Favorite Matches in USO 06 (so far)...

What are your fave matches (men's/women's) in USO?

For me, given that we don't have a tennis channel and bcoz of the difference in timezones, I only get to watch the big & impt matches. They are (not in any order):

1. Agassi vs Baghdatis - I actually consider this as Agassi's last match in his career. It's sad to think of him ending his career w/ that disappointing match against Becker, so this one w/ Baghdatis is a lot more special and meaningful for me.

2. Nalbandian vs Safin - What more can I say about this match? It's between 2 of my fave players and from the get-go, it's hard to choose who will win bcoz it was a very tight match till the very end. A TB to end the match was nerve-racking and it could easily have gone either player's way.

3. Hewitt vs Gasquet - I think the point of the tourney comes from this match, courtesy of Gasquet on Hewitt's 2nd MP. Although, Gasquet lost this one, he has gained the respect and admiration of a few more fans, and so I'm happy for him in that respect.

* Do I love 5-set matches or what! :D *

4. Mauresmo vs Williams - Finally, Amelie has beaten Serena again. Even w/ Serena's troubles & Amelie's recent successes in GS, I think Amelie was still the underdog coming into this match. What a comeback from that embarrassing 2nd set! Goes to show that she has really matured mentally.

That's it for now. I may add another fave match again after the Safin-Haas and Hewitt-Roddick match. ;)

Agassi-Baghdatis, Hewitt-Gasquet, Nalbandian-Safin, Murray-Gonzalez and Haas-Ginepri have all been great spectacles, all 5 setters and all with their dramas and tense moments. There's been some great tennis this tournament when the heavens have allowed it.

I have found this the best grand slam so far for quite a few years, the other 3 slams this year were awfully boring on the whole. There have been endless great matches during this slam, and loads of great 5 set matches too. I hope this doesnt stop, because I have really loved this usopen (apart from the damn rain).

Some of my favourite matches:
Gasquet - Hewitt
Agassi - Pavel
Agassi - Baghdatis
Nalb - Safin
Muzza - Gonzo
Acasuso - Paradorn
Blake - Moya
Horna - Nadal

So far I have recorded and kept those 8 matches, the past few grandslams I have only bothered to keep about 2 matches at the most because the matches have been so boring.

I guess having the interactive service really helps too, although most of the good matches have been on the main court anyway

Agassi - Baghdatis is the highest standard of tennis in this US OPEN. Nobody else has played at this level yet and I doubt anyone will.

Of the ones I've been able to see,

Andre vs Marcos,
Andre vs Pavel
Horna vs Nadal
Hewitt vs Gasquet (and I don't even like either of them  )
and Amelie vs Serena (women are deep enough into the open now to have some good matches too. )

Hewitt-Gasquet was above i thought (less UEs and as many spectacular points as in the match you mentionned....not to mention it contained the point of the tournament so far  ) but Agassi-Baghdatis was great too yeah :)

Kubot-Okun was the most entertaining match I've seen this year, although it didn't exactly display the highest standard of tennis.

I agree, however, don't underestimate 2005 USO. It was equally exciting throughout (perfect weather) and featured even more 5 setters.

Agassi-Bagdatis (5th set was just classic stuff from both players and it was Andre's last hurrah).

Hewitt-Gasquet (Richie was so cute when he hit those winners to save match points, then started cramping)

Nalbandian-Safin (that 5-set tiebreak almost gave me a heart attack)

By default, I must say.... Roddick df Hewitt.

1. Roddick df'd Hewitt.
2. I enjoyed Roddicks game and think I might end up as a fan (I am thinking it more than I thought before  )
3. The only other match...I got cable today  is Youzhny vs Nadal, and it looks like a bit of a doozy.

All of Agassi's matches...the first two because the tennis was great and the last one because I was there and the atmosphere was absolutely amazing. I'll never forget it...

Roddick/Hewitt was good just because Andy proved that he's back...

Gasquet/Hewitt was very exciting at the end

Two Nigerian guys on the ITF circuit. Toyin Dairo has a grand total of one ATP point, while Babalola is ranked in the 700s. You sure do have to travel a lot to cut it as an African tennis player though - not a lot of tournaments there.

mine is Federer vs. Blake... I was there for it and the level of play was just so high from both players... There were so many spectacular shots from both of them. I actually consider this to be the best match I have ever seen live and I had great seats...

I have just noticed that out of all our favorite matches of the USO 06, only one has cited a FedEx match (def Blake) as his favorite. What does that exactly say about the world # 1? In everyone's opinion, he is more than likely to win this USO and yet, his matches generate the least bit excitement w/ the fans. Yes, he's that good that no one can get close enough to him to have an exciting match (exception w/ Nadal) but still, if he's the world # 1 and he's winning everything everywhere, his matches has yet to reach a maximum level of intensity.

Obviously, this post is coming from a FedEx basher. :wavey:

LOL :yeah: agreed ... the Blake match was entertaining, I have to say. I hate Blake, so I was actually starting the match rooting for Federer for once, but by the end of the match, I was rooting for Blake because he was keeping it so exciting and I just didn't want it to end! It was refreshing.

That's because up till the match against Blake all his matches were straight setters in which he cruised to victory. ;) His matches do generate excitment with the crowd. He is probably the biggest non-American crowd filler in the tournament apart from Sharapova.

RODDICK/Hewitt.

I've never enjoyed a match more than that one.

judging by the highlights,i would say it was a decent match....but not a fantastic one
Roddick certainly didn t impress me with his baseline play(Hewitt generally dominated him there),his shots generally lacked strenght (perhaps a tactic?) and he rarely made any winners(apart a few ones with surprinsingly his backhand) but obviously his serve was on fire so....

I respect your opinion but in defense of ARod.......

In just a few weeks of work, five-time Open champion Connors has given Roddick a ton of confidence, in addition to encouraging him to be more aggressive. Roddick pounded 17 aces against Hewitt, considered the game's top returner, and compiled a 46-28 edge in winners.
