Jarkko has a busy schedule planned for the last two months of the tennis season. The first two weeks Jarkko travels in Asia playing in Bangkok and Tokyo; two tournaments of which Jarkko has a good record from the past few years. Then it's back to Europe with Stockholm, Madrid, St. Petersburg and Paris on his schedule. All of these tourneys are played indoors, except Tokyo, which is on a outdoor hardcourt.

The draw for Bangkok is out, which was fairly kind to Jarkko:

5-NIEMINEN, Jarkko FIN vs MASSA, Edgardo ARG
DANCEVIC, Frank CAN vs Q
MELLO, Ricardo BRA vs WASKE, Alexander GER
WC-CILIC, Marin CRO vs 3-BLAKE, James USA

Jarkko probably has a Wednesday start here, because of the Davis Cup matches and long travel he's had to make to get there. QF would be the minimum goal for Jarkko, if he meets Blake there, it will be a good test of his current level of play.

I suppose it would be a straight sets victory for Jarkko. Your favourite challenger reporter (myself, to remove doubts :p) spent some time with Massa last week hmm and I need to admit he's in a good shape, his dropshots are on fire, lift is safe and he knows when to play a faster ball. But he isn't the world's greatest at the net, even if he gets the wrong impression on that point and appears there more frequently than he ever should. With Jarkko's passing shot things should go well. Anyway, he played on claycourts and had a exhausting travel from Poland (plane on Sunday) to Thailand. I don't know if he's going there for women or not  but my match preview is a Jarkko's victory :rocker2:

Jarkko d Massa 6-7(6) 6-3 6-2

It was a good comeback from Jarkko and he was quite happy with his level of play today. Massa played great in the first set, but Jarkko was able to step it up in the second and third set. His play was getting better all the time and that's a good sign for tomorrow. :)

Gah, Jarkko's semi-dismal form continues as he struggles past Dancevic 2-6 7-6 6-4. The positive thing is that these days his basic level is high and he has enough guts to get past a mediocre opponent. Besides, the match didn't last long so he should have some fire left in him to face Blake next. I would be most surprised if he actually wins, though.

Just gotta love the way Jarkko crawls out of these matches. He's kind of back to his (good old) struggling self after having the period of great confidence and consistency earlier this season. ;)

Great for him to have a chance of playing against James again. Hopefully he's able to raise his level, but indoors against Blake is going to be really tough.

Too bad Jarkko lost today  He did play a great tennis, but James was 'lucky' :p

The day he lost his doubles match, I was there to watch as well. After the match I asked him for a picture when he was about to leave the court. He was SUPER nice! He stopped and said, "Sure, why not?!" and he gave me a big smile too :inlove:

And today, during Marat's match... I went out of the stadium and OMG!! I bumped into Jarkko  He was on his way to the ATP office or sth. I asked him for a picture 'again' Jarkko 'again' was very nice. He always smiles when taking a picture with his fans! I'm SO impressed!

I wish him luck for the rest of the year and he said thanks! :)

Sure. Besides, it's outdoors, so the Arthurs lefty serve should not even cause as much trouble as it would indoors. In a way, could be actually more straightforward a match against the Aussie, even if the numbers might be tighter. But let's wait for tomorrow. :)

In an interview for the Finnish press, Jarkko said it was a close match but he never felt he could actually lose it. At 1-5 in the 2nd set, Burgsmüller had nothing to lose and started to play incredibly well. But Jarkko said he kept calm and was able to play his own game in the deciding moments of the match. He feels pretty proud of the way he played at the end.

Overall Jarkko thinks the quick courts in Tokyo suit his game well.

A good confidence-building win Jarkko! :yeah:

Monaco will be another difficult opponent but likely to self-destruct the way Burgsmüller did if the match goes tight. ;)

In the other pic you posted I saw Jarkko wearing a black support around his ankle, but there it was on the left ankle while in the pic above they are nursing the right leg. Maybe it wasn't an ankle injury but just a blister or something? Anyway, good to hear he had no trouble running afterwards. ;)

EDIT: Looking at the pic again, it is indeed the ankle as you reported. The trainer is putting some white tape around it for support. Hopefully his all fit though!

Seneca
10-14-2006, 04:52 PM
Hell yeah, this is the Jarkko from the first half of this year. Joachim Johansson has proved himself to be the same indoor monster as he was before injury but Jarkko had the mental fortitude and discipline to come through to the final.

