Will Federer Break Petes Record?

I'm a HUGE Federer fan and I was a big Sampras fan as well.

I thought it was unlikely of Federer to break Petes record but the way things are going, it really looks like Federer might do it!

What do you guys think? Do you think Roger is going to do it? Do you want him too? And if he does break Petes all time grand slam record where would you guys want it to take place?

I think if Federer does end up breaking Petes record, Pete should be there. I think that would be pretty cool. It sucks Petes record holding is seemingly so short but I still think that would be a great moment.

What do you guys think?

i think so, coz he is only 25 and already won 9 slams, he can play till 30, so i guess he will gonna win 19 slams   , waaa, poor pete has to finish no.2 behind him

sorry, i know roger will break the record but i don't want him to, i don't like him nor i dislike him, but that i like pete more, i want him to keep the record, but sadly i don't see he can keep it for long  :wavey:

Hi there jacobhiggins :wavey:

He could break the record and he also could not, who can tell what will happen in the next few years, anything can, so I can't say for sure - and i for one hope he doesn't do so.

I want to see that record stay for awhile longer. :worship: :wavey:

Well he would have to win 2 more slams next year to keep the pace .

I think he will at least tie the record .

I thin Roger has an excellent chance of breaking Pete's awesome slam record, but I would hope at the same that Roger won't break it........It's kinda weird to say that when I love them both :p

Roger would deserve to break that record as he's a better allround player (and I'm sure he will).

(Angiel, no need to insult me, that's just my opinion to the thread issue ;) )

I think he is a better all around player too so I hope he breaks it as well.

It would be a shame if he doesn't and it will be a shame if he dosen't win the French!

Records are made to be broken I say, I just didn't think a player like Federer would come right after a player like Sampras!

angiel, he is too sensitive ;) i.e. i just said the players are afraid of roger that they lost before they face him and he respondned that I always try to find way to bash roger   , but in fact it was a praise coz what i meant was that roger is almost unbeatable ;)

its truth that i love pete more and i will defend him whenever people said untrue or insulting things on him, but that does not mean i fail to acknowledge roger's greatness ;), i will give him credit whenever i think it is justified ;)

Whoever ends up with the record deserves the record as far as I am concerned. Neither will be begrudged by me at least... and this is coming from a hardcore Federer fan. If Federer is great enough to beat Sampras' total by more than 2 without a French Open then he is greater.. if Sampras keeps it by more than 1 or 2 then he is greater. If Federer ends up with 12 slams but 1 french open and more overall titles, then I would find it hard to seperate them. If Federer wins 13, 14 or 15 without a French Open then I am not going to say either one is greater.

What I will say is Federer beats Sampras prime for prime on todays courts more often than not.. and Sampras on the courts of yesteryear moreoften than not.

Anyway those are my opinions and if you could be arsed to read that then cheers. ;)

Dont listen to Jacobhiggens, I know him from another forum, he is NOT a federer fan, he is just a kid and he LOVESS and ADORES federer, he used to always talk badly about pete on the other forum saying that pete was never considered great at the same age as Federer etc etc. Federer is more consistent from the back court but what the kids will never understand is the depth of the net court game, anticipation, net coverage, reaction skills, Sampras is far superior to federer in every way at the net but i will argue that federer has a better drop volley, sampras was also more solid, he rarely missed the tough high volleys or the dipping attempted passing shots, and he didnt need to run around the forehand at the net (Like federer did at RG he lost that point at 40 love then lost that service game). Then theres confidence at the net, Federer has a better return, and better defense, he has better stamina, and unlike pete he didnt "tank" matches in tournaments outside the Grandslams, if he "didnt feel like playing his best" (which is something that really annoyed me about pete), Federer also has a better inside out forehand for sure and more variety off that wing, Pete had more power and anyone who was born before 1990 when pete first played who WATCHED tennis back in those days, knows that Pete had an exceptionally solid and deadly backhand down the line and cross court and even his slice USED to be great and he changed the direction on the ball excellently on both wings, but that side of his game really started to die down after timmy got sick in 95 when he GOT LAZY AND STOPPED TRAINING ON HIS ALLROUND GAME, thats another annoying thing about Pete, Federer is more motivated to train his allround game than pete was, pete was the one who made his forehand stronger and his backhand great and consistent and made him dangerous on clay, when he wasnt there to push him pete just focussed on wat he wanted to do but Federer isnt like that.

I have NO DOUBT, that Federer will demolish all of petes records, and I think he will win at least one french NO DOUBT, Id be suprised if he didnt win 2. He will also win at least 7 YEC masters cups, and will win more masters titles than agassi, he will build more than a 60 match/5-6 year grass winning streak, and will win wimbledon MORE than 7 CONSECUTIVE times, He himself said he believes he will beat Petes Wimbledon record and get more consecutive than Borg, I have no doubt he will.

