With Hewitt coming it will be a great DC clash. I wish I had tickets.

My guess:

Nalbandian vs. Philippoussis

Acasuso vs. Hewitt

Nalbandian/Calleri vs. Arthurs/Hanley

Nalbandian vs. Hewitt

Acasuso vs. Philippoussis

Although Argentina is favorite Australia will be very tough to beat. Hewitt is a great DC player, and Philippoussis has victories on clay over Pioline and Grosjean in Davis Cup. Arthurs and Hanley are also capable of giving the Argentine team a hard time.

I can't wait to see what happens.

Because of this I re-open the "Argentina vs. Australia thread". I hope we can talk about this great clash in the semis of the Davis Cup between two strong teams.

What is going to be so "great" about this clash, a 5-0 ass kick?

Better tie is Russia v USA

Well, I think Argentina is the big favorite. But Hewitt had a great performance to beat Kuerten in Brazil, and Philippoussis has victories against Grosjean and Pioline in Davis Cup on clay. Plus Hanley and Arthurs are a very good doubles team.

I know Hewitt and the Scud are not playing as well as they used to, but I think they are a dangerous team.

Ya, but as you say they are not playing well. Hewitt is not up to a top 20 standard on any surface these days let alone on clay :tape:

If this was 5 years ago, I think Aus would have been favourites, but now anything but 5-0 win and I would be shocked

Argentina doesn't have Coria, Gaudio, Puerta and Cañas, for different reasons. We still have a good team and are big favorites, but I am not sure how Acasuso will react when playing against Hewitt, and it wouldn't be crazy if Hanley and Arthurs pulled a victory. That means 2-1 for Australia... and anything can happen in a Davis Cup sunday. Stranger things have happened.

I don't think it will be an extremelly lopsided tie, as almost everyone does.

If Chucho plays like did in his DC debut against Sweden, I don't think he will have many problems dealing with Hewitt.

I agree.

But first, Acasuso hasn't been playing like he did at the beginning of the year, second, Argentina plays to be in the Final of the Davis Cup for the second time ever, third, Hewitt is much more dangerous than Thomas Johansson and Bjorkman, especially in DC.

Hewitt has been plagued with injuries this year but he still managed to: Win Queens, Final Las Vages, Final San Jose, QF Wimbledon, QF US Open :p !

Even at Hewitt`s lowpoint he`s still atleast Top-20,~did you watch him beat Gasquet at the US Open  or Blake at Queens  or give Nadal a run for his money at the FO  .....

Hey mate  ...#Well it`s obvious that Argentina are the favorites but without Coria & Gaudio->> plus a recently underperforming Nalbandian then the tie is more open than some people would believe ;) ..

If Hewitt can win his 1st of the reverse singles then I`d say the Aussies are 50:50 to win it. However if Rocky Llegs loses that one then the prospects won`t be good

I have no idea what to expect.. at the moment it doesnt seem too good for the aussies.. hewitt is getting "intense" treatment just to be fit enough to play. And i honestly can't remember the last time mark played on clay...for the past 2 years he's missed the entire clay season. And wayne is practically coming out of retirement to play.

BUT if any team were to pull off a major upset it would be the aussies. Mark for some reason seems very excitied to play and supposedly in heavy training with pete sampras old fitness guru brett stephens. I'd love to see mark pull off the unthinkable and win a singles rubber.. but i do believe it will be up to hewitt to and the doubles team to seal victory.

Philippoussis played on clay in Bermuda, in April. He beated Marin and lost to Fish.

I don't think he will win any of the rubbers, but who knows?

What is Hewitt's physical problem?

I really can't wait for this tie. Argentina is gonna kick Australia's ass, but to be patriotic I will say 4-1 (Australia to win the doubles) even though I really think the score will be 5-0. I'm really disappointed that Coria isn't going to be playing in this tie, and man that pic of Chela in the first post is horrible. He's a very attractive guy and he just looks plain ugly in that pic

I agree, but nor Roitman neither Del Potro would play if they were part of the team anyway. The other two players, possibly Nalbandian and Acasuso would play the 5 matches. Maybe JMDP playing the doubles to rest Acasuso.

But I do think there is room for a surprise. Hewitt beating Chucho is not crazy, I know you like Chucho and I do too, but Hewitt is extremelly dangerous in DC. Especially when playing in an atmosphere like the one we will have in Parque Roca (I was going to say Lawn Tennis :p ).
And although Argentina is favorite for the doubles, this is Davis Cup, the Australians could pull a win.

I don't see Hewitt doing it, he isn't as good as he was. I mean it's not even a sure thing that Chucho will play singles, it wouldn't surprise to see Calleri play on Day 1, though it's time for Chucho to play singles, he needs the big match experience and hope he doesn't shit himself, though Mancini I think can get the best out of him.

