Safin opens against Roddick in Moscow

US Open Finalist Andy Roddick will take on Marat Safin the opening rubber at the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group Semifinal in Moscow on Friday. Mikhail Youzhny will take the No. 1 position for Russia and will face USA's James Blake in the second rubber at the Olympic Stadium.

The draw is as follows:

Marat Safin (RUS) v Andy Roddick (USA)
Mikhail Youzhny (RUS) v James Blake (USA)
Dmitry Tursunov/Mikhail Youzhny (RUS) v Bob Bryan/Mike Bryan (USA)
Mikhail Youzhny (RUS) v Andy Roddick (USA)
Marat Safin (RUS) v James Blake (USA)

What an opener! Most anticipated match-up! Let's go Marat! :bigclap:

No Davydenko. Must be tired...sucked in practice?

Hmmm...the draw worked out the worst way for the Americans really. Their best chance of 1-1 was with Roddick v Youzhny and Blake v Safin.

Now the chances are they will be 0/2 after day 1...although Roddick v Safin is pretty much 50/50

If it isn't injury related, I'm guessing that Davydenko wasn't feeling confident about playing two players that dominate him.

Youzhny has come off a great result, and doesn't have a horrible h2h against the US team. He is most probably the better pick.

Hmm...Interesting. No Davydenko...(he didnt really seem to care anyway)...
Just going with the players now America should win, but it's clay...This will start to get pretty interesting :)

But how good is Youzhny on clay? Hmm...I wonder.

I think the reason Davydenko isn't playing is because he hasn't won against either Blake or Roddick. His head-to-head against Blake is 0-4, and his head-to-head against Roddick is also 0-4.

I think Tarpischev made a good call here. If Youzhny is tired after playing the Friday singles and doubles, he could easily replace him with Davydenko.

davydenko is 0:4 against blake!
all of these matches were played on hard courts, but that is probably the reason why youzhny is the no1?
he is also 0:4 against Arod so we will see who will play on sunday?

in DC the h2h isnt so important imo, last year before the final hrbaty was 0:5 against ljubo but he won in the end

bellascarlett

wow didn't know Davydenko had such terrible H2Hs against Blake and Roddick. All his matches against Blake were on hard though. Roddick has a win over him on clay but that was back in 2003 and in a final. Things have changed. But it's probably a mixture of things imo...fatigue...change of surface...the performance of the other Russians in practice...

come on Pat and the boys!

Roddick can beat Safin- remember clay is not either player's best surface. His record against the other players is very good, and he can still take his power game to slow clay and outhit them.

Blake though I don't see him winning two matches, certainly Safin is a guarantee against him.

I think the two teams should do everything they can to put aside lingering Cold War animosities by having Blake, Roddick, Safin and Tursunov all make love on the court!!! :hearts:

I was surprised to see Davydenko absented since the surface was supposedly picked for him. It's like choosing grass for USA against Chile and not having Roddick play. But given all the factors noted here, head to heads, confidence, Davydenko showing signs of too much tennis, probably better to rely on Marat to keep his head, lol. I think it will be close, all around, and exciting tie, for sure...And Davydenko can as said still play on Sunday, if he sees something in earlier matches that make him confident...

I understand why he picked Youzhny. Can't argue with results:

Monte carlo: lost first round

Munich: lost first round

Rome: lost second round

Hamburg: lost first round

French Open: lost second round BUT a very impressive victory over Sasa Tuksar in 4 sets

good analysis :yeah:, couldn't have said it better myself. I think it's going to be closer than most people seem to think, and Marat's never one to deal with pressure well. We shall see...I don't think I've been this excited about davis cup before .

My guess is that coach Tarpy is pissed at Davydenko for not making Davis Cup a priority, and playing in China last week. Not to say it's the reason he's not playing tomorrow, because if he was clearly one of the two best options in singles, I think he would be playing.

There was some scuttlebutt earlier in the year about Davydenko having a falling out concerning Davis Cup, and possibly not playing. Never knew exactly what that was about, or the specific details.

Also, found it interesting in his blog last week from China that he pointed out that he wasn't thinking at all about Davis Cup, and that he was focused solely on the tournament at hand. I suspect that could have been a veiled jab concerning criticism on his decision to play in China.

I guess not a huge surprise when you consider Davydenko's terrible record against Roddick and Blake. Interesting stat: the last 6 sets Marat and Andy have played have gone to a tiebreak. I think this has the potential to be closer than people think. Plus of course, Davis Cup is not your ordinary match, so anything can happen :p