I didnt believe nadal would make the final of the french this year, let alone win it, I LOVEEEE RAFA but next year will be his most testing year, and lookin at the US Series.... things are going downhill for him, then Federer will remain unchallenged except for Baghdatis and Gasgquet maybe a bit of a challenge, but I think he will win the Calendar Grandslam next year, and i think he will win the Golden grandslam by winning at Beijing and he wishes to retire At SW19 in 2012 after winining gold in the olympics. His FOCUS AND MOTIVATION, tell me that nobody will stop it, Rafa could and would with his own drive and mental strength, but his game is too physical and demanding for him to keep up. Oh and he will be minimum 7 years at number 1 most likely 8 years, but i think after 7 he will drop down cos he is already saying that the pressure of being number 1 can get pretty draining at times, so no point after breaking the record.

Carlos Moya even said that todays top ten isn't as good as in 98 when he was # 1 .

I have no doubt that Pete would have beat Roger at Wimbledon had they played eachother in their primes . However , Roger would win on a neutral surface .

Records are meant to be broken , but having the record doesn't always tell you the whole truth .

And that is the truth, today's competition is so weak it is not funny, and i dont think Roger would beat Pete and neutral at all, most of those neutral surfaces are fast court and Pete was great and fast surfaces. :worship: :wavey:

When I first really started getting into Federer around late 2002 after Pete retired of course at the time I had hoped Pete's record would remain unbroken.

But the more I have seen and come to admire Roger the more I want him to break the record.

Don't get me wrong, I was always a HUGE Pete fan, always cheered for him throughout the good times and the bad times and it was one helluva ride being his fan for so many years!

But I believe records are made to be broken. And if Roger does break Pete's GS records and in a few years time after Rogi retires there will come another player who I will like and follow and will have a realistic shot at breaking Rogi's record I would root for that player to do it too.

Yeh sure dumbass, u post on the tennis.com forums.

Angiel U know me better than this dimwit, he is not right in the head either, multiple personalities, on that forum he made posts saying "nobody considered Pete the greatest at 24. but everybody considers roger the best at 24" and when the pete fans said that they still believe pete is the greatest he said "That is because you are a Sampras fan boy". Trust me this guy can hardly make sentences using more complex words than the ones learnt in 4th grade english.

Jacobhiggens also called pete one dimensional and said he only won using his serve, had no competition etc and said Federer is playing the greatest players in history etc etc. You can check the posts on this board but on www.tennis.com the discussion forums he does nothing but praise Federer and put down sampras, you might not be able to find a post like that in this forum but just to prove how lost he is, he once said "Rafael nadal has been warned many times of his cheating/on court coaching, AS THE EMBASSADOR OF ALL TENNIS, Roger federer had to call him out on this", thats not an exact quote but for someone to be so utterly lost as to beleive there is such a position as "Embassador" of tennis at least establishes the character of this nutjob, Federer Fanatic plain an simple, however he claims that he hates people who are Fans of Players Go figuire he hates himself.

AND TO ALL THE NORMAL FEDERER FANS, I dont disagree with the fact that Federer will break all of Sampras' records, I dont see any possibility of him NOT breaking it, its a mathematical impossibility and defies logic. Sadly I cant say the same for my Rafa  And No I dont think that there will come a young player who will threaten to break federers records, most importantly cos Federer is aiming to break every single record, the records were set more or less by guys just trying hard to win but they didnt ahve that same narrow minded focus, EXCEPT For Pete in 1997 when He got to 10 Slams, thats when he believed he could break the record but before that he jsut aimed to win/do well my point is that Roger has a greater sense of history than ANYONE thats what drives him to win such unimportant matches outside of the slams, like when u see him almost losing in events like Dubai or even that grass court warm up event, he wins it cos he KNOWS what he wants better than anyone ive seen, and I just wish Pete were that ambitious. Federer doesnt really play warm up tournaments, he choses his tournaments each year and plays to win even if he does have to pull out his A game at unexpected times. Hes not stupid by any means.

TENNIS-X NEWS, NOTES, QUOTES AND BARBS

From Tennis.com's James Martin: "After Federer won this year's U.S. Open, he received a text message, out of the blue. Sampras wrote to congratulate him. He called Federer three days later to see if he got the text. (Apparently, the world's No. 1 is quick to return tennis balls, not messages.) "Pete said that I dominate the sport more than he used to," Federer told TENNIS Magazine. "It showed me that Sampras is pretty relaxed now. Records are there to be broken."

I am a fan of both.
In order to respect both the players, I have hoped for something like this, maybe Roger can win 13 altogether, and including all four (not necessarily in one year), while Pete can have the 14, but missing the French. Then both have something the other does not have.
By having 13 including French, Roger will be ahead of almost every player in some dimension except Laver and Sampras. And Sampras will be ahead of almost every player except Laver and Roger.

I have no doubt that Roger will break Pete's record and while I don't like it I've come to terms with it. Tennis wise Roger deserves it and it's really not his fault that I don't like him as much as I liked Pete. Anyway, it would have been great if Pete was able to hold on to his records longer but records are made to be challenged and broken. If Roger does it, good for him and so be it. For me it doesn't change anything about the fact that Pete was special. I kinda laugh when I read all those comments from some Roger fans who seem to think Sampras was no more then a serve and mediocre volleys. If that is true then where the hell are Karlovic's 14 Slams? Both belong among the best and while Roger will be considered greater in the end it doesn't matter. Being second best is quite impressive too.
