What's the difference between.....

ATP Ranking and ATP 2006 race? Is the ATP ranking the overall points that a player accumulates in his career? If that is so, which is the basis for the world rankings? Sorry, I'm not familiar with the rankings system. :)

The ATP ranking is the player's points for the tournaments played in the last 52 weeks, so it's a rolling total that changes weekly as new tournament points are added and points from last year are no longer counted.

The Race is points accumulated from tournaments from the start of the season in January to the end, and are really only used to determine who will play at the Tennis Masters Cup as far as I know.

Both races agree by the year-end, in the sense that 1 race point = 5 entry ranking points.

always some complicated areas of the rankings..
another key element to the rankings are the manditory events, optionals..all adding up to a best 18. (4 slams, 9 TMS, 5 optionals)
usual for lower ranked players points it will be any Slams, any TMS they played in and all the rest come from optionals.
if a player has a high ranking like top46, means the TMS are manditory for him.
they have 5 optionals = international series gold events/mickey mouse events those types.
so they look to add points from those 'extra' 5 events.

Davydenko has a best 18th of 110 entry points as he has been master of the mickey mouse events this year, which means even if he reached the semi final in beijing, worth 75 points, he doesnt gain those points, can only add 10 points by getting to the final, the final is worth 120.
Nalbandian has a best 18th of 0, so he can gain points at any time from an internation series event.
when a player has filled his optionals, the only way he can add points is to surpass the lowest tally from his list, a year later those points will fall of his list.. that's the entry ranking side of it.
