US Open Final: Federer vs. Roddick

Who will take the crown.

We all know about Federer's incredible statistics. This is his 3rd straight US Open final, having beaten Agassi and Hewitt in the other two. He is fighting for a 9th Grand Slam title in his tenth final. If he were to win he would make a record as being the only guy to win Wimbledon and the US Open back to back three years running.

Roddick will be coming in full of confidence. He hasn't played like this since late last year and is looking to build on his victory at Cincinnati. A surprisingly good record for Roddick which may go un-noticed by some is that with his win over Youzhny he has now reached a slam final for the fourth year running.

Who wins?

It'll be interesting, a little different from their previous slam encounters as it's at the Open and Roddick will have an incredible amount of crowd support.

There is a poll ;) The thread is posted as soon as you press post and then you have to make the poll afterwards. This is why there is a gap between the thread appearing and the poll appearing to go alongside it.

Roddick wasn't playing really awesome. He was playing his game - "break an opponent and not to lose my serve". he had some thrilling moments during this tounament (I really thought he could lose to Verdasco), but managed to overcome them.
Federer was playing his game. He was playing good enough to reach the final and was not tested by any of his opponents. If he's losing points, that's usually because of his errors. If he's focused, he hardly ever makes them.
I say Fed in 3. Roddick's form is rising, but not at the peak (I mean, 2003-04). Federer is even better than then. He can read Roddick's serves, change game's speed, has a bigger variety of shots and his tactics - better

Agreed. I think the fact that Roger can read Roddicks serve so well is what results in him losing to him most often, particularly since he RARELY varies its placement. Federer in 4.

I always vote "Fed in straight sets" unless it's vs. Nadal on clay.
So I've voted that again, but won't be too surprised if Roddick takes a set off him.

Interesting. Roddick will have all the crowd behind him and if he gets the big first serve in the right areas he will win. It will be a similar match which was played between federer and blake, but roddick has a bigger serve than blake and mixes it up and has 20000+ people rooting for hi :D.

I think this will be a repeat of Wimbly 2004. Fed in 4.
Rain robbed Roddick. .Roddick dominated federer in the first two sets before rain interrupted. Federer admtted rain helped him. Plus this surface is no match to wimbledon's slow grass surface. :o .

Weird.

Roddick breaking the Federer serve 11 times. Many more than might be expected.

Federer with 35 breaks. At this US Open 6 players have only broken the Roddick serve 5 times between them.

I don't think it's more than might be expected. Once a match isn't too mad considering many of them are five set matches.

How many times has Federer been broken this tournament? 5 as well maybe?

adee-gee
09-10-2006, 01:32 AM
As much as I'd love to see Andy win, I'm just not sure how I can envisage him winning.

Andy needs to:

1) Serve extremely well.
2) Stop coming into the net off the wrong ball. Federer will destroy him if Andy comes to the net off some of the approach shots he has been.
3) Be aggressive on the forehand, don't let Federer settle. The first set of the Wimbledon final in 2004 was the best set I saw him play against Federer. Just unleashed off everything, I know it's hard to keep up over a 5 set match but Federer is going to win around 70% of all normal baseline rallies.
4) Give the crowd something to cheer. I don't care how badly they behave, as long as they can help Andy and perhaps rattle Roger.
5) Have belief he can win. Too many times it seems he's gone into matches thinking he has no chance of beating Federer.

Explain how the rain robbed Andy? He had a game point, two of them in the game Roger broke in the 3rd set so do you mean to tell me that he was bothered by the delay at those game points? He also had a chance to break Roger and win in the breaker and he didn't. What makes you think Roger wouldn't have broken back in the 3rd set or win in the 5th set anyway?

Let's talk about Andy running off the court that year during a non-rain delay created by him to take Mario out of his form. Can to talk about that?

To win, Roger needs to bring a better level than he has brought most of this tournament because andy will try to look after his own serve much better than any other opponent that Roger's had so far. True Federer wins most of the final's he's in. That dosen't mean he always plays his best in GS finals. Earlier this year, Federer strugled to win the Australian open, and even though he beat Baghdatis in 4 sets, he did not play well in that Final. The same is true in the French open, where he lost to Nadal. In Wimbledon Federer played awsome, and deserved to win. However, last years U.S Open, Federer lost a set, and was a break down in the third (I believe), until he reacted and won that Open. Had Federer played well against agassi, in last years U.S Open final, Federer would have won in straight sets.

What im trying to get at, is that, its not true that Federer always plays the best in Finals, though this does not take away from the Fact that he wins 97% (made up, althought close) of the final's he plays.

It is not known, wether Federer will play his best in this Final, and Roddick is playing quite decently. So, having said that, I predict Federer will win in 4 sets. A straight sets win for Federer would be somewhat hard to believe, given the fact that Roddick is playing quite well. I fear for Roddick that this might not be enough, however, if Federer plays against Roddick, the same way he player against Blake, then it COULD be said that Roddick has a shot at winning it, though not in less than 5 sets...

Depends which Andy turns out tomorrow. If he plays attacking tennis like he did against JCF at Cincy then he's got a good chance - but otherwise Federer will win somewhat easily.
Win or lose I'm proud of what Andy's done at Cincy and the USO this year to turn his year around. :)

You haven't mentioned (what you think of) how andy plays in finals. Part of the result will depend on that as well. It isn't clear whether andy will play as well, better, or worse tomorrow than he has in his last few matches. So it isn't all up to Roger or what level he brings tomorrow

I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed when Federer beats Roddick. They keep talking about Roddick is on fire but the only top 5 player he played the last month, he lost (Blake). Yes he beat Hewitt, but Hewitt is not the same player he use to be, most people beat Hewitt these days (whereopun he use to lose only to Fed in major tournaments now Hewitt loses to anybody). Fed is not in a slump, he made the final of all the majors this year so this is nothing new.

I think it'll probably be a 4 setter...two tight sets with Andy possibly winning a tie break and then Roger will up the ante into full FINAL-MODE and Andy will start to fall apart as the furstration sets in. Roger's not going to be intimidated by any sideline antics that Connors may convince Andy to partake in, he's not going to be intimidated by Andy's serve and he's not going to be intimidated by Andy's attempts to come to net.

Andy's only hope is if Roger has a French Open-like meltdown, which is unlikely as it's a different match on a different surface without the extreme weather conditions. Or that Roger gets so bored out there that he looses concentration completely. Yet again something that's unlikely to happen.

Poor Andy...he finally gets to a Grand Slam final again and his nightmare is waiting for him there. It's life imitating art as Andy finds himself facing Pong...given Roger's computer like ability to get almost everything back.

I think Fed in five, actually. Roddick will push him a lot - he will know he has to go all out on his opponent's service games and that he needs to drive the ball deep and take command of the rally early. But I think Fed will probably come through in the end. That's if he serves well - his serve, for him, has been distinctly below par this entire tournament!
