Roddick was a bit rude with his "too big" comment but so what? As I say, he was in a bit of a dogfight there for heading towards three hours - he did not want to be out there that long when he'll have to play less than 24 hrs later. I can understand him being a bit frustrated and venting it a little. He's only human - people shouldn't judge him by ridiculous standards.

As for Misha - he was slowing down play too much and Roddick was in his rights to insist to the umpire that the receiver play at the server's pace.

It was a solid match from Andy for the most part but I thought in the fourth set he mostly abandoned his aggressive tactics and retreated to the back court and decided to outlast Youzhny from there. It worked, of course but it's an interesting sign when things get tough he goes back to that strategy. I don't think that's a good idea.

In any case, he's in the final which is a tremendous effort considering the year he's had - let's hope for a good final tomorrow.

Andy played really well in the sense that he did not buckle under pressure. He was able to do that by being more intelligent about his groundstrokes and serving well. Looking forward to a great final.

The rules are you play at the server's pace, and Misha was deliberately holding Roddick up every time he saw Andy prepare to serve.

Nadal takes his time serving but he doesn't try to interfere with his opponent's serve as Misha was trying to do.

I'm also surprised there so little attempt at objectivity - some of Roddick's fans blah blah about how Misha did that etc when they perhaps should also say Roddick was still a bit obnoxious with that (connors anyone?). Most everyone else is making him out to be the biggest shit in the world that Saint Youzhny did well to tolerate for so long.

roddick's comment was really not a big deal...he likes to comment a lot. it was his way of pumping himself up.

after one youzhny backhand, roddick said "how the hell does he hit so hard from that far back"

but with that said, andy does play fast, faster than most players on serve. so i thought his complaints about youzhny were not justified esp when youzhny really didnt take that long.

Look people will hate Roddick no matter what mainly cause =

One dimensional game + offensive on court attitude = hatas

If Roddick plays the way he does (serve/forehand) but had a humble attitude on court I doubt he would have as many haters. Same if he had a beautiful game but same attitude I think people would be more lenient towards him.

On that note, do the Anti-Roddicks REALLY want to see Roddick get totally crushed? No doubt they want him to lose, but wouldn't a close match be far more interesting tennis to watch? I still think Roddick's going to lose, but if Roddick is on his game it shouldn't be a runaway.

Well played by Andy, but he's going to have to take it up another level or two to challenge Roger. His serving (esp. later in the match) was excellent, but what happened to his return game from Cincinnati? And a low unforced error count was enough to the job done against Youzhny, but he's going to have to play much more aggressively to take the match from Federer. Hit the ball harder and deeper more consistently, and put that bh down the line to good use. In spite of the improvements he's made in his game, he really can't rely on outrallying Roger. He'll have to come in opportunistically, hit those groundstrokes with lots of pace and just generally step it up against Roger.

Certainly he has nothing left to prove and the crowd will be totally on his side, so hope it's an exciting final tomorrow.

See, that's the great irony of most of the Federer fans: they claim they want the other players to step up and give Roger a challenge but when someone does, they hate him for it (Nadal).

They also love to pretend that they are "real" tennis connosieurs because they drool over Roger's beautiful game so much but the fact that they would rather see Roger dominate players so easily in championship finals pretty much proves that they're not "real" tennis fans as much as they are Federer fans. :)

I think Andy could give Roger a run for his money. But right now I'm just so happy and excited to see the old Andy Roddick back into the thick of things and playing so well. :bounce: He's been slumping for so long, having such little confidence in himself, that he deserves all the good things that have been happening for him lately.

Unfortunately it's extremely unlikely that he'll come close to breaking Federer's serve, even if he plays well (that'll make Fed's service games boring).
A longer match would mean more unreturnable/barely-returnable serves ending with forehand put-away. Boring too.

It came down to simple #:

Misha had many more unforced errors than Roddick

Roddick 1st serve % on the first set was 55%
It was 70+% for each of the other sets.

I say that's pretty much it. Can't believe how often Roddick got passed. His slice approach is too weak crosscourt. Connors needs to teach him to hit a hard backhand from the forecourt.

If Roddick was rattled by Youzhny, wonder how he'll react when he plays Nadal.

Jimmy Connors has been good for Andy. Not sure how good coaching Andy is for Jimmy though - he was clutching that railing pretty hard and I'm sure there's grey hair at the front that wasn't there at Wimbledon. Seriously! :p

Congrats to Roddick, he played well.

The "too big" comment was really blown out of proportion by the haters.

This is old news, but I love the way Youzhny got the crowd on his side when he was 3 matchpoints down.

Youzhny = Personality!

Yeah, that was cute. He was smiling and loose. But, he knew the writing was on the wall.
