I was only watching a scoreboard but it seems like a pretty decent performance by Federer. Stepping it up when he had to in the second and third sets.

I was watching the scoreboard as well and looks like Gicquel played quite well to keep it close. 15 aces from Roger so seems like his serve was clicking.

Yeah, Federer upped his performance at the right time. I was watching the scoreboard, and at 3-3 in the 3rd set, Giquel blew away two breakpoints, and after that Fed just finished him off like he does with all his opponents.

Gicquel took the second set to a tiebreaker pretty easily. He must've played okay at least.

Federer has a lot of work to do if he is to get past Tomas/Blake and Haas/Davydenko.

Did anyone catch the match in full, or at least a couple sets? How did the players play?

Gicquel managed to go to the tie-break against Federer. The Frenchman won 12 games in 3 sets. Federer made a lot of errors. It's the beginning of an end of Roger Federer. He will lose the next match and what is more he won't win any ATP title anymore. He'll drop to about 1000th place in the rank next year

Fed played Gicquel for the first time.

Federer has a lot of work to do if he is to get past Tomas/Blake and Haas/Davydenko.I didn't see the match but Roger has yet to drop a set in the tournament. So he can't be playing that poorly (I have seen very little of his matches). He never played this guy before and it's not unusual for him to struggle against guys he's never played. Like his opening round match at FO.

2nd match in a row without losing serve. So far lost serve 2 times and one of those was when leading 5-0 in a set.

The last time Roger played really really well was Wimbledon. After 2 tournaments and mid way through a slam I'd hoped he'd be smoking players like Gicquel. The players left in the draw are going to me a lot tougher and I hope he's up for it. ;)

I'm optimistic, I watched the game today and he played all right. Didn't make many unforced errors. etc.
I think you can't exactly compare Wimbledon to the U.S. can you? :p

Federer has been pretty efficient so far in this tournmanent. He has cruised through to the last 8 without hitting his best form. His serve also looking rock solid. Very encouraging stuff. With Safin out, he's now basically guaranteed a place in the final.

Quietly efficient, solid enough, thank you very much.

QFs next.

The activity in this thread clearly shows how shocked we all are at this result. :tape:I know--he was taken to a tiebreak!

He seems to struggle a little at the US open, but he always finds a way. Look at last year. It was no walk through the park.

we al know how roger plays in the later rounds of a slam. blake, haas/davy may not be a walkthrough, but i'm sure fed will pull through
