What other sports would the top tennis players be good at?

01-03-2004, 01:14 AM
I dunno if this has been asked ... but i'm curious and it's still a few more days before the 2004 starts...so...

This is two questions....

1. What sports would he have played if he weren't a tennis player?

2. And what sports would you like him to play if he weren't playing tennis?

01-03-2004, 01:24 AM
With his amazing hand-eye coordination and returning ability, Andre would probably be great with a baseball bat.

Maybe Andre could halt the curse of the bambino! (not!) ;)

01-03-2004, 01:32 AM
hey nowwwwwwwwwww Q no messing with the Sox

I think it's safe to say that most tennis players would have been soccer players. And there are so many players who had to choose between soccer or tennis at a young age. Can't think of any right now

oh, yeah, some players would definitely have more time to surf! I love the surfer players

01-03-2004, 02:01 AM
Ferrero would be football. Davenport would be volleyball.

01-03-2004, 02:42 AM
Guga would be a surfer. Rainer would probably be more in his Tae Kwon Do!

01-03-2004, 06:27 AM
Jan-Michael would be a professional beach volleyball player. He has a sand pit court at his house.

01-03-2004, 06:49 AM
I think Marat would be a great football player (he really likes showing his skills on court too)

01-03-2004, 07:43 AM
Tim Henman would most likely be a football player, although he also loves to play golf (and quite good at it, too!).

01-03-2004, 07:49 AM
I'm not really sure but there was a video clip thingy on a site that i forgot but it had andy roddick playing basketball

01-03-2004, 09:16 AM
ummmm, football, for JC & Guille , altho Ferrero, plays a bit of golf, which i find boring, wonder y some tennis players play golf, eg. hewitt!

01-03-2004, 11:19 AM
David would be a rally car driver (or possibly a footballer), and Guille would definately be a footballer.

01-03-2004, 11:48 AM
Dominik Hrbaty would be a skier, he had to choose between that and tennis.
Gaston Gaudio would be a footballer.

01-03-2004, 11:49 AM
Marat wanted to play football. I'm sure he would've been very good...like that Miroslav Kl...somethinging tall guy in the German team.

01-03-2004, 11:57 AM
As has been said already, Marat would definetly be a football player, and a very good one. Thats the thing he wanted to do in fact as a kid and he loves it still.

like that Miroslav Kl...

Klose :) Yes, he is very great!

01-03-2004, 12:35 PM
Escudé hesitated a long time between footballer and tennisman, he was very good in both (his brother is profressional, he plays in Ajax amsterdam)

Grosjean would be a skier. He practiced this sport in competition because he lived in mountain.

01-03-2004, 01:21 PM
Guille would play football for River plate for sure, and Guga...yeah he'd be a surfer
Nadal would be a soccer player......

01-03-2004, 01:51 PM
I don't know if Guga would have picked surfing for a professional career. Maybe soccer. Gui would be a soccer player for sure if he could.

Hewitt -- Aussie Rules Football!

Norman -- Bandy!

I don't know what Andy would have liked to have played. He played basketball in school, but I'm sure he couldn't have a professional career in basketball. He follows football, but ditto for that.

01-03-2004, 01:53 PM
didn't marat play ice-hockey too?

01-03-2004, 03:46 PM
Pete Sampras : golfer !!

01-03-2004, 05:06 PM
i'd think Sampras would be good at pitching or qurterback

01-03-2004, 05:18 PM
didn't marat play ice-hockey too?

yep. There was a stadium near his home in Moscow when he was a kid:).

He liked it, but he still prefered soccer;)

Thomas Muster was in the Austrian junior football teams.

Haarhuis was one of the best players in the PSV Eindhoven youth team and was asked to sign a pro contract, but declined.

Other players who could have been professional footballers are Gaudio, Vicente, Paes and Ivanisevic

Lendl actually played a few golf events.
Enqvist is supposed to be quite good at ice hockey.

01-04-2004, 10:06 AM
Hrbaty would be a skier, he used to be better at skiing than tennis. Or he could be a cyclist. He is also an excellent golfer, taking out some pro am. Maybe he could be a marathon runner too!

By the way, it is Hrbaty's birthday today - Jan 4th.

01-04-2004, 10:08 AM
Or maybe Hrbaty could be an ice hockey player.

01-04-2004, 10:10 AM
Hewitt -- Aussie Rules Football!

yeh, i can c Hewitt kicking a goal for the crows, rite now!

01-04-2004, 03:10 PM
Guille would be a football (soccer) player. :) I'm just fine with that... I love soccer.

Norman -- Bandy!

Yeap, Magnus would have been a bandy player.

Guille: football player (from River Plate, maybe? je je ;) )

Nico: football player definitely.....I've seen him playing it, and sometimes I think that he'd be much better as a football player than a tennis one.

Ferriera represented his province in Rugby Union and Cricket as well in his junior days, and he did his military service unlike some other players.

01-05-2004, 07:27 AM
Roger once said if he is not playing tennis, he's probably a good footballer! A defender or attack, not quite sure!

Action Jackson
01-05-2004, 07:35 AM
I think he would have played libero/sweeper, I don't see Roger as a man-marking defender though he would be creative the ball.

So with the creativity and ability to read the game he would better at libero, though he could be a playmaker with two midfield hardmen around him.