Yes, Agustín could play the singles... if I were in Mancini's position (thank god I am not, the team would be ruined :) ), I would play Chucho in day one. And Calleri for the doubles. If Chucho's performance is not good, then we can do the same we did in Malaga and play the explosive and irregular Calleri in a decisive match. I always think of Calleri in Davs Cup as a desperate measure.

We have had this discussion before. If Calleri is fit he'd always be picked for any Davis Cup squad and it's far from a desperate measure and he has been in very good form of late, better than what Acasuso has had. They will decide from who is training stronger, in this case I don't see it's going to be a problem.

Calleri's strength is that is a solid Doubles player and in singles can beat anyone anywhere outside the grass.

The thing is I don't trust Calleri's head.

The only time he won a real singles match in Davis Cup since we are in the world group was against Ferrero... and you have to agree with me that it was a desperate measure, and that he played awesome but without pressure.

He also beated El Aarej and Zib in the 5th match of ties that Argentina won 5-0.

He lost the other two matches: against Voltchkov and Ljubicic.
About the match against Voltchkov I have nothing to say, the surface was impossible. But against Ljubicic he did a great match, but fell short as he does many times in important matches.

In doubles, the pressure is shared, in singles he tends to choke.
But anyway, I think he is a valuable part of the team.

Yes they are the best right now. I would have put Gaudio instead of Chela, but its ok.

The strange thing (not that strange actually) is that we are closer to get to the final with this team than with others which were better in my opinion (with Coria, Gaudio, Cañas or Puerta).

Gaudio is too busy skiing at the moment and they need to be 100% focused. What you are saying is very commonplace with the team thing. I mean there have been numerous examples in football where for example the Danes were a brilliant team in the mid 80s and never won anything, then they won the Euros in 92 and they weren't half as good.

Reputation doesn't win matches and btw kangaroo is fantastic, it's very lean and tasty and fillets on the asado very good.

The second singles player for Argentina is still unknown.

Mancini has said Nalbandian will play the 1st singles match, but still hasn't made public if Calleri, Chucho or Chela will play the other rubber.

Cosidering their style of play, Acasuso will probably be the choice. Calleri's all or nothing style fits Hewitt better.
Chucho's long rallies would be tougher for Hewitt.

Chela is the onlyone who has beaten Hewitt.
Acasuso has the required style of game.
Calleri is playing better than the other two.

Tough choice for Mancini.

great stadium¡¡

Yes, finally we have a stadium big enough to play the Davis Cup.

The Stadium of the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club has the history, is the cathedral of South American tennis, but is too small.

There is a good thing and a bad thing about this stadium:

The good thing is that it will have a moving roof.

The bad thing is that it will be built while the Davis Cup final is being played. So if Argentina and USA get to the final, the stadium wont be available.

Not really a concern given the low probability of this final happening.

Anyway, very nice stadium. :yeah:

Of course I would rooting for Australia in this tie, but possibility just too low when Hewitt not good enough in form and Philippoussy not even a top 100 level player. Arthurs sucking on clay and worst. Australia's weekest is clay, Argentina's strongest is clay. Upset with Australia win is welcome, but does not happen for me.

I don't think there will be a roof needed for the final this year.

Yes, a final Argentina - USA is probably not going to happen.

But for the ones who are interested, the roof is not for tennis. The stadium is not only for tennis, but for basketball, volleyball and different shows.

The Idea is to have big events there, like an volleyball World League, Basketball games (nat. team and NBA), Davis Cup, concerts.....

Parque Roca sports complex will also work as the basketball training center for the national team. There will be a school of tennis too.

It wasn't built by the AAT (Asociación Argentina de Tenis) but by the City of Buenos Aires.

The building of the moving roof is scheduled for that time, and from what I have read in the press, the possible final wouldn't be played there.

I guess the tie would be held in the Buenos Aires Lawn tennis, that is available always but when the ATP Buenos Aires is played.

Fitzy confident of Davis Cup boilover

Australian Davis Cup captain John Fitzgerald says his squad is capable of causing an upset in this weekend's semi-final tie against Argentina in Buenos Aires.

Australia have lost to Argentina in their past two ties, their most recent meeting being a fiery quarter-final clash in Sydney last year.

The visitors will be led in the singles by world number 19 Lleyton Hewitt and they welcome back two-time grand slam finalist Mark Philippoussis, who is making his first Davis Cup appearance since 2004.

Wayne Arthurs and Paul Hanley have also been included in Australia's squad and are likely to play the doubles rubber.

Fitzgerald said he was confident of defeating Argentina, despite the fact the tie would be played on clay.

"We are going to pull together and we think we can cause an upset," he said.

"It is a tough ask and we understand the magnitude of the match and what it means but heck it means a lot, it is semi-final.

