Davydenko sits at 54 wins, followed by Nadal with 52 wins, Federer has 70 wins. So he is #2 in matches won this year. He finishes 05 with 56 wins and will attempt to pass it this week.

Best wins this year
Gaudio @ #10 in Roland Garros
Hrbaty @ #15 in Australian Open
Haas @ #16 in US Open

Three more small tournament wins, and he will make it close but will likely finish ahead of Nadal in matches won this year.

But Federer got his 70 wins playing far fewer tournaments than Davydenko. Nadal has also played fewer events than Davydenko. Total wins mean less than winning %.
