That was an upset and I will have to watch these matches on replay.

Time for Misha to make this 2-0. Safin was never losing to Roddick on a claycourt.

Safin has 11 wins and 3 loses to top-10 players this year, i think. All his other loses were from non-top-10 players. His confidence is a really weird thing. I think it'll rise only when he starts beating top-50 guys.

Quite surprising Marat finished it in straights. He usually has the idea that when he wins the first two sets, the opponent should simply get up and concede.

Good to see he survived the brain cramps this time. Nice job, Marat.

Safin's state of mental constipation in the third set was beyond normal. Frankly, it just goes to show how clueless Roddick really is when it comes down to "sand". He blew so many chances, most notably leading 5-2 in the TB. Nevertheless, I didn't expect much from him, and Team Russia must be beaming with confidence at the moment. The Bryans must win tomorrow, but the task is just awfully difficult for them at the moment. They need a miracle.

This tie would have been SO much fun on a quick indoor surface or even a hardcourt. Clay always kills any exitement when the USA is involved. This will always be a problem and we only have one thing to blame : the USTA. They need to get their kids playing on BOTH hardcourts and clay. Roddick and Blake can try as hard as they can to improve their claycourt abilities, but without all that practice while they were young they'll never make significant improvements in order to win the Davis Cup. It's a shame, though, as the USA has one of the best teams out there but clay always hurts them and its' their own country's fault for that! The comradery and closeness that the BRyans, Roddick and Blake share isn't seen from any other team out there and it's a shame that this team might not even hoist a single DC trophy in their entire careers. They really do deserve it, but who knows maybe, just maybe one year they'll play all matches on surfaces other than clay.

If they deserve it then they need step it up and play well on clay too. The USA is lucky they have a full time doubles team which is basically a guaranteed point. So neither Roddick nor Blake have to win three rubbers to win the tie.

Marat played fantastic in the first 2 sets! He has talent oozing out of him! He is such a GREAT player!! :worship:

Having watched this match I canít believe that Roddick beat him the last 3 times they met.

Does anyone remember where those matches were played?

I still donít know how Roddick managed to become #1. His game is so one dimensional. And his return of service game is terrible and always has been.
All he has is a big serve and forehand. Although he did make a few impressive shots during the match but Marat had so many more and his return of serve is excellent!

Such a pleasure to watch Safin play up to his potential! Keep it going!! :) :bounce:

All of their previous matches were played on hc.

I'm both huge fans of both guys so this was a tough match for me to pick a fave. But in defense of Roddick, he might not be a shotmaker, but he uses his strengths to his advantage. He's not comfortable with clay, everyone knows that, even he has acknowledged it. Safin was the better player in this match, period.

Your comment on how Roddick became #1 does not have any ground and does not have any connection with this match whatsoever. You may have your opinions about it, but it would be best if you keep them to yourself. :p
