Federer wants to face Roddick if he reaches final

Roger Federer admits he would favour a high-profile showdown with home favourite Andy Roddick in Sunday's US Open men's final.

The world number one first faces a tricky encounter with Nikolay Davydenko this evening, the Russian who accounted for Andy Murray in the last 16.

Roddick must come through a meeting with another Russian, Mikhail Youzhny,

to set up the final Federer has in mind.

The Swiss star said: "(I'd) probably like to play Andy, I guess. We look like the big favourites but we've seen what happens to favourites sometimes, so we've got to be very careful.

"I've had some tough matches with Davydenko, so I'm very well aware of that."

Federer, who reached the last four by beating American James Blake in the quarter-finals, believes Davydenko is a player who has made major strides in recent times.

"I think he is playing excellent tennis. He has proved he has really improved a lot on hard courts. We all knew he could play on clay and everything," Federer added.

"He is similar to James, all of a sudden he kind of found another gear, more confidence from the baseline. He is also incredibly fit, he never breaks down and has much bigger belief now than he used to have.

"Every part of his game has kind of improved because his serve was pretty dodgy, was switching from one racquet to the next, not sure exactly how to play and everything. All of a sudden he's found his game."

Davydenko felt all the pressure would be on Federer on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court this evening.

"If Federer reaches the semi-final he thinks 'I need to win the US Open', because he is number one, he won already here.

"For me, I have achieved my best result by making the semi-final? I just need to come to the court and have fun and not be nervous for the semis."

Because Andy is such a nice guy. ;)

Seriously though, if Andy wins, I hope Roger is as gracious in defeat as Andy was after those two Wimbledon finals.

Well Andy usually has his runners-up speech already written and rehearsed before facing Roger in a final, so you can understand why Roger would want to face him

You indicated that about Roddick's chances against Hewitt. Is the era of serve dominated tennis about to cast a dark cloud again over tennis. Can the tennis player beat the serving machine.

If Fed and Roddick play, the winner will have to go to the after match press conference and answer questions in German, French and English.

If Roddick blows as quickly as he serves, he'd last less time than Nadal takes in between points.

Roddick's tennis is incredibly effective and brutal. I think most underestimate his chances. On this aspect I am amazed how many do not recognise this fact.

But then some on this board think Roddick plays more interesting tennis than Federer.   But as they winning is what counts, not how interesting or beautiful your tennis.

They may have played 3 times at Wimbledon and Federer won, but this is the US Open. The crowd at Wimbledon are much more in tune with the behaviour, conduct and attitude of Federer. At the US Open the crowd are much more in tune with the behaviour, conduct and attitude of Roddick. In a way each well define the respective crowds.

I'd love to see Andy win the whole thing, but he DOES have a horrible habit of accepting defeat when he's playing Roger. THe way Andy's been playing, I think he can actually give Roger a run for it - IF he believes he has a chance of winning, that is. Otherwise it will be just as much of a snooze-fest as always.

Dirk

They have meet three times indoors and the indoor courts are faster than USO so Roger won't be losing here. The crowd will be out of this match once Roger takes the first set therefore they won't be a factor.

Merton
09-09-2006, 03:17 PM
Roger will be the overwhelming favourite, there is no doubt about that. However, I always felt that Andy's best chance would be in the North American hard courts, where he scored his one win out of 4 matches.

rofe
09-09-2006, 03:20 PM
Actually Roger has been a little shaky and Andy has been confident. If he can feed off the energy of the crowd and execute an aggresive gameplan like he did against Hewitt then Andy has a good chance of causing an upset.

Roger hasn't played Andy in a long time so he will have trouble reading Andy's serve initially so Andy's best chance is to take advantage of that and keep the pressure up in the 1st set. If Andy loses the 1st, I don't think he will win the match.

This is all hypothetical of course. There are two other players that have other ideas about the final.

Yes. Hard to see him winning elsewhere without the crowd.

actually it would be nice if Roger loses in the Finals, no matter if it's against Youzhny or Roddick. 2 GS Titles and 1 GS Final are more than enough.

Of course Roger wants to play the final against Andy! that's because he's sure that he can beat him...as for Youzhny...he doesn't know what to expect of him, he could be more dangerous! :o :o :o Andy has been playing great tennis at this USO, but his head doesn't help him when he plays Federer...of course I'd like Andy to win but...the chances that happens are very slim in my opinion!

I think I have seen enough of Roddick's matches to know what to expect. If he starts hitting like 10-15 backhand down the line winners, then you may have something. They have to meet first, if they do, the H2H will increase in Fed's favour.

I wish I had your guys' confidence. I'm so nervous about this match that I can't even watch it. Well I'm working tomorrow so I can't catch it anyway...but I don't think I'll even be peeking in on my breaks. I don't dislike Roddick the way I dislike Nadal but I find his game boring. Ace after ace after ace after ace.

Fed cannot underestimate the roddick and connors combo or the crowd factor. I really hope he doesn't choke.

Good luck Roger! I hope it's a great match!

Well, there's something in it for Roger as well if andy plays- - which is, a crowd that is into it, keeping a great energy level, and good ratings all over which will also bring him into many more homes. The crowd, as rambunctious as it has been, has not been nasty (EVEN the J Block), and it is not 100% one-sided. And there's the matter with the H2H as well
