What's going on? Is this at all due to injury? I can only see the scoreboard because I'm at work, and I am shocked. I didn't realize Youzhny had this in him, but I didn't catch the Robredo match either, which also surprised me. Can anyone watching fill us in?

Nadal was clearly outplayed today, and what was interesting much with his own tactics. Youzhny was moonballing himself alot and did not go for winners whenever Raffa expected and left the court oppened. That confused Raffa, he had much less cheap points on opponents mistakes. He had to construct the game himself, and that is what won Youzhny this tight match. It is so good that he showed how mediocre Raffa is in actively constructing points.

There are so many threads about this . . . honestly, it's tennis, people lose!

Only one person can win this USO, I don't see everyone making tons of threads everytime a player loses, apart from in Nadals case.

09-07-2006, 12:53 AM
It was only a matter of time. James Blake established the blueprint. Prior to Youhzny, only Lee (in a loss) and Berdych (in a win) had followed suit.

On a fast court with lighter balls, dictate play by crowding the baseline and hitting deep and flat to Nadal's (overswing) forehand. His topspin isn't much of a factor on these (USO) courts with these (Wilson) balls. Nadal simply needs more time for his strokes. Much to P-Mac's dismay, Youzhny was an excellent match-up for Nadal for these reasons.

Since the changes to the courts and balls at Wimby, of the four slams, the USO now plays the quickest due to the combination of the balls and the courts.

according to deivid it is being completely smashed...

he thinks rafa "schooled" federer every time on clay, when in reality it was probably a little close. tie break in the fourth set, thats close for me.

What I have noticed is that while Rafa, and I am a HUGE fan, seems to always have trouble "closing the deal" in sets and matches...he usually wins, but has trouble serving for sets, matches, and clinching at times...For example, serving for the French title...broken, serving for the second set at Wimbledon...broken, serving for the second set against Novak in the 4th Round of he Open...broken...

Usually, he is not broken, but ends up having to face a 15-30 or 30-30 all game...His style of play never really allows for cheap points at these stages, and I think that hurts him from time to time...like today

I went to the Open today, and for me, because Safin and Rafa lost, it was the worst day for me in the history of attending a sporting event live...

 at thread title...

Nothing wrong with Rafa, he has played worse and still gotten the win but this time he needed to be really on top and never got there. Youzny played superb and had great tactics. Rafa could never dominate , and he lost the plot when he didn't feel sure about the win.

Oops my bad.

Edit: Nadal lost cause he's a defensive moonballer who will be beaten by nobodies (like this guy Youzhny) in every nonclay tournie he enters.

Poor Rafa

Did anyone else notice how, when the players were at the net and shaking hands, that Rafa was a gracious loser and was trying to talk to Youzhny, and Youzhny wasn't even paying attention. He had his hands on his hips and was already walking towards the umpire. Thought that was a bit arrogant and rude.

Now, Roddick should just kick Youzhny's ass!
