Ah well, a pity for Dupuis, but what can you say other than go go Super Mario, in the words of some of the Croatian posters on here! Gives hope to all the Croatian journeymen out there, considering that Ljubicic won his first title a couple of years ago. Karlovic and Krajan's time is yet to come...

croat123
02-15-2004, 12:51 PM

Sjengster

Sjengster

I hate it when there's confusion over the result of a match, it happened last year when people were reliably informed on here that Sluiter had beaten Federer in the Marseille quarters only to be told about two hours later that it was the other way round. In retrospect, that result was what really turned Federer's year into a good one...

Oui, oui Dupuis! Ajmo Ancic! Can't say I mind too much, personally.

croat123
02-15-2004, 01:00 PM

It would be quite ironic if Dupuis somehow still ended up winning this in the third, although after blowing such a huge chance you wouldn't think it too likely. I assume he had matchpoints in the tiebreak?

he only had 8 match points. he was up 6-2 and though he won a point, but it was overruled.

he better not win. i don't think mario could recover if he loses this match.

Sjengster
02-15-2004, 01:16 PM
Oh right, just the 8 chances for a first ever title, and one of them lost through a crucial overrule. I thought it might have been something important.

Last year he played Bogdanovic in Queens, got up 6-2 in the final set breaker then choked hugely, dumped a simple overhead into the net at 6-4 and ended up saving a couple of matchpoints before winning 11-9 (Bogdanovic missed exactly the same shot to give him the win, ironically).

Sjengster

Sjengster
02-15-2004, 01:36 PM
Scotso, I see from your changed signature that you've jumped aboard the Federer Express. Nothing to do with the recency effect of him winning the last Grand Slam, if you don't mind me asking?

Ah, but he's such an entertaining clown! "Haaaaaaayyyyy"... I can't really convey his flamboyant grunt in onomatoepic form, but it's something like that. And I was so looking forward to chanting "Oui, oui Dupuis" as well... if you check a couple of pages back, a post just after I thought Dupuis had won has been, ahem, altered to change some of the names and nationalities. ;)

Really? Can't say I noticed it in the last few months of last year, although I admit I had no particular reason to scrutinise yours or anyone else's signature. Good to cover all your options with regard to the top players, apart from the Gruesome Twosome from the US, of course.

Sjengster
02-15-2004, 01:48 PM
It's dramatic stuff, but it does highlight something of a Croatian deficiency in the returning department - how many breakpoints has Ancic had in the whole match?

I bet he breaks now that I said that.

Springy
02-15-2004, 01:48 PM
go Mario

Scotso
02-15-2004, 01:49 PM
6-6

Sjengster
02-15-2004, 01:50 PM
Ah well, I almost got it right. I will lay good odds on the second tiebreak being much easier than the first, whoever wins it (rather like Kuerten's two tiebreaks against Philippoussis in Paris: 13-11 and 7-1, respectively).

poundcatt
02-15-2004, 01:50 PM

I wonder if the only time Dupuis opened his eyes during the whole tournament was after he won the match? He usually just swings and he managed to win the tournament.

The Ancic tiebreak disease has caught up with him again.

WyveN
02-15-2004, 01:59 PM
I think Ancic feels like his just been castrated by Dupuis :(

Ha, so Dupuis still almost choked away a 6-3 tiebreak lead... I'm happy about this result. Croat said that the loser of this match would probably never recover, but Ancic easily has another ten years to do it whereas Dupuis has about two at most. Vive les journeymen francais!

I've had a soft spot for Dupuis since the time Dupuis invited Illie to meet him under the stands during a match where Ille was being his onery belligerent self.

Don't worry croat we are all racists on this board according to i love paradorn

Also Ancic was playing futures and challenger events up to March 2002. Yes, he played Davis Cup during that time, but he does time and you are being a bit harsh expecting to him to win, as long as he continues to improve he will be fine, though he shouldn't have lost to Dupuis.
