Hard: Roddick leads 2-1
Grass: Youzhny leads 1-0
Slams: Roddick leads 1-0

Who is Mikhail Youzhny? He's a 24-year-old Russian with a killer backhand and more than a passing resemblance to Justin Timberlake. After a number of fourth-round appearances in Grand Slams, he has achieved a career breakthrough.

Almost all the spectators were for Rafa," Youzhny said. "I understand … he is No. 2 in the world. But I was really, really glad during the match when a lot of the people started to say, 'Misha, Misha.' They call 'You, You, You,' because Youzhny is too tough for [them]. --ESPN

Sure why not? If Youzhny can neutralize Roddick's serve I think he has a shot. And of course he himself must do a good job serving.

My mind says Roddick, but my gut says Youzhny.

Roddick has been in great form since winning in Cincinnati. He's the seeded player with a slam win under his belt.

Youzhny has been under the radar but has defeated the Top 3 Spaniards in great form. Remembered mostly for his historic 2002 Davis Cup win over France.

Roddick, this year, has been severely criticized by so many people about his game and has been in some sort of slump until Cincinnati.

Youzhny has been criticized for never living up to his full potential, especially after that sensational Davis Cup win. He's also experienced personal tragedy in his life, his father dying suddenly months before his Davis Cup win (I think he alluded that his "salute" after the Nadal win was dedicated to his father).

Here's their Head-to-Head

Tied 2-2

2001 London / Queen's Club

2005 ATP Masters Series Cincinnati
Ohio, USA Hard Q Roddick 2-6 6-3 6-4

Youzhny won the first two matches, Roddick the last two (although both matches went the distance).

Again, while I think that Roddick has the game to take down Youzhny, I feel Youzhny will win this. I have that feeling that this is one of those times where the stars are aligning for Youzhny to take this.

Youzhny in 4.

I don't see it. Mikhail might be able to sneak out a set at best, but with Roddick's performance he put on tonight I'd heavily favor him in the match. Roddick plays completely different than Nadal. He doesn't play the offensively defencive style of play. PLus Roddick has a serve, something Nadal desperately lacks :o.

HAH, a Federer - Youhzny Final would be insane. Federer would win, but I believe it would not help the American viewers if Youhzny reaches the final, I mean, quite frankly, its difficult to imagine him in the final let alone win it...

Youzhny can definitely do it, with the level he's been playing at this tournament. I hope it doesn't happen though :D

I think Roddick will win. Sure, Youzhny has been playing great, but Roddick has been serving great as well. Off the ground, Roddick is also playing fantastic, so the question is, will Youzhny have much chance on Roddick's serve? I would think not, while Roddick will definitely have chances on Youzhny's serve.

Roddick wins, Youzhny takes a set at best.

Has anybody else noticed that this could be a preview to the Davis Cup semi-final?
I mean why couldn't Youzhny be picked ahead of Marat?

Not that I want it to happen but, lets be honest, Marat's year (especially his clay season) has been a disaster.

Roddick in 3. He's just serving so big right now, playing so confident, and has excellent consistancy with both forehand and his newfound 2-handed up the line backhand. No knock to Youzhny, he's playing great right now, but I think Roddick is an entirely different challenge.

If he believes he can and doesn't let the occasion get the better of him, then anything can happen.

At the same time Youzhny did win the last match in the DC final to give Russia the title, this time he is on his own and he blew that match in Australia, when he had Roddick on the ropes.

Davydenko-Youzhny final would be great for tennis.

Man, will I root hard for Misha in this one? If he can get Roddick into rallies and get anywhere near his performance against Nadal, he should wipe out Andy. But I think Roddick will dominate with his serve, he has gotten loads of confidence after beating one of his nemesis the Potato.

If Misha doesn´t let the big occasion get into his head, of course he can win this match, Roddick has a big edge in the service department but Misha has weapons good enough to dismantle him from baseline, should be a close match, I´d say it goes to five sets

I certainly would love that since the crowd at the US Open this year have tended to be a rather crude and repugnant collection of people with few redeeming qualities.

If it was just a few matches it would be one thing, but there have been so many like it this week. And the J Block have the behaviour of a group of escaped convicts from a penitentiary.

Stranger things have happened.

I would dismiss Mikhail chances here,
but I'm certain most will.

As for helping "American viewers"
oh well. That's up to the American players
to fullfill whatever it is American may want
to and will tune in to see.

I think Mikhal will reach the finals beating Roddick in 4
before losing to Roger in the finals.

If that happens the crowd's attention will focus on harrassing the ballgirls, like what I hear happened at the Gasquet/Hewitt match. The crowd was so ruthless at that match, the officials had to switch the ball girl.

However, I think that the crowd that can afford Finals tickets will be a better lot.

Yeah...that was...interesting. After guys in the audience kept whistling at the ball girl, some ladies in the audience started whistling at the ball boys. I felt sorry for the poor ball girl.

Also during the match, some drunken tools were chanting "USA! USA!" while Hewitt and Gasquet were involved in a great match.

I was at a match some years ago between Arazi and Alami at the US Open and Jennifer Capriati sat in the row in front of us and was cheering Go Andre  I was embarrased because it was on the Grandstand court and they could hear. They played a hell of a match and the american fans were impressed even though Jen was pretty ignorant.

Depends on 3 factors:
1) How he reads & returns AR's serve
2). He's been on court ~ 2x as long as AR (w/doubles included), so who knows how spent he is, physically & emotionally. Will he have a big crash after taking out #2 Singles & #1 doubles seeds in one day?
3) Is he ready to play this deep into a major & on enemy territory, as the crowd is guaranteed to be obnoxious & of course Connors will talk to AR about encouraging the boorishness...

I hope Misha turns the one-dimensional clod into kitty litter :)
And if match took 4-5 hrs, so Roger, who hopefully prevails in his semi, is the most rested in the finals, that's even more important :)

Adler

Youzhny's got better all-court play, so if only he could return the monstrous serve, everyting should be OK unless he becomes too tired to compete at a certain level, which is very likely to happen
