How many times has play been suspended so far?

I don't mind rain, but not when it keeps on postponing tennis matches :rain:

lol Naldo, yea, I like it sometimes because it grows food for me, and gives me water so I can stay alive and that's pretty cool. Not living isn't cool, so I guess rain is ok! I just wish it wouldn't rain and screw up tennis is all I mean. I think play was cancelled 3 times today, and how many times yesterday. I wanna keep track of this.

Yeah rain disrupting play really blows. Other than that I like rain, I think I might go outside and have a rain dance, seeing as there's no tennis on anymore.:)

I hate the rain, and I hate the way the schedulers deal with it. Starting matches at 1pm on show courts and 12pm elsewhere, on days when rain is forecast, is incredibly myopic. But they do it every year. :mad:

The rain is really beginning to make me upset. I mean, like it's all a part of the tournament, but when it starts interrupin important matches and pushing the tournament back, it does a lot of harm, because eventually the players will more than likely eventually play multiple matches in single days just to catch up. They even, supposedly (I didn't notice a change), cut down on the doubles and mixed draws in order to make enough margain for rain.

I do agree that the AELTC could be a bit more flexible with the scheduling though - 1.00pm is FAR too late for a Show Court start when this weather has been forecast here for a long while now. People are queuing for the Show Courts overnight and gates already open at 9.30am, so there wouldn't be a shortage of people to fill the seats for a 10.00am start - the only ones that would be missing would be the corporate hospitalily guests - and that would be a shame wouldn't it :p

God please, redirect all the rain that is planning to set camp at London's suburb called Wimbledon for the fortnight to 25 degrees North, 55 degress East. The location is about 90 km north of the Tropic of Cancer in the middle of the +4 Time Zone. The destination is called Dubai UAE, or to be more precise Sharjah (that's 4 km North East East of Dubai). If the rain water will be delivered by airplanes and them sprinkled I recomend using the Dubai International Airport for landing (airport code is DXB). Alternate airport will be Sharjah International, but it's not as modern and is further away from me.
Anyway, my situation with rain is desperate. There hasn't been a decent shower for two years now. Plus, its very hot now, today the temperature reached 45 degrees C and is expected to rise. Please bring more rain. As you can see this is not a completely selfish act: many people in here would appreciate rain and people will watch Wimbledon without interuptions. Ofcourse I would be among those people in both cases.

I like tennis outdoors, so I'm not going to complain about rain. It's just part of the deal. It's been raining at Wimbledon for a hundred years. It's ok with me.

Seriously....a roof people...that is all that is needed...and how is it going to take 3-4 years to build one....there is no point in building a retractable one....it would never be open, they could slap one on in a month! If not, use that freaking tarp that they use to cover the court when it actually starts raining to cover the hole above. *throws things*

Btw, the prediction for today is not encouraging as well.

I doubt we'll get much play today. Maybe enough to allow Coria to finish, but less than an hour so the spectators can get their money back.

I'm about 30 miles from Wimbledon, here it's a bit brighter right now, not raining, but it's windy. But don't hold your breath, there's a lot of black clouds, so it will probably be pouring in a few minutes.

Oh yes - we have lots and lots and lots of lovely rain here now - half an hour before play is due to start! And it's so windy the poor little man wouldn't be able to keep his umbrella up - mine kept blowing "inside out" on the way to work this morning!!

The weathermen in this country have made some shocking forcasts in the past though, so its by no means a given that we'll get any play at all today. Even if they get under way eventually, that wind is beastly. I sure wouldn't want to play in those conditions. :o It's frustrating because here, just about 6/7 miles east we haven't really had that much rain and its bone dry now, although the wind is awful.

Still I've been here long enough to expect this, and I am enjoying these classic matches the BBC are showing, quite a bit. :)

I live in the UK for nearly 3 years now and rain is something you deal with nearly every week here... :devil: And what a surprise it was really hot two weeks ago and started to get worse last week end! There is a curse on tennis's head i'm telling you...

"A couple changes made to the schedule .. on Thursday and Friday, play on the outside courts will begin at 11 a.m. local time and the Men's Doubles has been reduced to 3 sets up until but not including the quarterfinals" (FINALLY!!!!!!)

"They prefaced the announcement by saying they would not start again if an ''imminent chance of rain persisted'' .. it does look rather imminent .. "

"We are still awaiting the start of play .. the tarps are still on .. the wind is still whipping around ... "

They just interviewed the lovely Anastasia Myskina :) She wants the rain to stop so the crowds can see some action but for the time being shes going to play cards with the other Russian players :)

Rain hits Wimbledon

Wimbledon officials have been forced to bring forward the start time for Thursday and Friday following a third day of prolonged rain on Wednesday.

