Well as David is out injured for the next couple of weeks, I thought we should start looking forward to the tournament where he hopes to make his return - in Dubai. It has an excellent field including Roger Federer, Tim Henman and Mark Phillippoussis, and I found an article today that talks a little about David and Guille Coria coming to play in the tournament.

Dubai set to welcome Argentines
By A Correspondent

16 February 2004

DUBAI - The Dubai Duty Free Men's Open is set to welcome two of the most glittering stars to have emerged out of South America for a decade.

World No 4 Guillermo Coria and World No 8 David Nalbandian are both from Argentina and have taken the tennis world by storm over the past two years by surging into the world top 10. The 22 year-olds both qualified for the season ending Masters Cup and between them earned almost $4 million from a fruitful season.

"South America is emerging as a real hot bed for up and coming
players and we are delighted that Dubai will be welcoming the two
leading players from the continent," said Colm McLoughlin, Managing Director of Dubai Duty Free.

Coria has become a sporting icon in his native country and enjoyed a superb 2003 by picking up five titles and reaching the finals in two further tournaments. The clay-court specialist will be making his first appearance on the hard courts of Dubai, where he is likely to start as No 2 seed behind the world's top player Roger Federer.

Nalbandian burst onto the scene in 2002 when he reached the Wimbledon final, eventually losing to Lleyton Hewitt, but it was a season that proved his versatility when he reached the finals on three different surfaces.

Despite battling injury throughout 2003, the Argentinean managed to break into the world top 10 along with Coria and finished the season just four places below his countryman in eighth.

The Dubai Duty Free Men's Open, from March 1-7, will follow the Dubai Duty Free Women's Open, which kicks off the Championships fortnight from February 23-28.

Oh no, injured again? Poor David is really prone to injuries, isn't he? Hopefully it'll be a fast recovery for him.

Good Luck in Dubai! :bounce:

mmmm...I don't think the draw is out yet, it's still too early. I think the tourny starts on March 1st, and usually we have to wait till 2 days before it starts. But if anyone has any info about this (even if David is confirmed to play!) please, post it here!

Haven't heard anything yet - as you say - far too early. I guess we should just keep our fingers crossed and stick to our "no news is good news" philosophy about the injury. I'm sure you'll probably hear any information first Jazz_Girl through the Argentine Press - so we're relying on you :)

*Ljubica*
02-23-2004, 08:17 PM
Well even though we do get live coverage, it will be on during the day when I'm at work, so I'll be stuck with the live scoring too, and I'll just have to set the VCR to watch when I get home! I hate doing that though, because unless it happens to be the first match of the day, you're never quite sure if you've set it for the correct time - I'm always losing the end of matches I want because the tape runs out

It was at a tennis game site, someone quoted him as saying last week in BA: "My idea is to be fully recovered for Miami and in the meantime I am working in tonification and physical sessions".

No official source, that's why I asked here. It did make me wonder, because I'd read what you guys were discussing and I thought he'd be back next week. I guess we have to wait until the Dubai draw comes out then to be really sure.

I'd be surprised if he missed IW though.

Ok, this is what I found. David said this on Feb 16th, when he went to the Bs As tournament:

I highly doubt that, we would have heard something by now, and even Coria's considering playing in doubles with him.
Anyway, the draw should be out this week-end, so we'll know if he plays very soon.

Ok, this is what I think: That quote from David about playing in Miami and not in Dubai was made in the same day as the one I posted. He was sure he was gonna be ready for Miami, but not so sure about Dubai. But if Coria said that it's possible they'll play in doubles together(and I read that today again from another respecable newspaper)that means he ready...As I said before, all we can do is wait till the draw is out, because there's nothing official yet.

Dubai is a very good tournament and has a lot of tough players, that is why Roddick is hiding, so it won't be very easy for him to win it and his old friend Safin is there as well.

Yes, I remember the US Open match, and also the Cincinnatti one that David lost in the final set  I don't think any of us are over-confident on this one, especially as this is David's first match after injury, but I'm sure he won't under-estimate Jarkko. I think one of the best things about David is that he always respects his opponents whoever they are and never under-estimates them.

Yes Fedex - Safin in the 1st round is a nightmare for anyone - your poor Roger certainly gets his fair share of bad draws  I agree that David and Roger would be a great semi- we'll all be keeping our fingers crossed for that one - Tim won't dare to mess it up

I think so too...but before that : Safin and Tim for Rogi :scared:

Good luck to David in Dubai, my another favourite in this tournament.

Toothless Tiger is gone and David better be aware and ready play from the start against Nieminen, or he will have an early flight to IW, which I don't want to see.

Yeah, I don't want that to happen. A lot of great players are gone: Henman, Schuettler(sp?), Philippoussis, and Safin or Federer will be gone too...I hope David doesn't join them! I'm so nervous!!!

I got up this morning to see that David lost to Jarrko, 3-6 3-6  . I'm hoping that it was more to how well Jarrko played just to make myself feel better.

And with Guille out today I'm going to have to go look at the draw to see if I even have a slight favorite left.

I have very good coverage of this tournament, but did not have time to watch today. Sorry!!!!!

I hope to get him on the highlight show.

I tought that his match against Nieminen will be hard, even so I can't believe it that he's lost so easily...

Another sad new for me after Guille's loss

I couldn't watch the match, so I can't do any comment about it. I guess Jarkko was just better today :o

David!!! :( Oh well, the Draw is wide open for Roger, so he BETTER win this thing, with David, and Coria out. I hope he is better prepared for those 2 TMS Series coming up!

Jarkko should never be underestimated and it was a tough match for him, David could have easily drawn a UAE qualifer but hey it's one match and it's not like he lost to a jabroni.

Now it's time for David to focus on Indian Wells.

Very sadly, it seems like David was still suffering quite badly from his ankle injury during yesterday's match  This is what he said afterwards:-

Nalbandian: "I am recovering from my ankle injury and don't feel so good yet. I tried everything I could but it wasn't enough today. I couldn't move so well today which is a big problem for my game. He played good today too."

I do hope this is not too serious and he recovers fully for Indian Wells and Miami where so many points are at stake.

So how many points does David need to defend in IW and Miami? I mean there is no point in playing, if he doesn't feel he can't move well, he doesn't have the movement then he is in huge trouble.

You never know he might need more time off. I hope not, but that might be the best thing for him.
