It takes something truly earthshattering for SI to devote a cover to anything other than basketball/football/baseball. Federer won his 9th Slam, but did he break any precious long revered records? NO!. GS 14 or 15 or a calendar year slam would probably be the only achievements that would get him an SI cover. Not that I give a damn. SI is a fairly entertaining and informative magazine, and I do enjoy reading it (as long as they don't devote too much of any issue to boreball, hockey, or golf), but it's definately geared towards an American audience. How many covers has Ronaldinho or Zidane been on? The best players of the most popular sport on the planet. But a 17 year old high school phenom basketball player? Instant collector's issue.

The difference is that Tennis does get a lot of air time in the US and European Soccer doesn't so Roger should have made the cover at least once but since he has been killing off the USTA he probably won't.

You guys have it all backwards. The SI cover is actually the kiss of death. The reason Federer keeps winning everything is because he avoids the cover like the plague. If anything, his fans should hope he never gets onto the SI cover and his bashers should be praying daily for it to happen.

it's not like he asked not to get the cover. Football (college for that matter) is just more important than the winner of a GS in the US :rolleyes: . Although honestly, I bet he cares about that cover as much as the american audiences care about his winning his 9th slam. And I think you know how much that is.

I know but that's only based on the decission of corporate big wigs who are trying to invent a new Kournikova. My point is that no matter how they push her to the forefront and try to market her........tennis fans and the general public are not intersted.

I'm pleased to discover that Borg actually made several covers of SI, back in the heydey of the 1970s when tennis was big. I've posted a few below. Throughout the years, Lendl, Becker and Martina N. have also been featured. It's too bad that interest in tennis has waned so much, or is it the interest in foreign players?...

BTW, the half-pics of Roddick and Sharapova are due to the US Open conflicting with the beginning of the football season. I'm sure if Andy had won Wimbledon he would have received a full cover as did Maria.
