AAMI 'Kooyong' Classic 2007

Since I saw the Hopman Cup thread I thought it was time to make one for Kooyong. Who are the most likely players to come out, and tickets are on sale now. Excellent value for money, I paid $87 for 4 days of watching the top players. I really hope they bring some spaniards out, and that Mirnyi comes out again because his personality is so damn great. I'd like to see Nalbandian come out too because I haven't seen him play before.

i've found the news at the sydney newspaper ;)

http://www.smh.com.au/news/tennis/safin-to-play-kooyong-hewitt-sticks-with-sydney/2006/10/24/1161455701915.html

player field:
federer
nalbandian
ljubicic
roddick
safin
haas
stepanek
murraysorry no spaniards as they like the tapas in sydney (or auckland?) more ;) but it's a strong field, the tournament is as always spoilt for choice.

thanks a lot. Yeah it is a rather nice field, though I'd rather Murray and Stepanek wern't playing, but oh well. The rest of the field is nice though. And yeah it is too bad about the spaniards, but thats what aus open is for.

Ah I see you're a Murray fan. I'll be honest, I've seen a few of his Wimbledon matches on TV and the guy just really annoys me. I'm not saying he's not a good player, his ranking reflects that he is, but i've watched him play before and i really don't enjoy watching him. And with a field as strong as what it is, I think theres about a 1% chance of Murray winning it.

Murray is young, brash, common and arrogant...just we need in this country to get tennis to the masses....maybe he wont win it....Id give him a 33% chance....remember he has beaten the likes of Federer and Gonzalez this year so you never know !

Yeah it would be good if he could publicise scotland a bit more. And mabye he does have a good chance since it is only an exhibition match, and the top players rarely play their best. It should be an interesting tournament though

I said once in GM when appeared Kooyong's list of players, and I will repeat here: WHERE IS GONZO??? Fernando has said many times (and the last one it was few days ago) that he has scheduled this exhibition in his calendar and he will go to participate there. Maybe any player of that list finally won't go? (Murray or Stepanek maybe... )

I completely agree with you. At least Gonzo is entertaining, and he's a great player. I would much rather see Gonzo than Murray or Stepanek.

Ok, I've decided I am going to go for the 1st day again. It was a nice lead-in to the AO for me last year so I'll give it another go :) (This time with a cushion for my arse - those wooden seats are BAAAAD :o ).

I'm happy to see Ivan, Radek and Andy there, they will give me something to cheer :)

Usually channel 7 only shows about 1 match on the 3rd day of play, and i think the final. The coverage is pathetic. Even the aus open coverage sucks, because not everyone just wants to watch the aussies.

Channel 7 usually show the first two matches of the day, I think. I remember when they used to show the remaining matches on at about 10pm so we could get to see them all. What is Foxtel showing by the way? The remaining matches on delay, I would assume?

It's an exhibtion event, you can't expect it to win over an actual tournament (sydney international). seven do as well they can.

It´s up to Tommy Haas where German reputation in tennis world lies.
It is turning to be a nightmare for German players this season.
I just pray to God that Tommy is in good shape.

Well, last year he did very well in both Kooyong and in the Aussie Open, so let's hope for the same this year. :)

I'd appreciate it if ppl with Channel 7 or Foxtel could record/upload some of the Kooyong matches, thx. :)

You´re right ;) I was talking about Roddick but now you mention it.. Ljubicic Too!.. Hes just serve! :)

And how many masters or grand slams have Ivan Won.. LETS COUNT!..

... 0! And FAT DAVE.. More or less just the shangai beating federer when he was 2 sets down..

You should respect more the players and their past..

Thanks

no offense, but i'm pretty sure nalbandian didn't have nearly as many obstacles to overcome as ivan

Actually Nalbandian has had to overcome alot in his personal life, with the kidnapping threats, and his cousin last year suffering a tragic death.

Why has this thread turned into the 'Who has the best sob story?' thread? Ivan had a tough childhood and I admire him for coming out of that stronger and turning into the man that he is now. That doesn't mean that other players never suffer from tragic events happening in their lives. David was very young when he lost his father, he had his own tragedies to deal with and comparing them to Ivan's is silly and childish. Both players suffered enough without this turning into a war about who suffered most.
Also, I am a Nalby fan and I have never dissed Ivan or considered him a fluke. The guy is a good tennis player and someone that can give Nalbo a run for his money. I do think Nalbandian is the better player in general but he never shows that in most of the matches he played against Ivan, making the latter the deserving winner in their head to head count.
In conclusion I wish both Dave and Ivan well in this tournament.

That argument about who had a tougher life was very dumb. It has nothing to do with tennis and it's obvious that Ljubicic had much more difficulties but that doesn't mean that we have to feel sorry for him or that we can't criticize him in any way.

Yeah, Gonzalez has been guaranteed some match practice. I wonder if that means two matches each, or one each. It seems to imply two, but one seems more likely to me.

Stubs has already guaranteed two best-of-three-sets matches for Djokovic and Gonzalez later this week.
