Good, one more moonballer left. Robredo is probably the most undeserving #6 in history, never even made it past QF of a major, and I think he only reached QF in RG, then he takes advantage of tournaments where there is no top players and that's what he wins.

I watched most of the match and Tommy wasn't injured. He didn't get treatment or anything like that, but he played like crap. He made many unforced errors and he didn't show any emotions. That's what surprised me the most. Usually he gets mad when he's missing many easy shots but it was totally different today.

Just because he doesn't hobble around like Melodramatic Murray doesn't mean there wasn't anything wrong. :p

His results off clay include two semis on a hardcourt AMS, the quarters of an indoor AMS, a Round of 16 showing at the AO, and three Round of 16s at the USO. :shrug:
That really shouldn't be good enough to be #5 in the world.

When was the last time he beat a decent player off of clay?

Well, doesn't it depend on whom do you consider a "decent player"? He's beaten Safin, Gasquet, and Ljubicic on fast hard courts within the past month, and he beat Blake at the AO.
:haha: just thinking about it, there aren't many good players around at the moment :o

I'll stop, I do like bashing the likes of Robredo and Davydenko but props to them for reaching where they are. I just think it won't be long before some of the bigger and more talented names find some form and push them out the top 10.

:yeah: Well said :worship: I'm pretty sure there WAS something wrong too - I watched the whole match. Maybe a fever or a virus or something :shrug: - or maybe even some personal thing bothering him that meant he wasn't really "there" at all today. As for people who say he doesn't deserve to be in the Top 10 - of course he deserves to be there because he wouldn't have got there without consistant results and gaining ranking points throughout the year. Congrats anyway Misha.

Fair enough you're right. Blake is a talented player but the my problem with him is that he doesn't believe in himself. He is always so negative in his interviews. I remember in that Indian Wells final, he started applauding Federer's shots. I wish he could develop a killer instinct. He seems to be too nice for his own good.

As far as I'm concerned, Youzhny is far more talented than Robredo anyway. I'm so proud that he's finally made his first GS quarterfinal after so many close 4th round finishes and chokes in Slams. What an extremely satisfying tournament for Misha, made all the more sweet by coming back from 2 sets to love and a break down against Massu and by beating 3 seeds including a top 10 player!

Now, if only I was home, I would have been able to watch all of his matches live and even doubles. :(

Did CBS show any points from this match? Or does anyone have it on tape? I'd kill to see it.

Good luck against Nadal. Take out your third boring Spaniard in a row, please. :D

Match stats:

Robredo = 9 winners, 38 unforced errors
Youzhny = 18 winners, 12 unforced errors

Doesn't sound like Youzhny had to do much here but I'm very glad that he advanced. I don't care much for pretty boy Robredo and his boring game.

2,0 and 1... pretty evident something was wrong with Robredo, otherwise you hardly lose like that, except on very bad days when nothing is going your way or your opponent was simply incredible. But for the win it doesn't matter. Hopefully Nadal will be topfit and playing well to be able to take care of Youzhny and send him home!

I agree, nothing about Robredo says Top 5. This loss just makes his ranking even more embarassing. But the ATP besides the Top 2 right now is so weak that a lot of guys can make the Top 10 that you would never expect.

i just cannot believe this result

in all the years i've known tommy, i have to say that he really is not the kind of guy to just die like that, especially not at this stage of his career. there is definitely something wrong...personally i think it could be more mental than physical...will try and find out more..

Action Jackson

These things can happen and I listened to Youzhny's interview and it was just the perfect day for him and a nightmare for Robredo, these things can happen. If he was that injured or ill then he wouldn't have played.

Robredo served poorly and got punished for his poor performance.

~EMiLiTA~
09-05-2006, 09:23 AM
If he was that injured or ill then he wouldn't have played.

i don't know...he has been known to play through injuries. at AO last year he didn't retire against baghdatis when he should have...he could barely serve. and then a few weeks later he went to dubai and made the semis saying everything was ok and then a few weeks after he said in hindsight he shouldn't have played dubai because he hadn't felt fit there.

i still think this is either a mental breakdown (maybe a realisation of the fact that he is actually #5 and has realistic chances of making Shanghai etc got to him a bit) or some sort of illness..

oz_boz
09-05-2006, 09:34 AM

He got thumped and it happens. I mean it's not like when Massu lost to him at RG, when he could hardly run or serve and this was not the academy Massu either.

It's a good result irrespective.

It is a joke that someone like Boredo is No.5 in the rankings....he's a top 20 player at best. The sooner the likes of Hewitt, Roddick and Safin get back into form and the youngsters - Gasquet, Berdych, Murray, Djokovic etc emerge as top 10 and take over the jokes currently occupying them positions like Robredo, Ljubucic Blake Davydenko and Stepanek, the better.
