Cocky Nalbandian taunts Australia

L James

Cocky Argentine No.1 David Nalbandian has declared that Australia have "no chance" of upsetting the South Americans in this month's Davis Cup semi-final.

Australia, with or without Lleyton Hewitt, who has so far refused to commit to the September 22-24 tie, will travel to Buenos Aires as raging underdog to bring down Argentina on what is sure to be a super-slow clay court.

Still, Nalbandian's confidence was borderline arrogance when asked if Australia could somehow conjure a boilover.

"No," the world No.4 said bluntly after crashing out of the US Open with a five-set third-round loss to Marat Safin.

And his tip for a winning scoreline for Argentina in the best-of-five-match tie? "Three zero is enough and then we will see on Sunday," Nalbandian said.

Hewitt and Nalbandian are bitter rivals and the Australian spearhead sarcastically brushed off the Argentine's bold prediction.

"He would know," Hewitt said.

Nalbandian said he planned to leave New York as soon as possible in order to return home to start preparing for the Cup clash.

He didn't believe his loss to Safin was any sort of setback and wasn't concerned that any of Argentina's nine entrants made the last 16 at Flushing Meadows.

"I prefer to be still playing (at the Open). The more matches you win, the more confidence you will get for the Davis Cup, but that (defeat) doesn't affect my claycourt form," he said.

"We know everybody is going to play good over there (in Buenos Aires), so we don't mind."

Australian captain John Fitzgerald will name his team after the Open once Hewitt announces his availability.

Some more spice added to the contest with David's comments!

Wow - Argentina may actually beat Australia on the slowest, dampest boggiest claycourt swamp they can produce.

What a shocker.

The only reason Nalbandian is trashtalking again is because he now has the time, having lost for the sixth time to Safin while Hewitt makes serene progress in the US Open.

His remarks would impress me more if he'd won more than 4 matches since the French Open.

I think people are reading too much into it all. (If I was a Hewitt fan, I'd think otherwise) If David says something like "They shouldn't bother coming, we will wipe the floor with them. No security can protect you from the might and power of Argentina!" *followed by an evil laugh* then it's a different story.

Who do we have? Potentially Arthurs, Luczak, Guccione... maybe Mr Perfect if he feels up to it and doesn't injure himself or put his family first :sobbing:

Maybe Xristos can play for us. Anyone willing to pay for a one-way airfare?

The way things currently stand, I would say that Australia will beat Argentina in singles AND doubles. Hewitt seems to be playing ok at this open, and Nalbandian, for SOME reason, is being more inconsistant than he usally is. So you could give Australia the edge in singles too...

Nalbandian is just being realistic. Even though his form is not the best at the moment, he usually brings his best to Davis Cup, plus he's got his team mates (Chucho, Calleri and Chela) to rely on.

One could argue that the most sporty thing to do would be to show respect for the opponent, but it's not like Nalbandian is famous for his class.

All he was saying is true... still doesnt seem as if Hewitt will even play, i think Nalbi was being realistic, even though he might have been having a little fun with it as well.

i dont think any nation (maybe spain?) would beat Argentina on clay in Arg.

Hewitt should be a man and face it, we all know he will get a torrid time from the fans and seemingly all the arg players who dont like him, but go and give it a big effort Lleyton... to WD would not look good on you.

I admit he can be arrogant but you take all things very seriously, I mean, if he says: "We'll destroy them" everybody is complaining about that.

Nalbandian will keep digging his own grave with those comments.. hasn't he realised by now hewitt loves nothing more then to play assholes. I can't remember which player it was, but a few years ago someone said they were going to "teach him a lesson" on the court - hewitt went out and kicked his arse.

Aussie's love the underdog tag, i think philippoussis will be in the team. He is already preparing to play. Essentially australia should not win this tie, but they could cause a humiliating upset... i hope that's what happens!

Nalbandian's comments are funny but also ridiculous. Hewitt has had a greater career than the whole Argentinean Davis Cup side combined. He has 2 grand slams, 2 Masters Cup titles, 2 Masters Series titles, 88 weeks at no. 1 and 2 Davis Cup medals. Between them, the only thing of significance that any of them have won is Nalbandian's Masters Cup title. None of them are fit enough to lace Hewitt's boots. Why should Hewitt go to Argentina? He knows that whether he goes or not, Australia will lose. This tie is far bigger for the Argentinean team than Hewitt as unlike them Hewitt is not a loser and has played AND WON far bigger matches and scaled heights that they can only dream off matching. These are biggest matches of many of the Argentinean's players careers because they don't have a hope in hell of doing anything individually. For Hewitt however, this is way down the pecking order. They care about the Davis Cup more than Hewitt because they know they will never win any grand slams so it is there best chance of glory. Hewitt has nothing to prove.

Hewitt hates the Argentina player and I can see why. An ugly jerk like Chela spitted to him, cheatheads like Canas, Puerta on tour who cheat on fair players with drugs.

no... it was a 4 option poll, in the site of an Argentine sports newspaper.

Hewitt and Beckham were among those four.

Hewitt was the one who received more votes... but that doesn't mean he is the most hated sports man, but just the most disliked between those four.

But the Australian media made it look like he is hated by the Argentines... when actually, most Argentines don't know who Hewitt is.
