Martina brings down the curtain on her astonishing career with one final title win, to make it Grand Slam #59, with Bob Bryan, beating Damm/Peschke 6-2 6-3 in an extremely entertaining mixed doubles final.

Bob did the big serving and Martina showed the astonishing reflexes that have been the hallmark of her game for more than 30 years.

As we say goodbye to another amazing champion at this year's US Open, I just wanted to take a moment to congratulate her on her career and her amazing success, and to express my admiration for the way she's done it. If you're going to go out, do so winning a title if you possibly can.

Bob Bryan - great work from him partnering Martina, he protected his partner extremely well and allowed Martina to leave professional tennis with one more slam title.

Thanks for the memories Martina, you've been terrific.

Bob, see you next year with Mike :)

Pretty awesome stuff from Bob and Martina, especially Bob's serving :rocker2:

Martina's career has been nothing less than spectacular. However, she has 'retired' a few times already, we'll see if this is really the last we see of her.

I remember Bob saying Martina had the fastest hands of anyone he has ever played with.

It was entertaining to see her last match. Truly the greatest competitor ever. The match was pretty boring, though.

Yeah lets see if she has indeed retired...
59 is an annoying number, she might want a 60th GS title :p

was also interesting to hear in the first round they took out Mike Bryan and his partner :)

You know I think I can see her trying to get another Slam Title. I can't remember her partner's name in the Women's Doubles, but the comment was made that she didn't want Martina to retire because she wanted to continue to play Women's Doubles with her.

I think that Bob and Martina can really make a run at Wimbledon next year, they pretty much dominated in all their matches at the open and so on grass which Martina's even better, you would think that she has a pretty good chance and I'm sure Bob won't say no to her...we'll see.

Has she really retired a bunch of times? I just remember that in 1994, she announced her retirement from singles competition but kept on playing doubles. She eventually retired from doubles competition altogether but about 5 years ago, she started competing in doubles again which makes this retirement this year her second retirement from doubles competition. If I'm correct on that, then she just basically retired once but decided to come back and now she's retiring one more time. Isn't everyone totally overexaggerating her retirement thing saying she's retired so many times when in fact she's done it just twice? I think she has the right to separate her singles and doubles career. I don't know what all the fuss is about? The woman still wins titles when girls and boys a third of her age are struggling to make it to second round.

Question : it's MENStennisforums. Sure that writing about mixed doubles isn't irrelevant? ;)

Oh well, it's Navratilova, so I guess MTF is a proper place :D

I wish they had shown that match on TV. It would have been better than Sharapova.

I have watched Martina since her first chubby appearance at Wimbledon. Alas, I only saw her live, on the practice courts at NASDAQ. There was always too long a line to get into her doubles matches on the outer courts.

Congrat Martina... now go start a seniors tour for women so that we can see Sabitini, Arantxa and Graf/Seles battling it out again.

I think her partner was Nadia Petrova.

Anyways, congrats to Martina and Bob. I saw some of their matches in the last 2 weeks and they played fabulous tennis. :yeah:
