't know - playing two matches on the same day is not as bad as it sounds compared to playing at 3am. You have crowds to support you, you have more adrenaline and your sleep cycle is not disrupted.

Hmmm.. interesting debate.. Personally I would prefer to play a very late match, than play two matches in one day.

And I don't think the organizers are as stupid as we think. I have a feeling they asked the players involved (Novak/Becker/Niemenen/Monaco) and the players said they would prefer to have their 3rd round match completed no matter how late it was, instead of having them play their 3rd and 4th round match on the same day. (Of course, I'm just speculating here..)

safin and henman played til 2am in miami this year. but they were asked if they wanted to start the match or just play it the next day and they decided to play the match although it was already past midnight

Playing 2 matches on one day is much easier I would say. The players are used to it and it would have been fairer.