I don't think Federer would be in the same class as Vicente, Haarhuis or Gaudio on the football field.

Coria playing for River Plate. I wonder if he would dive as much as Pippo Inzaghi?

Doris Loeffel
01-05-2004, 10:13 AM
Well Roger did play football when he was younger. He also had to choose and fortunately he went for tennis.

Michel Kratochvil played icehockey too and so did Georges Bastl.

01-05-2004, 01:58 PM
God bless Roger did choose tennis! Or we'll lose a tennis genius and also lots of fun to watch.

Coria playing for River Plate. I wonder if he would dive as much as Pippo Inzaghi?

Maybe....he would be agile at football too. I imagine him in the category (due the height, speed, etc.) of Saviola or Barros Schelotto. :)

Action Jackson
01-06-2004, 12:37 AM
How much of a diver would Coria be? Imagine a guy like Ayala marking him, I think he would be trying to get penalties all the time. At the same time I think he could be quite a good footballer.

01-06-2004, 01:20 AM
Yeah.. I think Rogi will be a good libero, not a play maker. His height and speed plus his neat and flawless game in addition to his flair are essential to make a good defender.

Thank God he chose tennis over football becoz tennis would be nothing wihout Roger Federer. btw, I've already have Sandro Nesta as my one and only football idol. Good choice Rogi!

I don't agree tennis would be nothing without Federer, but he definitely brings his own magic to the game, as do many other players contribute different things to make it interesting.

Roger usually goes and watches FC Basel at St. Jakob when he gets the chance, and their fans are the most passionate in Switzerland, that's why when there are any big national team matches they are played in Basle.

Rosset has very good football skills, though he would have to play forward. I am not sure too many people would beat him for headers.

01-06-2004, 03:50 AM
personally tennis would be pretty boring if Federer was not playing but that can be said of any player, they all bring something to the game

01-06-2004, 09:38 AM
yeh, ur rite there WyverN! how else would i have been a tennis fan!

Zabaleta could have played rugby union like his father did.

01-07-2004, 10:13 AM
I actually think there is a similar skill set needed between golf and tennis so a number of players could have been great golfers

Hey GeorgeWHitler: where are u from? Argentina?

01-07-2004, 11:28 PM
Iit is not only the Federers who make tennis interesting, the Karsten Braachs and Gianluca Pozzis also make tennis interesting.

01-07-2004, 11:42 PM
Football for Ferrero, cos he used to play when he was younger... he could also be driving cars or playing golf.

01-08-2004, 12:02 AM
Iit is not only the Federers who make tennis interesting, the Karsten Braachs and Gianluca Pozzis also make tennis interesting.

but it's Rogi who brought back my interest to watch tennis again so I have to thank him for the choice he made!

There are other ones as well though many of the classic players have retired like the most handsome German ever Bernd Karbacher.

01-08-2004, 01:28 AM
well...it seems that many players are interested in soccer too...sort of like having only two choices for them to pick in life...soccer or tennis...

it's funny cos i feel the two sports is quite different ...it's funny also cos i like, enjoy and watch both sports too....

01-08-2004, 05:12 PM
But it's just that the most part of the players who got to decide between soccer or tennis, come from countries where soccer is the most popular sport.

10-04-2006, 01:28 PM
I got thinking about this when I remembered a comment Brad Gilbert made about Marat Safin during the 2004 Australian Open. Brad said that Marat has the right build to be successful in American football. This got me thinking: what other sports might Federer, Nadal, Blake, Roddick, etc. be good at.

Any ideas?

Jose Acasuso a basketballer which he gave up at 12 to dedicate himself to tennis.

Karlovic well basketball in theory.

10-04-2006, 02:20 PM
Roddick would prolly be a quarterback playing American football.

Radek Stepanek
10-04-2006, 02:41 PM
Football, or soccer as many American chums call it. Most of them were going to be footballers before they turned to tennis, especially Nadal. His uncle even played for Barcelona, and Madrid.

10-04-2006, 04:56 PM
they are often good at golf, if you can call it a sport :p

10-04-2006, 04:59 PM
Maradona said Acasuso plays football (soccer) well. Most of the Argentines play football but not all of them do it well.
I think Gaudio played rugby when he was a teenager.
Nadal also play football well, and yes, there are a lot of players that practise golf.

10-04-2006, 04:59 PM
I always thought Agassi could be an amazing batter in baseball with his ability to see the ball. (Don't know how he'd be in the field).

Berdych, I think could do well in ice hockey.

10-04-2006, 05:16 PM
Mc Enroe at hip-hop diss ... if it's a sport

10-04-2006, 08:07 PM
Karlovic could play basketball. :D

10-04-2006, 08:16 PM
Karlovic could play basketball. :D

Don't you think Ollie has a better build for basketball?

El Legenda
10-04-2006, 08:30 PM
Safin cant play american football...what position will he play? he is tall but SLOW by football standards and unless he plans to put on 30-40lbs there is no position for him on the football field :) not even QB..

he too tall for running back
slow for WR
small for any Defense position
tall for a CB or SS or FS
small for Offensive line

maybe TE...if he would put on 30-40lbs :)

10-04-2006, 09:36 PM
Feli - synchronized swimming :D

10-04-2006, 09:37 PM
