Does Davydenko have any friends?

Ok now this is a serious question and not just an attempt at a cheap shot (well, maybe a little one.....)

- He never has more than 2 people in his box, and one is his brother/coach.

- I know you get the little groups on tour, the Spaniards seem to hang together, and the Argies. But you get the feeling Safin might be a bit cool for him

- He has about as much personality as a plank of wood.

- He's bald, ugly, and from Ukraine :scared:

- He's like a robot. He doesn't talk, doesn't show any emotion or do anything apart from bash balls away at the back of a tennis court.

So the question has to be asked, does anyone know if he has any friends?

I'm not a particular fan of Davydenko but after his great effort today I'd feel a bit of an asshole to take a swipe at him now - he was very impressive.

So I'll wait, and respond tomorrow :)

Nah...as long as he's happy with his life who am I to criticise?

Allow me to manipulate the question a little? how many friends 'll he have if he reaches the final this year? ;)

But to answer ur question, he just seems to be a quiet person, this doesn't mean he has no friends. At least i think so.

adee-gee you bet he has more friends than you think.

why should a tennis player have tons of people he doesn't need. to show off?

he's bald but not ugly though not a raw model in anyways but he's ok.

he's certainly not a robot but not that much expressive. i don't see what's wrong with this.

he doesn't speak much or at least he's not the first pick to have an interview with. the guy barely spreaks english. ok, it's weird that he has not put enough effort into learning it but his idea is to earn his bread with his raquet not his tongue and obviously it's how he is.

why do you care about his personality? isn't it about tennis? the guy plays solid and enjoyable tennis imho and that's what matters.

federer is a bit more expressive but not that much, for sure he's more public person but hey, fed is from Switzerland not from Russia.

i guess they get along pretty well with Marat. Why shouldn't they? there's a much better probability that Marat would prefer to hang out with Davy than with Roger.

The number of people in the box gives absolutely no indication of how many friends a player has. I think it's great to see two brothers working together, and his brother/coach has just the right attitude, even smiling if things haven't quite worked out. And Nikolay's girlfriend is there. Who else does he need? There's lots to admire about his work ethic, and his groundstrokes are excellent. He comes across as a thoroughly decent guy, shy maybe, totally focused on his tennis and good luck to him.

Not sure about Henin given his face does not seem like a perpetual breeding ground for herpes. Having taken my cheap shot at Henin: hell yes he's cute. Great skin, lithe little bod and very unassuming personality. The wispy hair really is unfortunate (he should keep it close cropped because once it's gone it's gone). He is destined to be reviled and belittled by pin head tennis fans whose experience of tennis is restricted to watching it on TV. Those of us who actually play recognize what a good player he is and those of who are even more discerning recognize that he is, in his own way, sort of a fox.

Davydenko has a number of things going against him in the MTF popularity contest:

(1)He has a consistent, not flashy game

(2)He's starting to bald

(3)most importantly, he wasn't a big sexy prospect coming up. He wasn't a top junior. He was around the 100s when he was 20, but didn't move up into the top half of the top 100 until a few years later. We have legions of Murray fans, JMDP fans, Djokovic fans, Cilic fans, et al who can say "I'm not a bandwagoner, I was a fan since I heard of this young talent when he was ranked outside the top 200!!!!". Davydenko never benefitted from the "young gun bandwagon effect". Interestingly enough, the two other very unpopular players in the top 10, Ljubicic and Stepanek also fit this pattern.

Davydenko is friends with the Russian guys.

I do remember reading that Marat and him are good friends. Didn't Marat watch his games at the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai last year (I distinctly remember Marat being there during one of his matches).

Davydenko and Igor Andreev have been doubles partners for a while now (at least before Andreev got injured). So I guess him and Andreev are good friends.

And if you read Tursunov's very first blog entry, he said something about going out to dinner with Davydenko and eating a lot of fish (if I remember correctly).

I couldn’t take it anymore so I went to dinner with Davydenko to a really good seafood restaurant on a small street not too far from our hotel. The fish was really good and for me being more of a fish eater this means that I will be eating at this restaurant for the rest of the week!!! Also, apart from that J Block thing, players do not always have that many people in the stands: coach/trainer/whatever employee and family/girlfriend.
Some players pay a coach to have some company, and not be lonely on the tour (marat for ex). Are they lacking friends? Your friends have a life, stuff to do, you know.

How in the world would he have time to make friends. He plays a tournament EVERY week. Who knows, maybe he likes to hang out with the ball kids or chair umpires...

Ok now this is a serious question and not just an attempt at a cheap shot (well, maybe a little one.....)

Hahahahahaha.

He's in his mid 20s and has thinning hair. :haha:

He's lived in germany since he was in his late teenage years. He speaks Russian, German, and English

I like Davydenko, i think he's ok but i agree he seems to be a bit too committed on the whole tennis front, i mean he does need a life outside of it, everyone does! If it's the money then i can't blame him but he doesn't seem to have any time off to spend it!!

And I think his brother is quite hot!

Davydenko is a loner on the tour I've heard. No wonder with his character that no ones really likes him. You rarely see him smiling.

Rios? Explain.

Well viewing the poll it seems ppl DONT think he is a loner, maybe its just the language barrier

1 thing though as a player he is one of the most consistant players on the tour,a fighter

I saw a gang of Russian players strolling along & chatting the Sunday before USO opening. The group consisted of the following players:

Tursunov, Safin, Davydenko, Youzhny, and two other players I didn't recognize.

So looks like the Russians do hang out with each other~

maybe they were trying to fix something up :aplot:

He has friends and he has a life - he lives and breathes tennis. So you knockers go get a life and see if you can even reach one bit of the success he has before you say anything else.

Davidenko is all business, no bullshit. what's not to like about this guy? geting to the semis without losing a set, screw djokovic if (and thats a big IF) he beats Roger in the final, I will put my money on Davi to win the whole thing.

Match fixing bettors?

Then again for you someone to be interesting, has to be either American, successful, screm a lot on court and have funny expression.

Here is a great friend of Davydenko.

Davydenko sees tennis as work; very highly paid in his case, but requiring massive input from him to maintain his high level. There are a sizeable number of people, often high earners, whose lives are focused on work. He will probably retire in his early 30's and be financially comfortable for life, able to pursue whatever interests he has. Possibly he does not have enough time outside tennis to develop friendships.

well, the german commentator on eurosport just said in his last match against haas that he (davydenko) is a loner on tour like the williams sisters.
