Terrific performance from Roddick

Served well, returned well, confident groundies, even looked decent at the net at times.

The 2 games he played from 5-5 in the 2nd set were absolutely sick.

Good luck against Youzhny, great chance to reach the final :yippee:

Well worth staying up till 4.40am to watch :p

Um..... WOW. Even I'm impressed :worship:.

He totally crushed Hewitt. Had he not had that loose game early in the second it would have been much easier. This is easily the best match Roddick has played in a Slam since um........... probably vs Tojo at last year's Wimbledon. Nicely done Andy, evening up the h2h as it really shouldn't be that lop sided.

Hewitt did well at this event. Came into it with question marks and played himself into some decent form here and really had to work hard to beat Gasquet the night before.

Go Andy all the way!!

Well, it's really sad to see Hewitt like this. Hewitt played a good match but the fact of the matter is that not only Federer has overtaken him, but now Nadal, Roddick, Bag. and Nalbandian have all overtaken him...

I don't know what's wrong with him. No fire, didn't challenge anything in the tourney up until the 3rd set today, no 'cmawns... the only energy he gave off was being mad at himself in the 3rd set. It's sad, but I think that clearly, his passion for tennis is less than what it used to be.

It's like he got one of his balls castrated.

Oh well, Andy's backhand has improved, though. No excuses. It's too bad Hewitt hasn't added much to his game since he beat Roddick in 2001. A little more power, and I think he got a little bit slower, so it's a wash.

It was pretty obvious that Hewitt, of all people, was fatigued in this match. He didn't seem to be there mentally either. Has anyone ever seen Hewitt so subdued in a match? Not one single "c'mon" or anything the entire match. I never thought I would see that happen. He was getting into it in that 3rd set with the challenges, but by then it was too late.

Andy . Perfect match play, never gave Hewitt a sniff at even winning a set. Fabulous match.
Hewitt didn't exactly play a fabulous match either, you know.
Hewitt did well to get as far as he did, but I expected him to be into the match more than he was. He had no energy or fire in the match whatsoever; that's not like Hewitt. He didn't dig deep down like he usually does.

Andy better calm down in order not to have a letdown.
He had that look on his face at the end of the match, that expression of disbelief in victory circa 2003 US Open final. He almost broke into tears!
I know he was happy to beat Hewitt and all, but he hasn't won the tournament yet! Mentally this victory was enormous for him so I hope for his sake he that he can recharge again. I would rather have Andy in the final than Youzhny, that's for sure.

This result was no surprise. Based on form alone, Andy's been solid these past few matches compared to Lleyton.

That is what is known as a hiding and you know it's Roddick's day when he is hitting that many backhand down the line winners.

One reason why Hewitt didn't play well, it's not hard to fathom cause Roddick didn't let him play well and finally he beat Hewitt in a big match.

Roddick is the one on the right.

Masterful display from Rod, even on the big points, where Hewitt had always wore him down in the past.... he was all over Lleyton, Hewitt always looked likely to be the one that broke down.

in not puting him in the final yet though as Misha has always gave him problems and played the match of his life to take out jungle boy :D

scoobs
09-07-2006, 09:45 AM
Yep - Hewitt got his ass kicked for him - hugely impressive from Andy Roddick.

Youzhny should give him a good match but though Youzhny was impressive against Rafa, Roddick's not going to have him the same types of chance to heat clean winners and I think Roddick will wear him down fairly comfortably.

And on that form, assuming Roger makes the final, I think he could give Roger a real test. That assumes he plays as he has done, though, I doesn't try to do too much because Roger is down the other end, of course.

Hewitt didn't play that well.

He gave that game away in the first set. In the second and 3rd Hewitt picked his level up but he still missed a number of clutch Hewitt shots. i.e. lobs, backhands, passing shots. Roddick played well however and I don't think I have ever seen him hit his backhand that well either. He really controlled play with it. At points when it look like he would have run around his bh and give up court he hit down the line or off-backhands with some real pop. Still Hewitt faltered on the big moments and he was clearly pissed about that, to Roddick's credit he played really well all match and never faltered with stupid mistakes. Great performance by Andy and sub-par/average performance by Hewitt. I don't know I think maybe if Hewitt had gotten one of those sets, or one of those breaks and the match got closer we may have seen his level rise. Oooohhh well, Andy always has a tough time against Youzhny. So that should be a good match.

Other than the game Hewitt gave away in the first set, Roddick earned his breaks by using very good defense and good hitting off of both wings.

Roddick hit 5 clean DTL BH winners in that match. He also hit 4 that were unreturned and a few more that drew very short balls. Hewitt was quite puzzled. In fact, Roddick hit DTL BH winners in all of the games he broke or games right before he borke which really had Hewitt confused.

Roddick probably hit that many good BH's aggregately in all of his previous matches against Hewitt. Hewitt didn't know what to do. I remember him looking up and over at Roddick after the last BH dtl winner as if to say, "What is going on? Who are you?" Hewitt could not hit through Roddick since he doesn't have the power and the usual gameplan of hit to the BH was not drawing any errors or short balls and on occasion was losing him points when Roddick hit a screamer dtl. His FH is still not quite as potent as in his heyday in 2003/2004, but it is close while the rest of his game was better than ever.

tangerine_dream
09-07-2006, 02:45 PM
Hewitt didn't play that well.
Of course he didn't. Andy wouldn't let him. :D He took a lot of pace off the balls, which Hewitt hates, and that's why he kept dumping them into the net. Andy executed his gameplan beautifully. Hewitt could not muster even one "c'moooon!" Andy finally removed the bulls-eye target from himself that Hewitt loved so much.

Pigpen Stinks
09-07-2006, 03:15 PM
Thoroughly brilliant performance. Never would have expected him to put everything together like that. The down the line backhands as GWH mentioned, and the defense as NYC Fan mentioned were particularly impressive. When Andy's playing well, I think his defensive ability is very underrated. I even thought he looked reasonably comfortable at net.

One question. I watched most of the match without the volume down as I was on the phone. Did the commentators mention anything about Hewitt's knee? I'm not suggesting it would have made any difference because Roddick was clearly the superior player last night. However, it seemed that Hewitt was kind of slow getting to balls on his forehand side, particularly whenever Andy hit behind him.

One other thought. I really doubt Blake can beat Fed, but imagine if it was a Blake-Davydenko, Roddick-Youzhny semi line-up. Not that Davy and Youzhny would necessarily be the two singles starters, but it would be pretty ironic considering the upcoming Davis Cup tie.
