I am back from Metz. Paulo played a pretty good 1st set but in the 2nd he got a wrong call from the umpire and got very pissed off. He throwed his racket and talked (or should I say scream ??) with the umpire. He lost the 2nd set and was down 3-0 in the 3rd. I was thinking, no not again a lost when he could and should have win !!!!! But he fight back and finally won !!! :bounce:
I have pics and videos but I need somebody to help to put them on the forum because I have no idea how to do that...:help:

I'm hoping for a change since he's without a coach. I think he's going to try harder when he only has himself to blame now!Seriously, I think it's not unlikely in the short-term.
If he was a little bit bitter about what's happened lately, he might feel free and more motivated.
I'm not too sure for the long-term because Paulo is no Federer. But it might boost him for the end of the season.
Look at Grosjean who sounded pretty bitter too when they decided to split with Stine a few weeks ago and decided to travel alone for the rest of the season. He's playing great in Metz.

You watched the match? How was it?

Here's the story I got...

1st set: Arnaud was broken in his 1st service game... after that it was pretty close. Paulo mostly held his serve with a good serve, forcing an error... nothing indicated his improvement at the net :tape: I think his last service game was broken and they lost the set.

2nd set: Pretty much the same as the 1st one. Paulo's serve was good though -- without it the scoreline would be worse! :o They had chances on bp at 40-40 but Haggard/Moodie always came up with a good serve or ace! :ras:

There were some great points that Paulo won... he hit great return winners down the line which were amazing :yeah: Also some great plays at the net, but mostly from Arnaud

At some point in the 2nd set, when Arnaud made an error and Paulo was walking toward him to slap (?) his hand as doubles partner do. But Arnaud didn't notice and was turning the other way so Paulo kind of reached out for Arnaud's hand and pulled him back or sth like that... it was really cute :awww:

Actually, I found him not that bad... he played well in some games... He managed to hold easily but as usual, not in the crucial games. And I agree, this tb was awful.

And we still don't know if he will have a WC for Bercy but honnestly, from what he has showed so far... he doesn't really deserve it. :o

From inside-tennis.net:

"I missed a few points", a disappointed Mathieu reflected afterwards. "I need to play with more confidence. It's not easy to play him indoors as the surface is very fast, it is better for me to play him on clay. I tried to make him play, make him run. I tried to find his backhand."

:o At least he knows!

He did pretty well last year in Bercy. I hope that they'll give him a chance to defend some points there with a WC. Because, honestly, I don't think he can make it through the qualifying round :p

I listened to his interview on http://www.fft.fr/gptl2006/?id=1945, he says it's too bad there is only one tournament left because he's feeling better on the court (ummm...)
Bercy is the 2nd best tournament in the world for him and he hopes he will do well there.
There were some encouraging things yesterday. In the first set, he got broken in a "silly" way and in the 2nd set, it was only a question of 2-3 points. He was lacking confidence on those points, he says he was "panicking" a little bit.

And a few reactions on: http://www.parlonstennis.com/atp/gptl---reaction-de-paul-henri-mathieu.html
(with a little pic of the press conference)
He says maybe he wanted to win so much that he got tight.
He doesn't know if he's going to play the qualies in Bercy if he doesn't get a WC.

And yeah, he really got tight. The problems of him lacking confidence and panicing in those crucial points are not going to be easy to solve!

I don't even want to think about his rank after the 1st half of next year... I'm ready to say hello to challenger! :wavey: :rolls:

I know this is a :banghead: question, but is Paulo still without a coach?

I'm not 100% sure, but according to his earlier interview (how he felt under so much pressure from his coach and he didn't try to look for one atm, etc.) and seeing there's no news about it yet... I'd say he's still without a coach.

Paulo's new coach is Champion, BTW.It's just for "a few days" according to L'Équipe.
Champion explains they decided this on Friday evening (= it's really a short-term thing) and he will coach him for a week only - as a friend, because Paulo needs help for this tournament. He also says they don't expect any miracle, but he's already coached him 4 years and can tell him a few things face to face.

He says it's the first time ever he played without a hat and it felt a bit weird.
He confirms the thing with Champion is just for this week, that was Champion's idea apparently and Paulo sounds very happy about it.

2) He mumbles a lot. Can barely understand what he's saying. :silly:Oh yes, he does! (Articule quand tu donnes une interview, Paulo!) But you got everything right.