Play will now start at 1100 BST on the outside courts and 1200 BST on Centre Court and Court One.

There has been no play so far on Wednesday, and none likely until at least 1800 BST, and a number of matches have already been cancelled.

Martina Navratilova and Roger Federer were among those due to play.

Officials still hold out some hope that Andy Roddick and Guillermo Coria will complete matches, and that Greg Rusedski will begin against Davide Sanguinetti.

Delays on the first two days of the Championships left organisers 45 matches behind the schedule.

Should the bad weather continue, the referee's office could decide to use the middle Sunday, although that decision is some way off.

In Wednesday's remaining scheduled matches, Roddick leads Taipei qualifier Yeu-Tzuoo 4-2 and Coria's match against Wesley Moodie goes into a third day, with the Argentine third seed 5-3 up in the final set.

Just the usual Paul - "....Ladies and gentleman.....blah,blah.............providing there is no further rain.....blah,blah..'...the covers will be removed at 6.30pm.....blah, blah...and a court inspection will take place...". You know the usual announcement they always make to stop people leaving the grounds! It's so dark and windy though - even if the rain does hold off - don't think they should expect people to play in these conditions.

i understand that rain is part of that wimbledon atmohspere but not really like that! An entire day suspended bcos of goddam rain? i've seen Tim's match a few thousand times and I saw Juanqui's matchtwice and Davenport and the Russians while I could've seen nice LIVE matches!!!!

They said this morning on waking up to Wimbly that fans who go to the tourny and go a whole day without seeing a match get to come back free next year...is this policy fair?

Yeah Fumus, you paid for tickets to watch tennis. If you didn't watch any at all, then you get a refund. Also, there's a policy of how many matches. I think if you saw one complete match, then you can't get a refund, or something like that I'm not quite sur about the rule of how much tennis you need to watch in order to still get a refund.

Well each tournament makes their own policy and I'm pretty sure they're allowed to do whatever they want. I'm not sure about the laws in the UK but in the states I'm pretty sure that as long as they post it before hand, anything they want to do is legal.

If there's less than an hour, you get all your money back. If there's between 1-2 hours, you get half. It's the amount of time, rather than the number of matches, at Wimbledon at least.

Damn the rain. I lost precious sleep waking up every couple hours to see if live tennis is going on. :fiery:

Well they have but they're certainly not happy about it :devil: They just interviewed Alan Mills and Chris Gorringe on TV - Gorringe especially was absolutely seething about having to open up on Sunday - guess they're afraid they'll attract the "wrong kind of fans" there - you know the ones prepared to queue who really love tennis, instead of the debenture holders and corporate hospitality! And have a tendancy to agree with you about the "real" tennis - can't wait to get off this infernal grass. If this tournament was on any other surface but grass they would probably actually be playing now because it's not really heavy - just drizzle - the kind they play in regularly in Hamburg on the clay.

they just announced on ESPN2 that they'll have coverage at 10am tomorrow (this wasn't originally on the schedule), probably for 3 hours til NBC starts at 1. ESPN's coverage is 3 hours of Week 1 highlights so hopefully that will be either live or at least Sunday's current play. Then ESPN2 has another highlights show at 7pm so hopefully that will again be play from Sunday, not just week 1 highlights :)

At least another hour before any play will be possible - it is still raining here now - very steady and doesn't look like stopping. And yes they have moved Roddick to Court 1 when/if they ever start again.

Yeah I did see him, he was really entertaining. Interactive viewing is quite fun, on the whole, wish I could get it all season long.

McEnroe is gone to NBC now, so BBC viewers won't have to see him until the review show tonight, although I have to say he and Peter Fleming sparring was quite entertaining. I expect we'll have Boris Becker for the rest of the singles semis, if we *do* get any play.

I've been told that t has something to do with the fact that there aren't any drainage systems on hardcourts, and there's no place for the rain water to go once you roll the covers up. Of course that just leads us to the next question, why aren't there drainage systems on hard courts? Maybe expense.

That's a good point, bunk. I got that information from the groundskeeper at my local tennis club. I can understand why a local club wouldn't have the best facilities (the rain removal system there is the members who want to play that day armed with squeegees and towels), but a new, professional facility is different. This might be a good e-mail question for the commentators to answer.