"We've got a chance to go into a Davis Cup final if we pull off a win here and we are going to throw everything at it."

Argentina have named a strong line-up, headlined by world number four David Nalbandian.

Arthurs said although he rated Australia's chances of victory, he and his team-mates were clear underdogs.

"They've got four guys in the top 30 and we've only got one guy in the top 100 so in that respect it is very tough," he said.

"They are playing on their home surface, they are playing with a home crowd that is going to be so parochial... I would put it up there with one of, if not the toughest tie, that I am going to be playing in."

Australia has previously defeated Argentina on clay, winning an inter-zonal tie in Buenos Aires in 1977.

Journalists are saying that Chucho will be chosen by Mancini to be the second singles player.

As I said in another thread, I think thats the best choice. Acasuso's style of play, with a lot of top spin, long rallies and very heavy shots should trouble Hewitt a lot in a slow (probably wet) clay court.
Calleri's flatter shots and more of an attacking game fit Hewitt better.

Plus Acasuso is a better clay court player.

Vamos Misionero!!!

Davis Cup seems to be where Nalbandian shows fight and passion - it is nice to see (outside some of the trash talking). If he showed the same spirit in non-DC tournaments, I am pretty sure his number of titles would be higher.

I was glad to see no real ugliness on the court between any of the players. There was no tension at all between Hewitt and Acasuso.

so we will have Chela vs Arthurs and Acasuso vs Scud tomorrow?

I still have a little hope about Roddick and Blake tomorrow, and I will sleep 2 days at stadium gates to get a ticket for DC finals :)

if not then I'll have to wake up 6am during all the weekend like in 2002 semifinals.

we can do it at carpet anyway!

Chela will surely play. Nalbandian will surely not play. So there is Calleri and Chucho for one singles. Since Chucho played a 5 sets singles match, I think Calleri who only played a 3 sets doubles match, will play tomorrow.

Ridiculous, just ridiculous. Hewitt should be sent to Devil's Island after losing to the second biggest choker ever.
Arthurs and Hanley should be sent to a place worse. Losing doubles to two claycourters that can barely volley (Nalbandian is regular, but Calleri... :haha: ).
Preposterous!

Please accept it...it happened..its real..Argentina are in the final!!!!...what can you do....

Acho que o Daniel venceria em 3, no máximo 4 sets. O Vinciguerra é MUITO fraquinho. Mas não questiono o Sarjetta, questiono o Mello e principalmente o Guga em duplas, o cara não joga desde o Brasil Open.

Ask Nalbandian, he is the expert in the subject matter

Anyway enough of the circular discussion, Argentina are through and it should be a good final.

What's the deal with Nalbo and Hewitt anyway?
I know they've had trouble before but he's not the only player to have experienced this when it comes to Hewitt so why all this trash-talking?

[QUOTE=bad gambler]Ask Nalbandian, he is the expert in the subject matter

Words have been said back and forth between the two over many years - so what? It's a good laugh for us to hear and poke fun at during the sometimes empty build up during the barren Tennis weeks.

Anyway enough of the circular discussion, Argentina are through and it should be a good final.

Hope so, it was a good battle last time we were in Russia, hopefully it will be again but with a slightly different result. :)

Long story dating back to junior DC, and then the fiery battles at the AO when Hewitt at the end of the match told David to "have a nice flight home you twat", or something to that effect. Since then David beat him in Sydney - where Argentina were greeted with the Canas shirts and other insults before, during and after. This time Hewitt is the "twat" who will be enjoying his flight home. Adios, Lleyton. Thanks for coming. :wavey:

The irony being they now have the same sponsor and they pay Nalbandian alot more. True, payment comes in McDonalds and Dunkin' Donut vouchers - but David gets more all the same.

It's always good and congrats to Argentina.

Barbecued kangaroo fillet

Serving size: Serves 4
Cooking time: Less than 30 minutes

INGREDIENTS

4 x 250g trimmed kangaroo fillets
Extra-virgin olive oil
Freshly ground black pepper

METHOD

Trim the kangaroo fillets (if you have not bought them trimmed).

Smear the fillets quickly with olive oil and grind on pepper, then cover with plastic film and allow to sit for 20 minutes before cooking. (You need to coat the kangaroo thoroughly as the meat oxidises very quickly once cut or removed from its vacuum packaging.)

Preheat the barbecue to high, or stand a frying pan over a high heat. Cook the fillets for three minutes on the first side (don't turn before then or the flesh will stick and tear), then turn and cook for another two to three minutes, depending on the thickness of the meat.

Allow to rest in a warm spot for a good 6–8 minutes.

Word on the street is that Philippoussis went partying yesterday and couldn't be bothered to wake up early and play one of the dead rubbers.

And Arthurs was tired and didn't feel like playing either. Poor Chela didn't get to play a single match.