He does sound pretty excited though imo (it's Paulo we are talking about, his joy always is a bit restrained). He says a few times the tournament is not over yet and he wants to "redeem" his season with this tournament, he sounds pretty positive (in comparison to other interviews).

And he still seems a bit mad because of the scheduling thing! He mentions it two times although it is not the topic of the interview. First he hints at problems after some tournaments in that regard ("mal géré la suite de certains tournois") and at the end of the interview, he says again he must be more consistent next year and try to avoid some errors in his tournament schedule. He does sound a bit obsessed with the story after RG.

I just read the article in L'Équipe about the match against Djokovic and Champion does mention a technical problem with the FH, congrats SW. ;) He says he won't change Paulo's game in one week, but by watching him in Lyon on TV, he had noticed a problem with the arm on that shot. I can't give more details, my English isn't good enough, here is the article (the other big problem being the 1st serve - only 50% against Djokovic. It also was an issue against Seppi. Paulo thinks it's not that bad because he served well in the crucial moments, but Champion thinks it's annoying):

His FH was disgusting too... :help:
:spit: My coach told me that I have exactly the same FH as :silly: ! shouldn't have watched the guy so much... now I know why I always run around to hit the BH! :o

What does the article said about his FH anyway? My coach said (about mine) it's something about the way I make contact with the ball. And my wrist hurts quite often because of the grip (which is much like Paulo). I always find it hard to hit the ball flat... I really need my FH since I might have to compete soon. I'll pay Champion if he can fix my FH

:o That's how I understand the score card as well?!?

Despite my poor French, weren't the PJB won 4-3? If that's the case, Gael and Paulo lost their singles and doubles match :rolls: as there were 3 Ds and 4Vs in the space before the score

Nice pic, where did you find it?
I didn't know Richie is as tall as Paulo, he looked shorter to me.

You probably already know it, but there is a little video about the French Championships 2 years ago here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xqxkFmOKBs
It's a promotion video, so they overdo it a little bit when they explain why they totally love this event  , but it's cute though.

Always happy to see you too, hun! :smooch: I just can't leave Paulo's forum postless even if my posts are pretty much pointless! :spit:

I bought 5 DVDs of Paulo's matches, most of them are matches from 2002. He was just amazing... nothing but amazing. The way he played, his passion for the game and he seemed really enjoying every single second out there.

One thing I couldn't help but notice was the fact that he was fearless. He just went for his shots. He took chances without even thinking! (which in his case, I guess it's better to just hit the ball  ) His return of serve, the timing, was great. His backhand winners were all over the place. And the forehand was different. But the most important thing was that he hit the ball much more powerful back then.

:o It comes down to his head in the end!

I've found my 2007 avy, a lucky charm for Paulo  How I wish the 2002glory repeats itself in 2007

I can't believe what I was hoping for just a few months ago has come true!!! :D

Okay, I've just read in GM that Palermo has been cancelled  In a way, I'm so freaking happy!! :rolls:

Why am I happy?!?!?!

Well...

Palermo, the way I see it, is the only reason that kept Paulo a thousand miles away from me! Now it's gone, in case there's no caly tourney as a replacement, Paulo will now have to choose between Mumbai and of course, BANGKOK!! (where i'm forced to be) :rocker2:

I know he might skip these two since he'll have to play in Metz the following week. But 1/3 of my dream has already come true!! The next two parts are to get Paulo here and after that  :rolls:

I'm hoping that he will choose me, hmm Bangkok, over Mumbai. And yes, I'm praying that he won't be playing challengers that time of the year! :p

 Obviously, it's a nonsense post... but still I wanted to tell you guys before Paulo ruins everything! :smash:

It's not that far-fetched Once his AO 4R points drop off, he'll probably be nearly out of the Top 100. :tape:

And a lot of the players in quallies play challengers ;)

Being unseeded is good for him. Now he will have a chance to send some big names (e.g. Roger :tape: ) packing in an early round. ;) And THAT is going to make a headline and surely a live coverage!

Paulo is taking this event VERY seriously, he is not in Rouen to entertain the crowd.
He's spanking Marc at the moment, 6-1 3-0. I took a look at the French forums and people say that he was playing very well yesterday, even if the opponent was really weak, of course.

Edit: Oh my, poor Marc, 6-1 6-0 again.

The website says Paulo played great tennis and Marc also had a back injury.
