Why I find it easy to root for Baghdatis?

1st set of Beijing final, Ancic serves at *4:5, 0:40.
After a solid volley by Ancic, Baggy hits a great diagonal passing shot and wins the set, but Ancic falls on the ground trying to catch that hit. They showed a slow motion of Baggy later: now he just won the set, but there is not even a hint of celebration or smile, as he rushes to the net to see what happened to Ancic.
Hats down, Baggy. :worship:
Oh and BTW, congrats on your 1st title. :yeah:

Took Ancic a long time to get up, I was a little worried there for a second too.

I love Baghdatis, but honestly I think most other players would have reacted the same way.

Marcos is a real sportsman, that's why he is so important for today's tennis.

most players would have done the same (except for roddick, he'd probably scream "too good", stare down his opponent and run to his chair)

Baggy isn't exceptional in this regard...although a certain Scotsman would probably walk by if it were Stepanek

...but wouldn't most players?

yea, Marcos is very likable and so is Mario. I feared Mario would injury himself in that point, but he should be ok because he still will still play doubles, hope he get this one.

Kiefer would have thrown his racquet to give him the finishing blow. ;)

whoa hater. :o

Marcos has shown lots of great sportsmanship, I think Jon Weirtheim also noted this. Nice to see someone as young as that be able to hold himself maturely and professionally.

I assume you are joking.
I agree that many players will do that like Marcos, but it's still very nice, no?

Guys. don't try to ruin the sweet moments.

I know it's a little cynical, but a lot of players probably show concern for their opponents because they know it makes them look like better sportsmen, not because they're really, really worried about the health of their opponents.

I mean, yeah, it was nice of Baghdatis to check on Ancic, but it isn't the sort of thing that would sway my opinioin of him (I like him anyway).

I know, but for Baggy I'd go on a limb and say it's genuine.

He seems to have a pretty honest reputation. During the match he sort of complained about a point he lost because he said he thought that the linesman had called the serve out. The commentator mentioned that given how he usually behaves on court he thought Marcos probably really did hear someone say something.

I agree, a lot of players show concern when an opponent goes down. Blake did the same thing when Federer fell in their match at USO. Roddick did the same when Kiefer blew his ankle out at Kooyong. In fact, I see Roddick has a new fan in croat123 :hearts:

All the Croatards :inlove: Roddick....they're just playing hard to get

I like Marcos - he's easy to cheer for and he's a good guy...but like others have said, I think most players would have done the same. I was in Toronto at the Rogers Cup and saw one of the Bryans hop over the net after he'd wailed his opponent in the nuts to make sure he was alright. You'd look like a git if you didn't.

I dunno. When you're playing as hard as you can in a professional match in the finals, you'd probably be caught up in the moment. As in, you react without thinking. I doubt any player, after having his opponent fall down, would stop and think, "hey, looking sympathetic would make me look good," and then show signs of concern. Which is why I think many players are unfairly criticized for their "bad" attitude, when it's just their natural way of expressing themselves on court. Nadal may seem loud and energetic during a match, but he seems really shy and introverted in real life.

Marcos having fun out on the court and smiling all the time makes it very easy to root for him. I remember at IW when Nadal was giving him a beating as Baggy was having a very difficult time winning points unless they were on big 1st serves. They played a very long game when Baggy was serving to stay in the match and avoid the bagel. in any case, after the 2nd or 3rd deuce and matc points saved, Baggy goes back to serve again and he has this smile that seems to say, "I know I am getting my ass kicked, but this is a sport that I love so why shouldn't I be having fun?"

First and foremost, I'd like to congratulate Juan Carlos on a great week. I'm gonna say this because I think it needs to be said. I don't think he gets the respect he deserves. C'mon, the guy's been number one in the world, a grand slam champion. i'm happy to see you playing well again.

Ljubicic (skip to 2:10)

I made very unbelievable goal, which was reach Masters Cup. I wanna thank Marat because he's not playing, I'm taking his spot. (which Ljubicic says right in front of him. And why isn't Marat playing? Because his knee is busted. :p )