The match was decided on a couple of points: in the first set, Jarkko dug himself out of a 0-40 hole in his 2nd serve game and then made a huge comeback from 1-6 down to a 10-8 victory in the tiebreak. From 1-6 to 7-6 he made 4 aces in his own serve (the last one was actually out, though) and a great bh passing shot winner on the run at 4-6. Johansson was quite furious about the last ace that was wrongfully ruled in and lost his concentration and eventually the first set.

Second set had no break points and the tiebreak was up for grabs for both players at some point. After an ill-advised foray to the net, Jarkko was a set point down with Pim-Pim serving and that was the end of the set.

Jarkko had a lead on Johansson's serve only once in the whole match and that was in the 4th game of the last set. After some sleepwalked points by both the game was tied at deuce and then Jarkko hit a backhand pass winner from full speed at Pim-Pim's Serve/volley combination followed by a great deflected reflex shot from half court after Johansson's hit his easy putaway forehand straight at Jarkko's general direction. Break.

In his last two service games Jarkko did what he too often does when leading: kept his game too passive and just waited for errors from PimPim's backhand side. This time it worked but his opponent had some serious looks at Jarkko's last serves and I think Jarkko got a bit lucky in the end.

Nevertheless, that was one of the best matches I've seen Jarkko play and especially his serving was phenomenal. He had 15 aces and most of them were almost Federer-esque in their timing: Always there to get him out of a tight spot.

With the game Jarkko showed today, Blake is very much beatable tomorrow.

Nathaliia
10-14-2006, 05:03 PM
I agree on Blake being beatable. Jarkko seemed to have the most potential during the week, though I expected the final versus Soderling.

Thanks Seneca for the amazing match report! I saw it exactly the same. Jarkko played really well throughout the match and I was so happy to see him focused and positive all the time, no lapses in his game this time. I also agree about the tendency to become too passive when closing out the matches -- it normally works against lower-ranked players but it seriously hampers Jarkko's chances to beat the top players.

Against Blake it's going to be extremely difficult. I'd given Jarkko better chances against James in Bangkok where he came close, but this time the surface is a bit quicker and the bounce lower, I think, which suits Blake's game perfectly. If Jarkko can carry the same mental approach to the court tomorrow as he did today, he's very tough to beat, though. :yeah:

Anyways, a great week for Jarkko... and hey, that semifinal against Pim-Pim was an instant classic! :worship:

Jarkko's foot has healed very quickly and he is ready to roll in his last scheduled tournament of 2006, the Paris Masters. Here's the draw:

[1]FEDERER, Roger SUI vs BYE
JOHANSSON, Thomas SWE vs Q
SIMON, Gilles FRA vs Q
BYE vs [14]NIEMINEN, Jarkko FIN

Simon or Bracciali in the second round is a very winnable match for Jarkko. Federer might pull out of here after reaching the Basel final and winning the Madrid before it, if he doesn't, Jarkko will have a good opportunity to take his first win against Roger (let's be optimistic :D ). Jarkko could use a good run here to clinch a spot in the Top 15 of the year-end rankings.

JOHANSSON, Thomas SWE vs [Q]SPADEA, Vincent USA
SIMON, Gilles FRA vs [Q]BRACCIALI, Daniele ITA
BYE vs [14]NIEMINEN, Jarkko FIN

Now when Federer is out, Jarkko's draw just can't get any better. :D If Jarkko is on form, a SF is a realistic goal for him. Bracciali is the first opponent...

Jarkko lost 7-6(4) 6-7(4) 4-6. :(

Looked like Jarkko was the better player for 2 sets but couldn't quite finish it off. In the third, the 1st serve deserted him and Robredo took full advantage of the weak 2nd serves. That really killed Jarkko's spirit.

el güero

Jarkko very disappointed after the loss:

"I had so many chances but didn't take advantage of them", said Nieminen for the Finnish YLE. "I should've won the match."

"Robredo played well at times, but more often it was the case of me playing badly."

"Still the match was of high quality and it's better to end the season playing well than losing easily."

Jarkko also wrapped up the season:

"All in all, it has been clearly the best season for me."

"Next year I'm going to take care of these sorts of matches. That will hopefully get me to the top 10."

Grosjean is at home and it will be a huge task for Jarkko to defeat him in his first match since the AO. Jarkko needs to be ready from the first point on, this will be a good test of his current level. :)

It looked very good. :) The guys were hungry and fired up for every point, Jarkko always took a small sprint to receive the next point.

The serve was as usual, the first one is good and the second one is loopy. Jarkko was at times a bit too eager, but he looked fit and ready for tomorrow. It will be very difficult against Grosjean, it's not the same as doubles when you have a partner to help you in hard times. Jarkko can win, but he needs to serve well and be aggressive enough with his returns. The crowd is a factor too, Seb is at home.

