IRAKLI LABADZE:a good year being squandered

Ok. Well, as most of us know. Irakli Labadze made the 4th round of Wimbledon. He obviously didnt LOOK like he was in good shape but he was getting through his matches convincingly. So he has an amazing run at Wimbledon and he goes to Davis Cup brimming with Confidence and wins both of his matches there. He is on a roll and you know what he does? He hasnt played a professional match since July 21st. With that kind of confidence he could have had an impressive run on the US Hardcourts. But no, he is probaly wasted away at home on the couch eating and drinking beer after beer. Its SO frustrating. I am praying he has been working his ass off to get in tip top shape. But thats a fat chance :tape:

At around 160 in the World his ranking is too low to get to ATP main tour events. I'm guessing he has been toiling on the Futures and Challenger ciruits which don't show up on the ATP stats.

He actually showed up at the challenger is Dusseldorf this week, losing 7-6 6-0 to Tomislav Peric.

I'm sure that doesn't make you feel any better.

Labadze is also on the entry list for the Grenoble challenger (which starts Sept 25). He was on the alternate list for the ATP event in Bucharest this upcoming week, but pulled out. That's pretty much all I can find on him in the near future. But it doesn't mean that much - you don't need to be on an alt list to enter qualifying.

On a related note, it seems that there is a whole subclass of wasted talent - guys who play well at times, but for some reason just don't play half the season, or are in bad shape. Labadze is one of these guys, along with Wesley Whitehouse, Daniel Elsner, Todor Enev, Roman Valent....all former top juniors.

Satellites, Futures and Challengers are governed by the ITF and while players do earn ATP ranking points in them they do not show in a player's ATP bio in his win/loss record. For example a player who has not played an ATP main tour event or Slam but has played many Challengers and Futures will show up on the ATP website has having played no events and having a 0-0 win/loss record yet will still have an ATP ranking.

Are challengers run by the ITF? I thought the ATP organized them.

Regardless of that, atptennis.com was revamped and now includes all ATP and ITF results on the "playing activity" link from player bio pages, although it does not include any qualifying matches. It's true that the main bio page record includes only main draw ATP and Grand Slam matches, but you can find the other stuff in the side pages. Also included is a week-by-week rankings history that goes back to the mid-90s or so - it's pretty interesting stuff and a far cry from the uselessness that defined past versions of the ATP's official site.

Yes I was talking about the main bio. I know a player who has only made the main draw of one main tour event this year but has played Challengers, Futures, and Satellites nearly every week and his main profile lists his ATP win/loss record as 0-1. You have to go to the other pages has you said to see his other results. And yes the ITF runs them--the WTA website differentiates between the player's WTA and ITF records in their player profiles. Go to the ITF site and type in Labadze and you'll find his activity in those events.

they only show main draw matches at atp level and davis cup.. i dont think that is a bad idea...