Jarkko confirmed for Auckland :)

http://www.heinekenopen.co.nz/4/news/08_nieminen.asp

Former Champ Confirmed as Seventh Top 30 Player for 2008 Heineken Open

Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen has been confirmed as the seventh top-30 ranked player to have entered the 2008 Heineken Open featuring the Sovereign singles and doubles.

Ranked at 27th in the world the 26-year-old won the Heineken Open title in 2006 having played superb tennis all week.

He was down and out in the semifinals against Olivier Rochus but won in three dramatic sets and then accounted for Mario Ancic in straight sets in the final.

The Auckland win put tennis on the map in his nation and gave the sport a major boost.

The title victory was a welcome relief for Nieminen after being a beaten finalist on five previous occasions, (Stockholm 2001 and 2006, Estoril and Mallorca 2002 and Munich 2003).

He came close to winning title number two with a quality performance at Basel late in 2007 with victories over Robby Ginepri, Guillermo Canas and Marcos Baghdatis before falling to Roger Federer.

The year also saw him feature as semifinalist twice – Halle on grass and the indoor hard courts at Marseille.

At Mumbai and Stockholm he was a singles quarter-finalist while he won the doubles title at Mumbai with Robert Lindstedt.

The tall left-hander reached a career-high ranking of 13 in July 2006 and has been a Grand Slam quarter-finalist on two occasions. The first being at the US Open in 2005 and the following year at Wimbledon.

“Jarkko has been a great supporter of our tournament and of course being a past champion it will be a pleasure to welcome him back to the Heineken Open this coming January,” says tournament director Graham Pearce.

He is married to badminton playing wife and fellow Olympian, Anu Weckstrom.

Other players confirmed for the Heineken Open are Spaniard David Ferrer (ranked at No5), No15 Guillermo Canas(Argentina), 20th ranked Juan Ignacio Chela(Argentina), Juan Monaco(Argentina) No23, Juan Carlos Ferrero(Spain) at No24 and another Spaniard, Nicolas Almagro at 28. Former finalist Mario Ancic(Croatia) is ranked outside the top-50.

The Heineken Open featuring the Sovereign singles and doubles will be held at the ASB Tennis Centre, January 7 – 12, 2008 with the first two days of qualifying January 5 – 6, 2008 at the Albany Tennis Park, Oteha Valley Road, Albany starting at 10am each day.

The 2008 tournament will feature live scoring as well as live streaming of play and audio podcasts.

Fairly easy for Jarkko today. He had a cheer squad of about 5 or 6 people. I was torn whether or not Klec had to justify beating Oli (but really, doing me a favour and preventing my 2 guys playing each other), or Jarkko because of the crappy doubles performance. The heat was ridiculous. It also seemed like whenever it got to deuce, Robert would be the one to return serve. Jarkko wasn't having a lot of luck.

first win of 2008 :yeah: now against Dancevic in the 2nd round on Thursday

WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID

Nieminen: "It is great to start the year with a win. You never know what to expect in the first tournament and first match. My game gets better when I play more matches. If the weather holds like this, then players will be leaving Australia very tired, but this is good preparation for Melbourne. You have to be careful not to practice too much as the matches take a lot out of you. All the players seem to have prepared well at home, as everyone know it is hot here. That is why I start competing in Adelaide, because it is hot, as it really prepares you for Melbourne."

[On new court surface adopted by Tennis Australia:] "I think the new court surface is better as it allows you to play serve and volley and from the baseline. It is easier to move than on last year's surface. When it was hot like this last year the surface got sticky and caused player injuries, such as twisted ankles - including me."

[Compulsary Army training during off-season:] "Immediately after [ATP Masters Series] Paris, I started my military service. Every man in Finland aged 18 and over needs to undertake training before they turn 29. You have to complete six or 11 months of training. I had a special schedule and was there for six weeks. So it was basically my holiday. After three weeks I started my tennis training and they allowed me to practice like normal. Having been at the training a couple of days, it was difficult as I did not know the rules. The other guys had started five weeks earlier, so it took a little time to get used to it. I did not think about tennis at all. We spent one week in a forest, living in a tent and experiencing the same things they did: shooting with different guns etc. I will have completed my training by March."

"It was an easier match than I expected," said Nieminen. "Frank has played very well here, so I was expecting this match to be tougher than it was.

"I got an early break in the second [set] and I think his game went a little bit down. I started to play more relaxed and felt much better today than in the first round. I have gotten used to the heat and court surface and when I get more and more matches my game will only get better."
